Q&A

Q. My pavers keep on getting weeds and mould. Can you suggest a method to get rid of them permanently?

A. Resene Deep Clean sounds like it will be the best/easiest product for part of the job. Resene Deep Clean uses long mould resistant technology and only needs to be applied every six months to keep moss and mould growth away.

For the weeds, using a weed killer will be best or pluck them out prior to treating moss and mould.

Unfortunately applying a sealant over the pavers to stop plant growth will not work long term.

Q. We need to repaint our concrete steps but need advice. Last time we painted them, the paint wore off very quickly. Can you recommend how to prepare the steps, and the best products to use so that the paint won’t wear off quickly? These are our front steps, so we’d really like them to look smart.

A. Painting concrete steps is a bit of a catch 22. As soon as concrete is painted it can lose its slip resistance and become slippery when wet. You can use paint with grit in it but it catches dust and dirt more so. Being such a high use area, the paint will wear away over time.

For your steps, if both slip resistance and aesthetics are important, I suggest using a product called Resene Walk-on. Resene Walk-on has good adhesion to bare concrete and very small grit for slip resistance.

To prepare, the existing coating will need to be removed as much as possible. All paint edges need to be feathered back to a sound finish. The concrete should have a rough feel.

Apply two coats according to the data sheet.

I advise to do a test step first to ensure paint compatibility if there is an existing coating.

Q. I have terracotta brick pavers at the house entrance (outside). What paint would you recommend and what preparation?

A. Ensure the glazed tiles are thoroughly cleaned. Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Sureseal and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before overcoating.

Apply two coats of Resene Walk-on. Resene Walk-on has small grit inside to assist with slip resistance. This also means that darker colours will show dirt more due to the grit holding the dirt dust slightly more than a smooth paint.

The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks until full cure occurs. In the early stages the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion as these features develop as the film undergoes curing.

Note that painting will not reproduce the original features of the tiles.

Q. I have been hired to paint from pavement art. I'm after advice of what to first put down on the concrete to prime/seal before painting a white basecoat.

A. You have the right thinking. Apply Resene Sureseal as the first coat followed by 2-3 coats of Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen.

Applying a grit will possibly cause faster wear and tear. Applying a clear coat will not assist in the wear and tear unless an entire surface is coated from side to side with no change of water coming in underneath.

Murals on the ground wear quicky under foot traffic but can be touched up as needed.

Q. I am looking for a paving paint that can be installed over a new fibre cement decking sheet. This would be applied to a new deck and stairs. It will need to comply with D1/AS1 slip resistance.

A. We recommend Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path. This is a durable paint with grit for the slip resistance. However, it is harder to keep clean so will need more regular cleaning. Apply one coat of Resene Sureseal oil pigmented sealer as a first coat to ensure adhesion.

September 2023

Q. We would like to paint our tarmac at the school. We have a few existing games painted that we would like to touch up and then we would also like to paint some new games.

A. Painting tarmac for the long term can be tricky as the paint will fade/wear off with use. Most schools use Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen. On the new tarmac, get it as clean as possible and do not apply on a hot day. I would suggest doing a test patch first and check adhesion after 48 hours (Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen is in the Resene testpots) to make sure the paint will stick well.

Q. At my front door I have a platform and I wish to make the outside edge luminous. What do I need?

A. Resene FX Nightlight could be a good option. Please note the after a few hours in the dark the luminous effect does wear off until recharged by the sun again. The primer needed will be dependent on what the platform is made from and if it is coated or not.

August 2023

Q. Can leftover Resene Moss & Mould Killer be used to kill lichen on an asphalt driveway?

A. Yes it can, provided the pack instructions for ratios are followed.

August 2023

Q. I am resurfacing my stairs with Resene Polythane and am having trouble with the consistency of the finish. The old coating was applied when the house was built around 15 years ago. The stair timber is kwila. I have sanded and removed the existing coating. I have now applied the first coat of Resene Polythane, but the finish looks inconsistent.

A. Clear coatings will typically accentuate what's happening with the substrate itself (as opposed to disguise) so this is likely reflecting the level of surface preparation/sanding etc. The previous coating would have needed to be completely removed across the entire surface so that the new coating can penetrate into the surface evenly. Removing a coating fully is a challenging exercise.

