Chantze Rohe artist

Chantze Rohe

Chantze grew up in a small town known as Wairoa. Educated by family and friends in Maori arts - kapa haka (performance), kirituhi (skin art) and te reo Maori (spoken language) - his family noticed his developing fascination for the arts so he was packed up and sent to live in Hastings with his older sister and her husband to study at Toimairangi, Te Wananga o Aotearoa, who work with the Hastings branch of Resene.

In 2004 Chantze started at Toimairangi - School of Maori Visual Arts, exploring his un-nurtured skills of moko and kowhaiwhai, using Resene paints. He tried other brands of paint but found Resene provided the best quality for coverage, good flow and the paint doesn't fade - Chantze has works that are still as vivid now as they were when they were first painted five years ago. Resene's Lumbersider paint range was the first acrylic paint Chantze ever purchased and he plans to stick with this until he gives up wielding a paintbrush.

In the five years Chantze was at Toimairangi he was given great opportunities to travel the world to places like London and Hawaii and to send artwork to Australia for Waitangi Day celebrations. He has been part of exhibitions and gatherings in Hawke's Bay and around New Zealand and during his final year of study to complete his Bachelor of Maori Visual Art in 2008 he had his first solo exhibition at the Wairoa District Council to share what he had learnt over the years while at Toimairangi.
