Blackboard

Kids will love playing with this easy-tomake blackboard and the whole project can be completed in a day.

Resene Toys and Games with Mark Rayner - Project 03

Difficulty level: Moderate

You will need: 2 x hinges, 12mm MDF cut to the following dimensions: 450mm x 650mm (x2), 20mm x 40mm dressed moulding cut to the following lengths:, 800mm (x4), 560mm (x2), 650mm (x2), 25mm screws, Drill bits, Paintbrush, Paint tray and roller, Pencil, PVA glue, Resene Blackboard Paint (green), Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Supernova, Resene Quick Dry, Sandpaper, Saw, Screwdriver, Tape measure, Two cup hooks and small length of chain

To get the look: Mark painted the background walls with Resene SpaceCote Flat tinted to Resene Half Alabaster.

Other ideas: Create a fabulous ‘Blueboard’ using Resene Blackboard Paint (blue) and Resene Lustacryl tinted to Resene Elvis.

Step 1

Measure and mark the timber and MDF to the sizes listed above.
Step 2

Cut the timber and MDF using the pencil marks as a guide.
Step 3

Smooth any rough edges with sandpaper.
Step 4
Step four
Attach the two 650mm lengths of moulding to the two pieces of MDF to form the chalk ledge, fixing with screws and PVA - drill pilot holes first.
Step 5

Turn the two pieces over and fix the 800mm lengths to form legs and the two 560mm pieces along the tops, as shown - again drill pilot holes first.
Step 6

Fix the two hinges into position along the top edge, as shown. Drill pilot holes to prevent wood from splitting.
Step 7
Step seven
Apply two coats of Resene Supernova to the backs, legs and side edges of the blackboard, allowing two hours for each coat to dry.
Step 8
Step eight
Apply two coats of Resene Blackboard Paint (green) to the front and back of the blackboard, allowing two hours for each coat to dry. Fix cup hooks and chain in position on one side to prevent legs from slipping.