August 2023

Q. Do you have car park line marking paint?

A. Yes, we sell road marking paint in yellow or white on behalf of our sister company Altex Coatings. This can be ordered via your local Resene ColorShop.

August 2023

Q. I am looking the suitable paint solution for mild steel checker plate step tread. The paint is going to be used on the nosing part of the tread. The stair is used indoors at a factory. The paint should be abrasion resistant and have good adhesion to the base layer (which is an acrylic and is sound).

A. Since the existing paint is acrylic and performing well, you can paint the yellow line in an acrylic without the need for primer as long as the current coating is clean. I’d recommend Resene Walk-on or Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen. Grit can be added to both of these options for extra slip resistance.

August 2023

Q. We have what we call our rainbow path that is the walkway into our school. Some of the colours have either faded or coming off. Do you have a good product that I can use to repaint some of the path? I don’t know what the old paint was.

A. It may be best to do a test area first. Clean a small area first then apply some methylated spirits to a clean rag and rub the surface of the existing paint. We would be hoping it was water-based, so the colour paint should ‘ smudge’ and some colour should transfer onto the rag. If this happens, you can proceed with the below paint system. If it doesn’t and the methylated spirits cleans the existing paint but does not soften it, then please let us know.

If it is waterbased paint, we recommend you clean the surface, and treat any moss and mould present with Resene Moss & Mould Killer. Allow to thoroughly dry and be mindful of temperatures. Concrete runs colder than the air temp and this will affect the paint curing.

Spot prime any bare areas of concrete with one coat of solventborne Resene Sureseal (if you find it easier you can apply a coat of this over the bare areas and the existing paint). Follow with two topcoats of Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen (also the same paint used in our testpots).

As there are areas of exposed concrete surrounding the rainbow path, moisture will always be able to sweep in underneath the paint coating, which will lead to maintenance being needed over time.

Q. What clear topcoat will be best for us to use to put the finishing touches on the pride stairs we have created for our office. These were done a few months back, but we didn't get a chance to do a topcoat at the time. We used Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss finish, and the material they are painted on is 6 x 6mm hardboard sheets.

A. After a good clean down with Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner (following pack instructions), if you’re happy with it being slightly glossier than it currently is two coats of Resene Concrete Clear – Gloss. The product goes on milky and will dry clear.

July 2023

Q. I am looking to stain our 20+ year old orange/red pavers to a grey colour.

A. We have a product called Resene Concrete Stain. This can be used on the pavers if there is no clear coating or curing membrane on the pavers currently.

All stains are maintenance products and semi-transparent and may require three coats to get coverage and elements of the original colour may still show through and will come through as the stain fades.

July 2023

Q. Our concrete driveway needs to be repainted as the paint is fading and wearing off. Luckily it is not flaking off. There is also some bare, unpainted concrete.

We want to paint it all and we are considering Resene Blacktop. I read even though it's for asphalt it can be used on concrete, can it? If I want to use it do I have to grind all the paint off?

The grinding is quite expensive and labour intensive which I want to avoid, if the Resene Blacktop won't work do you have another product that will work?

A. Resene Blacktop can be used on bare concrete, so any existing coating will need to be thoroughly removed, and then we require the concrete to be sealed using one coat of Resene Sureseal solventborne, followed by Resene Blacktop.

Please note that Resene Blacktop does fade over time due to the bitumen base weathering. Resene Blacktop is the easiest system to use for your project on the trafficable surfaces, any alternative we can offer will require a diamond grind and two pack industrial product, which may be the type of system originally used.

For the areas around the house, if black your ideal colour choice, it will heat up underfoot, especially in summer. There are other options for areas other than your driveways, such as Resene Walk-on or Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path. A sealer coat of Resene Sureseal is still required before topcoating.

For concrete, I would recommend painting to repaint until warmer and drier weather, as the air temp may be above 10 degrees when painting, but the surface temp of the concrete will be much lower than this, and can cause problems with curing.

