How to make wooden bunting for your garden

You will need

Materials

  • 1200mm x 600mm x 7mm sheet of ply
  • 15m x 6mm natural rope
  • Resene Quick Dry Waterborne Primer Undercoat

Tools

  • Tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Mitre saw and circular saw or jig saw or hand saw
  • Drill and 7mm drill bit
  • Speed clamps to hold the ply while cutting and drilling

Paint colours

Cost: $25 excluding Resene products.

Instructions

Step one — Measure & mark

The base will be 150mm wide with the point 200mm long. Prime both sides of the plywood sheet. When the primer is dry, measure and mark the base of the triangles along one of the 1200mm edges. Make a mark at: 150, 300, 450, 600, 750, 900 and 1050.

Next measure and mark a line 200mm in for where the point of the triangle will end. (I used a piece of timber as a straight edge). Measure and mark the points at: 75, 225, 375, 525, 675, 825, 975 and 1125. Then rule up the triangles by connecting all the marks.

Step two — Cut

Use a circular saw, jig saw or hand saw to cut the ply into 200mm x 1200mm lengths, use speed clamps to hold everything in place. Then, following the guidelines cut the triangles out of these.

Step three — Drill holes

Arrange about 7 or 8 triangles at a time in a neat stack, clamp them down with a speed clamp then drill a 7mm hole through each corner of the top of the triangle bunting, Drill the hole about 15mm in from each edge.

Step four — Paint

Sand off any rough edges then paint.

Step five — Assembly

Thread all the bunting onto the rope, I left a gap of about 100mm between each triangle. To make threading easier, I dabbed a tiny bit of super glue on the end of the rope to help prevent fraying.
