Candleholder

Create this stylish candleholder from an old table leg and a block of timber and finish it off with easy-to-use Resene Colorwood Enhance and Resene Aquaclear.

Difficulty level: Easy

You will need: a clean cloth, paintbrush, paint stirrer, piece of dressed timber measuring approx 90mm x 90mm x 40mm (ours came from a renovator’s centre), PVA glue, sandpaper, saw and a wooden table leg. Resene Aquaclear gloss and Resene Colorwood Enhance – Resene Black.

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Vitra.

Other ideas: For a lighter brown finish use Resene Colorwood Enhance in Resene Walnut.

Step 1 how to make a candleholder
Step one
Cut the timber to size and trim the table leg to a 300mm length.
Step 2 how to make a candleholder

Smooth any rough edges with sandpaper and wipe off any sanding dust with a clean cloth.

Lightly sand the table leg and wipe off any sanding dust with a clean cloth.
Step 4 how to make a candleholder
Step four
Fix the table leg to the centre of the block of timber, as shown, using PVA glue. Allow glue to dry.
Step 5 how to make a candleholder
Step five
Shake the Resene Colorwood Enhance.
Step 6 how to make a candleholder
Step six
Carefully pour the Resene Colorwood Enhance into the Resene Aquaclear and stir thoroughly.
Step 7 how to make a candleholder
Step seven
Apply one coat of the coloured Resene Aquaclear to the candleholder and allow two hours to dry.
Step 8 how to make a candleholder
Step eight
Step eight Apply a second coat of the coloured Resene Aquaclear to the candleholder and allow two hours to dry.

Always ensure lit candles are under adult supervision. Always extinguish all candles before going to sleep. Replace candles when they are at least 20mm from the top edge of the candleholder.