July 2023

Q. We have 50 m2 of old terracotta coloured concrete now pitted and very unattractive plus 56 m2 of terracotta coloured concrete pavers adjoining the concrete. We want to colour the whole lot a greyish shade.

A. Painting these will be difficult. They aren’t made with the intention of being painted, and while we can put a coating on them, we wouldn’t be able to ensure the long-time durability of the paint. This is because the dampness from the grass, and moisture that will get between the pavers will seep in and peel the edges of the paint relatively fast.

We have Resene Concrete Stain that is fully penetrating and can help darken the tiles. Stains are a high-maintenance product but as it fully penetrates you will still have the slip resistance of the original pavers and the stain will fade rather than lift and peel.

If the pavers are already coated, this would need to be removed before painting or staining, by diamond grinding the surface. Any paint system applied will not replicate the hardness properties of the original concrete. Maintenance will be required over time, due to moisture in the cut edges and nearby garden seeping into the concrete and under the outdoor furniture. Other areas susceptible to lifting would be if, when it rains, the water ponds anywhere.

May 2023

Q. I am pricing a job for a school footpath. What kind of paint should I use? It will be a painted art trail on concrete.

A. The most common system that we use for this area is one coat of Resene Solventborne Sureseal, followed by two topcoats of Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen (which is also the same paint that is in our testpots). Please keep in mind that paint systems on a concrete walking area will require maintenance over time as moisture and ponding can cause paint to lift.

May 2023

Q. I am trying to seal the bare concrete paving slabs around our pool, so that you don't get dust on your feet every time you walk on them, making a mess in the house!

A. You can use Resene Waterborne Aquapel. Fully penetrating water repellents do require maintenance as they erode over time, so it could be good to have some on hand for recoating.

May 2023

Q. How do I remove old non-slip paint from old concrete (now chipped and peeling in places) so I can repaint and stencil. I want a smooth finish that is easy to walk on and clean with mop?

A. A water blast is a good place to start if the concrete itself is not degraded. Then we recommend a coating remover such as Resene Sea to Sky - this is a water-based gel paint stripper that you can apply thickly by brush. Wait a few hours and hose or scrape off. It’s best to coat out of direct sunlight.

May 2023

Q. Am I able to use Resene Concrete Stain on a smooth terracotta outdoor path that has no clear coat?

A. Yes, Resene Concrete Stain is a good option for this.

March 2023

Q. I have treated pine steps leading up to a grappa deck with engineered timber posts (also treated pine.) I am not going to stain the grappa but presume that I need to stain the steps. For the steps I prefer a product that does not leave a film on the top so wondered about the Resene solventborne penetrating oil stain.

A. Resene Woodsman Wood Oil Stain solventborne would be exactly what I would recommend. This is a fully penetrating stain and is not surface-forming. We recommend that the steps are weathered for 4 -6 months, and washed with Resene Timber and Deck Wash. This helps to open the grain and allow the stain to sink in.

March 2023

Q. Do you have a product for footpaths that is durable and of non-slip nature?

A. Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path is a non-slip pigmented paint. It is designed to be applied directly to concrete or bitumen. If doing large areas, you may find texture/colour differences on certain angles from application only.

Keeping in mind, once a texture is applied, it is harder to keep clean than a smooth surface. Dark colours will highlight dirt and debris.

January 2023

Q. I have a 1960s house which has a concrete block bottom storey and timber/weatherboard top storey. The footprint of the top storey is slightly smaller which leaves a concrete deck/walkway around part of the house. That concrete deck/walkway therefore is part of the roof of the bottom storey.

At the moment, the concrete deck/walkway is unsealed (bare concrete). It has a few spots with silicon where previous owners appear to have filled in cracks etc. I'd like to seal the concrete deck/walkway so that no moisture gets in from rain. Whatever I seal it with needs to be able to be walked on and not be slippery.

The finish would need to be weathertight. The silicone looks to be in good enough condition. However, I don't know what makes silicone paintable or not.

The house is about 1.5km from the sea.

What should I use?

A. I think a pigmented paint system would be best in this case.

Apply one coat of Resene Sureseal pigmented sealer, followed by two coats of either Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path or Resene Walk-on in your chosen colour.

