How to make a barrel bar

As seen in kiwigardener

You will need

Materials:

Tools:

  • Clean cloth
  • Drill
  • Gloves
  • Hole saw (to match plug size)
  • Paintbrush
  • Reciprocating saw or jigsaw
  • Sandpaper
  • Scrubbing brush

Top tip:  Use a round barbecue cover that has similar dimensions to your barrel to protect it from the elements when it’s not being used.

Instructions

How to build a barrel bar:

How to build a barrel bar - Step 1 Step one
Work out how many slats to cut out of your wine barrel so that you are left with three openings of a similar size (ours was five slats wide). U sing a jigsaw or reciprocating saw, carefully cut out the required slats between the two metal rings.

How to build a barrel bar - Step 2 Step two
If you find mould inside when you cut into the wine barrel, wash thoroughly with Resene Moss and Mould Killer, diluting one part Resene Moss and Mould Killer to five parts water.

How to build a barrel bar - Step 3 Step three
Sand down each cut edge as well as any rough spots. Wipe off any sanding dust.

How to build a barrel bar - Step 4 Step four
Turn the barrel upside down and screw the four wheels into position. Ensure that they won’t hit the edge as they swivel.

How to build a barrel bar - Step 5 Step five
Using a hole saw that matches the diameter of your plug, cut out a drain hole in the middle of the base.

How to build a barrel bar - Step 6 Step six
Apply Resene Furniture and Decking Oil to the barrel, avoiding the metal rings.

How to build a barrel bar - Step 7 Step seven
Use a small hook to hang the plug from the inside of the barrel. A standard plug without a chain will work too, but tugging on the chain to drain the melted ice will mean you don’t have to dunk your hand in cold water.

How to build a barrel bar - Step 8 Step eight
Screw the bottle opener into position.
