Cristina Silaghi

Cristina Silaghi's paintings could be characterised as abstract; however, they often exhibit qualities associated with representational art, such as animation or a sense of space. Christina applies paint directly to paper or canvas; alternatively, she allows paint to dry on a PVC sheet, and employs collage and decoupage to reshape the paint before adding it to her works. The variations of this simple process are potentially endless.

Christina draws her inspiration from places - seen and remembered. She associates vistas with certain colours, which later supply her paintings their dominant note. Christina's paintings and drawings do not attempt to render actual landscapes, but propose to create alternative places in experience.

Resene multi-finish testpots allow Christina to maintain a flexibility in her process which she very much enjoys. The colour combinations she articulates are the result of her experimentation with small quantities of paint. Testpots make it easy for Christina to determine her chromatic commitments, and to create chromatic diversity when needed; they place stability as well as freshness at her fingertips.

Christina started working with Resene paints in 2002; ever since, they have been her favourite art-making companions. Walking into Resene shops is, to this day, a joyful, inspirational experience. Colour charts have a great way of making visible gradation, tinting, toning, or brilliance - as well as the inventiveness that goes into the naming of every hue. At Resene, 'Wild Thing,' 'Pompadour,' or 'Middle Earth' are colours and stories at the same time. This is a gift to begin with. Christina count many Resene colours among her favourites, but tends to always have in her studio testpots of Resene Red Berry, Resene Space Cadet, Resene Picton Blue and Resene Blackcurrant.
