Garden seat

It’s easy to build this simple garden seat from timber and finish it off with a rich red colour from the Resene Woodsman range.

Ways with wood with Mark Rayner - Project 82

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: 50mm x 50mm treated timber (approx 300mm), 75mm exterior wood screws, brush , drill with 3mm drill bit, exterior PVA glue, large clamps (x2), paintbrush, pencil Resene Woodsman tinted to Resene Japanese Maple, ruler, sandpaper, saw, screwdriver, tape measure, tongue and groove landscaping timber (approx 3.5m).

To get the look: Mark painted the background stucco wall with Resene AquaShield tinted to Resene Quarter Solitaire.

Other ideas: For a darker green effect use Resene Woodsman tinted to Resene Rangitoto.

Step 1
Step one
Measure, mark and cut two 750mm lengths of tongue and groove landscaping timber and smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.

Measure, mark and cut four 350mm lengths of tongue and groove landscaping timber and smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.
Step 3

Measure, mark and cut one 600mm length of tongue and groove landscaping timber and two 150mm lengths of 50mm x 50mm timber and smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.
Step 4
Step four
Fix the 350mm lengths of timber together with PVA glue and screw the 150mm pieces of timber across the join, as shown, drilling pilot holes first. Ensure these pieces are in the same position on each section. Allow glue to dry.

Step five
Clamp the 600mm piece of timber into position onto one of the 350mm sections, as shown, and fix in place with PVA glue and screws, drilling pilot holes first.
Step 6

Repeat step five with the other 350mm section and once the glue has dried remove the clamps.
Step 7
Step seven
Attach the two 750mm pieces of timber into position to form the top of the seat, fixing with PVA glue and screws, drilling pilot holes first. Allow glue to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Apply two coats of Resene Woodsman tinted to Resene Japanese Maple to the seat, ensuring the first coat is dry before applying the second.