There is an option to add grit to the Resene Walk-on, this can be a great option if you want only some areas to be non-skid, like the steps.

For the silicone areas, we recommend doing a small test patch with the Resene Sureseal sealer, applying one coat leaving for 24 hours and seeing if it has adhered well. At a guess, I don’t think this is likely to be paintable, but still better to try a test patch.

October 2022

Q. I want to stain my concrete pavers to match a black concrete drive and edging. The pavers were charcoal black but faded to pale grey. I want to know if your concrete stain and sealer would do the job please. Our concrete driveway will need sealing every five years to keep the colour black and want to know if your products will hold the colour if sealed too.

The other product I looked at of yours is the Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

A. Resene Concrete Stain is a transparent stain and will not colour to be black but a washed out version of deep grey. Getting the pavers coated in the same product as your driveway would ensure likeness.

Resene Non-Skid Deck and Path is a paint product suitable for painting directly onto uncoated pavers but will have a different look to the driveway.

October 2022

Q. Do Resene have a water based, clear, concrete driveway sealant?

A. The only product we have that would be suitable for a moderate to low level of vehicular traffic would be Resene Walk-on Concrete Clear Wet Look. Check using the water splash test for the presence of a curing membrane, water splashed onto the concrete should immediately darken the concrete and be absorbed. If the presence of a curing membrane is confirmed by the splash test, diamond grind to remove the existing curing membrane and to achieve a uniform surface profile similar to 180 grit sandpaper. Ensure all grinding dust is removed, this may require wet mopping. Apply two thin coats Resene Walk-on Concrete Clear Wet Look and try to avoid leaving a film on the surface the concrete.

June 2022

Q. We have existing concrete paving around the house. We have access to some second-hand pavers but they are grey. None of your concrete stain colours seem a good match, but I am wondering if the colours can be mixed and can the intensity of the colour be diluted in any way.

A. Tinted Resene Concrete Stain colours can be intermixed. If you do then make sure that you record the ratios of each of the colours that are mixed to ensure you can duplicate the mix to achieve the same colour. For dilution use Resene Concrete Conserver (which is the untinted Resene Concrete Stain).

June 2022

Q. I had a question about a project that I will soon be partaking in having to do with painting a swathe of concrete on a quite heavily trafficked area. There is a number of large concrete steps which I will be attempting to paint, one solid colour each. Also, it doesn't particularly matter if the paint fades away after a while, just that it only needs to be repainted every once in a while.

A. The best product we have for this application is Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path. There may be colour restrictions that apply to the product, we cannot give any durability time frame as the wear cannot be quantified. The paint finish is a texture, this is why we can achieve the slip resistance, but it will be more difficult to clean as a result.

March 2022

Q. I have 200 sponsored concrete pavers in a park where the vitrification is failing. We are looking to re-blacken the lettering using a paintbrush and Resene Concrete Stain Black.

A. Our system for reinstating headstone lettering is to wire brush the lettering to remove loose material then apply two coats of a Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen colour. Using a sharp blade scrape paint from the smooth surface.

A stain is semi-transparent so if you want to make the lettering stand out I recommend you change to a solid paint colour.

For small quantities of paint you can use testpot colours which includes black.

We have found that the Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen option for head stones has been well accepted. I can see an issue if the painted areas fill up with water and do not drain.

This would also be an issue for the stain colour.

Enamel paints have been used for re furbishing headstone lettering but they’re not that durable to weathering and chalk much quicker than a waterborne paint.

Can you do a few as a trial?

October 2021

Q. How do I best strip paving paint off a set of rendered concrete steps. Methylene chloride has minimal effect and similar with a propane torch. I fear too much heat will start to spall the plaster. I haven't tried caustic soda yet. My waterblaster is not up to the job. Is mechanical removal going to be the best option?

A. See if you can hire a small handheld concrete grinder.

October 2021

Q. What are the best products to overpaint powdercoated steel? It is an outdoor spiral stair that has had a black paint over green powder coat. The black is now peeling off. Age of powder I guess at 40yrs.

A. Water blast to remove the black topcoat paint, you may need to get a water blaster that can deliver a reasonably high pressure. After removing the black topcoat apply a coat of Resene Vinyl Etch and finish with a coat of Resene Quick Dry and two coats of Resene Lustacryl topcoat colour.

