New Zealand Fighter Pilots Museum

Honouring New Zealand Fighter Pilots and their crew, the New Zealand Fighter Pilots Museum established in 1993 provides a valuable history for current and future generations.

Project Description

Wanaka Airport is host to the New Zealand Fighter Pilots Museum and the Alpine Fighter Collection, both of which were established by aviation enthusiast Sir Tim Wallis. Combined with this amazing collection of airworthy World War II fighters, is a museum that not only displays the aircraft but provides an insight into an era that has now passed, an era in which New Zealand, with a population of 1.5 million in 1945, had per capita the highest number of fighter pilots and aces in World War II.

The museum is a fighter plane fanatic's dream and the hub of the famous Warbirds Over Wanaka, the major warbird airshow of the Southern Hemisphere held every even year over Easter.

To complement the display wall interspersed with showcases housing rare artefacts, Environmental Choice approved Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen in hues of Resene Gotham (sea blue) and Resene Travis (ochre cream) adorn the display areas including the showcases. Waterborne paint was selected as a deliberate alternative to solventborne paint as solventborne products tend to be aggressive and have been known to damage original works on paper.
