It’s easy to create a contemporary garden sculpture using reclaimed timber and Resene FX Faux Rust Effect.
Resene art with Mark Rayner - Project 113
Difficulty level: Moderate
To get the look: Mark stained the background fence with Resene Woodsman tinted to Resene Warm Kwila.
Other ideas: To protect the final colour and further deepen the rust effect apply two coats of Resene Aquapel diluted 2:1 with clean water.
Step one
Measure, mark and cut an angle of 30 degrees from the top of each of the pieces of timber.
Step two
Attach the pieces of timber together to form the body of the sculpture using 100mm nails, drilling 3mm pilot holes first.
Step three
Sand the entire sculpture and then wipe off any sanding residue with a clean cloth.
Step four
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the sculpture and allow to dry.
Step five
Apply one coat of Resene Mediterranean Effect to the sculpture, dabbing the paint in random directions to create surface texture. Allow to dry.
Step six
Apply two coats of Resene FX Faux Rust Effect to the sculpture, allowing four hours to dry between coats.
Step seven
Once the second coat is touch dry, apply a coat of Resene FX Faux Rust Effect Activator to the sculpture and allow to dry. Apply a second coat, this time allowing some of the Activator to run down the sides of the sculpture to cause drip patterns. Allow to dry.
Step eight
After 12 hours, lightly spray the sculpture lightly with water to intensify the rust effect.