If staying with a dark colour, apply the Resene CoolColour version of the topcoat colour.

October 2021

Q. What Resene product can I use to paint bright coloured outside concrete steps?

A. Use Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen with SRG Grit added to the first coat at 500g/L.

October 2021

Q. Can I use Resene Summit Roof on my concrete steps?

A. No, Resene Summit Roof is too soft for foot traffic.

September 2021

Q. How do I seal and paint outdoor concrete steps? There is some loose and flaking paints and some bare areas.

A. If the remaining sound paint is a solventborne paint sand to profile for recoating and dust off. Spot prime the bare concrete with Resene Sureseal and finish with two coats of Resene Walk-on in your chosen topcoat colour.

August 2021

Q. I would like to paint a concrete kerb, what is the best paint for this and do I have to use a sealer?

A. Not sure where the kerbing is and what degree of wear resistance is required but the simplest decorative system if the concrete is bare is to apply a seal coat of Resene Sureseal and finish with two coats of Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen.

August 2021

Q. What paint do you recommend to paint on asphalt? I have a large bland area of asphalt at a school which needs enlivening and I was hoping to be able to paint images onto it. It is in a foot traffic area only and I need a range of colours.

A. The prep would be to treat areas of moss/mould infestation with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label instructions. For heavy infestations more applications may be needed. Treat areas of lichen infestation with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted 1:1 with water and leave for at least 48 hours. Note this dilution will give a concentrated bleach solution, so care in mixing and use is required. Scrub down using Resene Heavy Duty Paint Prep and Oil remover diluted and used to label instructions. Do not allow the wash solution to dry out on the surface. Water blast clean to remove dirt and loose surface materials. Then apply a coat of Resene Membrane Primer and follow with two coats of Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen topcoat colours. Apply Resene SRG Additive at 500 g/L to the first coat of each topcoat colour.

June 2021

Q. I have a 35m concrete driveway that is in good physical condition but its colour is inconsistent and looks tired. I need a solution that will give me a fresh natural concrete look where the colour is even. I am considering a resurface and stain alternatives. How long would you expect the stain to last and is it likely to be longer than a resurface? live in Hastings where there are few frosts, rainfall is not usually high and has high sunshine hours. The driveway has light traffic - maximum use is one car driving over it an average of 8 times a week

A. I would expect are surface to outlast a restain, also the stain colours are semi-transparent so any existing marks will show through if not removed.

May 2021

Q. My meta staircase frame is painted black. I would like to paint it white and am unsure of the preparation process. The treads are new and are pine. I want to paint them white and in time have a strip of carpet down the middle to make walking softer. Can you also let me know the steps I need to paint these?

A. For the new pine treads apply a coat of Resene Wood Primer and then two coats of Resene Walk-on and finish with a seal coat of Resene Concrete Wax. Suggest that you should look into installing a white slip self-adhesive strip at the leading edge of each tread.

For the steel sections sand to profile using 220 grit sandpaper, dust off and wipe dust residues off using a wet cloth. Then apply an undercoat of Resene Quick Dry and finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl or Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen.

May 2021

Q. I am looking at painting my terracotta tiles on my outside path with Resene Walk-on. Would I need to use primer?

A. Treat areas of moss/mould infestation with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label instructions. For heavy infestations more applications may be needed. The tiles must be unsealed, this can be checked by splashing water onto the tiles, the water should be immediately absorbed and the wet areas darken.

Treat areas of moss/mould infestation with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label/data sheet instructions. For heavy infestations more applications may be needed Scrub down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions. Do not allow the wash solution to dry out on the surface. Rinse clean or hose down with fresh water and allow to dry out.

Ensure the tiles are clean and dry and apply a seal coat of Resene Sureseal and finish with two coats of Resene Walk-on or Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path (more slip resistant and will withstand more wear but the higher texture requires more regular cleaning).

May 2021

Q. I have been resurfacing my rough driveway with Resene Blacktop and after 80 litres all is well. However on the last and best part of the driveway, using a new 10 litre pail, once dried it is now showing a covering of fine white dust. There was a fine shower of rain shortly after application. Would this have been the cause or is there another explanation?

