John van Dolleweerd

John designs and paints original patterns on heavy art paper or card that are symmetrical around a central point.  All my work is abstract but is also very structured in as much that all the motifs are repetitive and spaced evenly in relation to each other and to the centre point.  There are large contrasts between each completed work - not only size and colour but each piece looks very different. 

John’s inspiration comes from simple geometric shapes that he alters and reshapes, then combine and/or group and arrange into different designs with changing colour combinations and geometries.  For all the works John uses a stylus to carefully apply the paint onto paper or card. The designs - especially the smaller paintings - often have curved or straight lines very close together that he just can't paint with a brush - hence the stylus.

Resene testpots are ideal for John’s work because he uses different colours all the time and he only needs small quantities. The colours don't fade, they flow nicely and dry fast on paper. John prefers to work with primary and secondary colours with their associated tints, tones and shades.
