Cool grey workshop

Turn a plain kitset shed into a chic grey workshop with the help of Resene Woodsman penetrating oil stain.

Ways with wood with Mark Rayner - Project 01

Difficulty level: Challenging

You will need: a large timber kitset shed (ours measured 2.4m x 4m with additional decking), concrete or H4 treated timber piles (check with shed manufacturer’s recommendations), small spade for digging piles, tools for constructing shed (check with manufacturer’s instructions), rapidset concrete (approx 1 bag for every 4 piles) and paintbrushes. Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Heather for the doors, Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat, Resene Waterborne Woodsman Penetrating Oil Stain tinted to Resene Smokey Ash for the walls, Resene Woodsman penetrating oil stain tinted to Resene Oiled Cedar for the decking.

To get the look: Paint the roof in Resene Karaka or opt for a COLORSTEEL® roof in Karaka green – this choice was available from the shed manufacturer.

Other ideas: Try hotter colours from the Resene Waterborne Woodsman Penetrating Oil Stain range - combine Resene Bamboo (walls) with Resene Embers (decking) and finish off doors with a contrasting Resene Lumbersider tinted to Resene Nero.

Step 1
Step one
Sink piles according to the shed manufacturer’s recommendations (or construct shed on a poured concrete base). We used 32 for this model, spaced 800mm and 600mm apart, as shown, sunk to a depth of 400mm into rapidset concrete. Construct subfloor base on top of the level piles, as shown.
Step 2
Step two
Erect and fix wall panels according to the manufacturer’s instructions, sealing along all joints with silicon. Fix roof gables, as shown.
Step 3
Step three
Sink two rows of five evenly spaced piles along the front of the shed and fix base for decking – again, follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for this.
Step 4
Step four
Fix decking to base using galvanised decking nails as supplied by the manufacturer. Fix roofing sheets following the manufacturer’s instructions, lay flooring and hang doors.
Step 5
Step five
Mix one part Resene Moss & Mould Killer to five parts clean water and apply generously to the decking with a garden sprayer. Leave for 48 hours and rinse off with clean water.
Step 6
Step six
Apply one coat of Resene Waterborne Woodsman tinted to Resene Smokey Ash to the exterior walls.
Step 7
Step seven
Apply one coat of Resene Woodsman tinted to Resene Cedar to the decking. Wait 24 hours and apply second coats to the walls and decking. Allow to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry. Once dry, apply two coats of Resene Heather to the doors, allowing two hours to dry between coats. (If doors have been previously painted, check with your local Resene ColorShop for advice).
