Shelf unit

Create this stylish shelf unit from reclaimed wood and finish it off with Resene Colorwood Whitewash.

Ways with wood with Mark Rayner – 62

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: 40mm panel pins, reclaimed bare wood (ours measured 20mm x 90mm), a clean cloth, drill with drill bits, hammer, paintbrush, pencil, PVA glue, sandpaper, saw, screwdriver, set square, shelf hangers with screws (x2) and a tape measure. Resene Colorwood Whitewash.

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom tinted to Resene First Light.

Other ideas: For a more natural finish, and to enhance the grain, apply three coats of Resene Aquaclear satin over the bare wood.

Step 1 how to build a shelf unit

Step one
Measure and mark the wood into two 640mm lengths and four 180mm lengths.

Step 2 how to build a shelf unit

Use the back of the saw to make cutting lines, as shown.

Step 3 how to build a shelf unit

Step three
Using the pencil lines as a guide, cut the pieces of wood to size.

Step four
Lightly sand the pieces of wood, taking care to smooth any rough edges.

Step five
Wipe off any sanding dust with a clean cloth.

Step 6 how to build a shelf unit

Step six
Assemble the unit, as shown, fixing with PVA glue and panel pins. Use a set square to ensure corners are at right angles, and drill narrow pilot holes first to prevent the wood from splitting. Allow glue to dry.

Step 7 how to build a shelf unit

Step seven
Apply one coat of Resene Colorwood Whitewash to the unit and allow to dry.

Step 8 how to build a shelf unit

Step eight
Fix two shelf hangers to the back of the unit, as shown. Again, drill pilot holes first so as not to split the wood.
