Interior: It’s easy to combine recycled wood with Resene Aquaclear to create this stylish herb grower.

How to make a rustic herb grower

Ways with wood with Mark Rayner – Project 103

Difficulty level:  Moderate

You will need

  • Brass panel pins
  • Clean cloth
  • Hammer
  • Paint stirrer
  • Paintbrush
  • Pencil
  • Plastic growing trough measuring 150mm (h) x 165 (d) x 595mm (w)
  • Potting mix
  • PVA glue
  • Reclaimed wood (we used old native tongue and groove measuring approximately 140mm x 20mm)
  • Resene Aquaclear gloss
  • Sanding block
  • Sandpaper
  • Saw
  • Selection of potted herbs
  • Tape measure
  • Trowel

To get the look:  Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene French Pass.

Other ideas:  For a pale effect, stain the reclaimed wood with Resene Colorwood Whitewash.

How to make a rustic herb grower

Rustic herb grower - Step 1 Step one
Measure and mark two 155mm lengths, and two 640mm lengths of reclaimed wood, as shown.


Rustic herb grower - Step 2 Step two
Using the pencil marks as a guide, cut the reclaimed wood to size with a saw.


Rustic herb grower - Step 3 Step three
Sand the pieces of reclaimed wood and then wipe off any sanding residue with a clean cloth.


Rustic herb grower - Step 4 Step four
Assemble the pieces of reclaimed wood to form a rectangular frame, as shown. Fix at each corner with PVA glue and panel pins. Allow glue to dry.

Carefully stir the Resene Aquaclear.


Rustic herb grower - Step 6 Step six
Apply one coat of Resene Aquaclear to the outside of the wooden frame, as shown, and allow to dry.


Rustic herb grower - Step 7 Step seven
Apply a second coat of Resene Aquaclear to the outside of the wooden frame, as shown, and allow to dry.


Rustic herb grower - Step 8 Step eight
Plant up the growing trough with potting mix and the selection of potted herbs and then stand the growing trough inside the wooden frame.
