Trish Sjirley painting of a horse

Trish Shirley - Merrybook Studio

Trish is somewhat of a jack of all trades when it comes to artwork having created a wide range of work over the years, ranging from oil and watercolor portraits of people and animals to her current fantasy-style mixed-media collages. She has focused on realist, surrealist, bright colours, through to dark and mysterious. It all depends where the mood takes her.

From time to time Trish tried doing what was 'trendy', but that never worked for her, so now she follows her own rules, which sees her immerse herself in her work put her maximum effort into that particular work until it is finished, which has been known to take nine months or more... they really are her babies! Trish tends to do series of works based on one theme, as doing a whole series allows her to really meditate on the work, and immerse herself in it. A recent exhibition of works called Templates for Fairytales, the viewer must create the story that goes with that picture.

Most people think art is all about the skills... such as learning to draw accurately, use the media well, and so on. That's only partially right. You need those skills, of course, but what you really need are great ideas. You'll only get great artwork when the two come together. More of Trish's work is done in her head than it is on paper or board. Recently she completely went for broke, and made Fluffy and Slasher, the sabretooth tiger and steampunk stallion. They are surprisingly sizeable, and took a year or so to complete. They come complete with a scary soundtrack and steampunk gadgets. You really haven't lived 'til you've watched a small child dancing around trying to make the tiger roar again!

Currently, Trish is creating collages on board using Resene primer to undercoat all my boards front and back, with two coats on the front facing side. She also uses loads of testpots when she's painting. She also uses Resene Multishield+ clear glaze to unify and protect the finished work. Trish doesn'tknow anyone else who paints like she does, and as she says "I'm probably breaking a lot of 'rules', but it works for me".
