Cool clown painting

Brighten up your kid’s room with this groovy original artwork.

Resene art with Mark Rayner - Project 12

Difficulty level: Challenging

You will need: 1000mm x 800mm primed artists’ canvas, paintbrushes, Resene Enamacryl tinted to Resene Black, Resene Enamacryl tinted to Resene Fizz, Resene testpots in the following colours: Resene Alabaster, Resene Bright Red, Resene Casablanca, Resene Curious Blue, Resene Dark Buff, Resene Dizzy Lizzy and Resene Kermit.

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to Resene Alabaster and Resene Get Reddy.

Other ideas: For a really glossy finish apply two coats of Resene Multishield+ (now Resene Concrete Clear) gloss to the artwork once it’s dry.

Paint the face and edges of the canvas with two coats of Resene Fizz, allowing at least two hours to dry.

Paint in the outlines of the clown’s head and shoulders using Resene Black, as shown.

Fill in the hair with Resene Dizzy Lizzy, the skin with Resene Casablanca and the eyes with Resene Alabaster, allowing some of the background colour to show through.

Fill in the clown’s face paint with Resene Alabaster, allowing some of the background colour to show through.
Step 5

Paint the neck ruff with Resene Bright Red and Resene Alabaster and the shoulders and eyes with Resene Curious Blue.

Fill in makeup details with Resene Black and Resene Bright Red, as shown.
Step 7
Step seven
Build up shadows around the hair, neck ruff and ears using Resene Black. Add highlights to the nose and eyes with Resene Alabaster.
Step 8
Step eight
Add shadows to the neck and ears with Resene Dark Buff and shadows to the hair with Resene Kermit. Neaten up the edges of the clown’s face paint with Resene Alabaster.
