Garden gate

Create a stylish security gate using rough sawn fence palings and Resene Waterborne Woodsman wood stain.

Ways with wood with Mark Rayner - Project 35

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Eight 1.8m rough sawn fence palings, 50mm galvanised nails, drill with 10mm drill bit, gate hinges and latch, hammer, jigsaw, old 2 litre Resene paint tin, paintbrush, pencil, saw, screwdriver, set square and tape measure. Resene Waterborne Woodsman Penetrating Oil Stain tinted to Resene English Walnut.

To get the look: Mark also stained the adjacent fence with Resene Waterborne Woodsman Penetrating Oil Stain tinted to Resene English Walnut.

Other ideas: If you’re after a rich reddish brown use Resene Waterborne Woodsman tinted to Resene Cherrywood.

Step 1

Lay five fence palings side by side on a flat surface - use a set square to make sure ends are in line.
Step 2

Measure and cut three horizontal cross pieces, as shown, and fix to the fence palings with 50mm nails.

Measure and cut two angled cross pieces, as shown, and fix with 50mm nails.
Step 4

Position the old paint tin where you want the ‘hand hole’ and trace around the base with a pencil.

Drill a 10mm pilot hole and then cut out the circle with a jigsaw.
Step 6

Attach the hinges and latch to the gate with screws provided.
Step 7

Hold the gate in position and attach hinges to the gate post with the screws provided.
Step 8
Step eight
Apply two coats of Resene English Walnut to the gate, allowing 24 hours for each coat to dry.
