Tennis racket

Give an old wooden tennis racket a new lease of life with a little bit of help from Resene.

Paint a tennis racket

Resene Toys and Games with Mark Rayner - Project 28

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: Artists’ brushes (1 small and 1 large), clean cloth, old wooden tennis racket, Resene Aquaclear gloss, Resene Quick Dry, Resene testpots of Resene Lucifer and Resene Teal Blue, sandpaper.

To get the look: Mark painted the background wall with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Malibu.

Other ideas: For a cool purple effect use a basecoat of Resene Daisy Bush and two top coats of Resene Funtasia.

Step 1
Step one
Remove any old tape and stickers from the tennis racket frame.
Step 2
Step two
Sand the tennis racket frame to remove any gum residue from the tape and stickers and also to ‘key’ the surface.
Step 3
Step three
Wipe off any sanding residue with a damp cloth and allow the tennis racket frame to dry.
Step 4
Step four
Using the small artists’ brush, paint the inner wooden frame between the strings, as shown, with one coat of Resene Quick Dry.
Step 5
Step five
Continue applying one coat of Resene Quick Dry to the remainder of the tennis racket frame using the larger artists’ brush. Allow to dry.
Step 6
Step six
Using the same technique as in steps four and five, apply one coat of Resene Teal Blue to the tennis racket frame and allow to dry.
Step 7
Step seven
In the same way, apply two coats of Resene Lucifer to the tennis racket frame, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Apply three coats of Resene Aquaclear to the tennis racket frame, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
