Geometric painting

Brighten up a dark wall with this colourful abstract painting.

Resene art with Mark Rayner - Project 45

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Drawing compass, old picture frame, piece of 6mm MDF cut to fit the picture frame, paintbrushes (including artists’ brush), PVA glue, Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Bowie, Resene Quick Dry, Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer, Resene testpots in the following colours: Resene Daredevil, Resene Elvis, Resene Howzat, Resene Outrageous and Resene Red Hot, sandpaper.

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to Resene Upstage.

Other ideas: Try a monochrome combination of Resene Crescent, Resene Emerge, Resene Innocence and Resene White Thunder over a basecoat of Resene Blackjack.

Lightly sand the picture frame to provide a ‘key’.
Step 2

Apply one coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to the picture frame and allow two hours to dry.
Step 3

Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the piece of MDF and allow two hours to dry. Fix the piece of MDF into the picture frame with PVA glue and allow to dry.

Apply two coats of Resene Bowie to the MDF and picture frame, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 5

Draw two large intersecting circles using the compass and paint the outer half of one circle with two coats of Resene Outrageous and the outer half of the other circle with two coats of Resene Daredevil, as shown. Allow two hours for each coat to dry.

Paint the central intersecting section with two coats of Resene Elvis, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 7
Step seven
Draw a smaller circle in the centre of each section and paint the middle circle with two coats of Resene Howzat, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Paint the lower circle with two coats of Resene Red Hot and the upper circle with two coats of Resene Bowie. Allow two hours for each coat to dry.
