How to build a bird feeding table

Ways with wood with Mark Rayner - Project 85

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need:

  • 1.5m fence paling
  • 50mm x 25mm timber (approx 1.8m)
  • 100mm x 75mm x 1200mm treated timber
  • 65mm exterior screws
  • paint stirrer
  • paintbrush

To get the look: Mark painted the background shed wall with Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Soft Apple.

Other ideas: For a rich red effect stain the feeding table with Resene Woodsman tinted to Resene Japanese Maple.

How to make a bird table

Step 1

Measure and mark three 450mm lengths of fence paling.
Step 2

Cut the lengths to size
Step 3

Smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.
Step 4

From the 50mm x 25mm timber, measure, mark and cut two lengths at 470mm and two lengths at 410mm. Smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.

From the 50mm x 25mm timber, measure, mark and cut two lengths at 470mm and two lengths at 410mm. Smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.
Step 6
Step six
Position the remaining piece of timber in the centre of the table top, as shown, and fix from underneath with screws driven in at an angle.

Step seven
Carefully stir the Resene Woodsman tinted to Resene Grey Green.
Step 8
Step eight
Apply two coats of Resene Woodsman tinted to Resene Grey Green to the feeding table, allowing the first coat to dry before applying the second.