A. Yes, it is due to the rain hitting the coating before it had completely dried to a water resistant state. You will need to reapply on this area.

April 2021

Q. What is the best product to use on asphalt to paint lines etc?

A. If new, degrease with Resene Heavy Duty Paint Prep and Oil Remover and apply a prime coat of Resene Membrane Primer and finish with two coats of Resene Walk-on or Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

April 2021

Q. I am looking to repaint my concrete steps at the front of my house. The covering is peeling off. Can you tell me what I need to do and use to do it?

A. For the best results diamond grind to remove existing coatings and to achieve a uniform surface profile similar to 180 grit sandpaper. Ensure all grinding dust is removed, this may require wet mopping. Then apply a coat of Resene Sureseal and finish with two coats of Resene Walk-on or Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path, the Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path will have a higher texture and better wet slip resistance but will be more difficult to keep clean.

February 2021

Q. I have new wooden stairs that are bare. I do not want to paint or carpet, but I do want to put something on them so they don't get dirty, and they look better. I think they are made of pine. Is there such a product as a non-slip polyurethane?

A. The only system that we could offer would be three coats of Resene Qristal ClearFloor 1K with ProSelect Anti-Slip added to the final coat.

January 2021

Q. We have a concrete driveway (3 years old) which is blotchy in a number of places. We would like to put some sort of covering over it. We have seen a number a painted driveways but are not keen on a straight painted finish. Do you have a product or process you can suggest that would be more suited and give us a more natural concrete finish?

A. Resene Concrete Stain is a possibility, the product is semi-transparent so may not disguise areas of blotchiness. For vehicular traffic exposure, avoid achieving a high surface film build.

December 2020

Q. I want to paint a external stair case (new) and am trying to keep it the same colour as our house. Can you recommend a paint/stain that can be coloured to match the house as well as hard wearing?

A. If timber apply a coat of Resene Wood Primer followed by a coat of Resene Quick Dry and finish with two coats of Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen. For the treads add Resene SRG Grit to the first coat of Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen at 500 g/L and apply a thin coat of unmodified Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen to seal in the slip resistant layer.

December 2020

Q. What is the best paint option for my interior stair treads? The stairs are in a high traffic area in our home.

A. For a durable coloured paint for the stairs, use Resene Walk-on. It is a satin general purpose flooring and paving paint, based on tough acrylic resins to give maximum durability and abrasion resistance in a single pack finish. It is ideal for use on steps, decking, concrete, porches or suitable primed timber, composite boards and interior floors. It is available in over 1000 colours.

November 2020

Q. I have some 90s particleboard stairs I want to paint. They really need to be sanded back but this will pull up the fibres. Can I use Resene Timber Surface Prep on the stairs prior to painting? Will this give me a smooth finish? They are varnished, although they’re pretty rough and worn.

A. We have not evaluated Resene Timber Surface Prep as a surfacer for stair treads but, in principle, it could work as a low build layer. After sanding, apply a prime coat of Resene Quick Dry then apply the Resene Timber Surface Prep, flush sand the surfacer, dust off, then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry before applying two coats of a waterborne topcoat. The best topcoat for wear would be Resene Uracryl 802, apply two coats. Allow the Resene Quick Dry to cure for at least 48 hours before topcoating. Full cure of the topcoat will require 5-7 days and until full cure is achieved, the coating may be subject to damage.

November 2020

Q. We have a Kauri staircase that also had a yellowing polyurethane. I have sanded it back almost completely to remove all the old varnish and am wondering if, before I re-varnish it, is there something I could stain it with to lighten it and tone down the yellow shade of the Kauri?

A. To stain the staircase complete removal of all existing varnish is required. Then apply a coat of Resene Colorwood Stain and finish with three coats of Resene Aquaclear semi-gloss or satin.

November 2020

Q. We have rimu panels on the entrance and stairway walls, they’re now looking a bit tired. I would like to retain the rimu/timber. What is the best way to prepare the current surface, which is likely to have been polyurethaned? I was thinking of Resene Colorwood Oregon.

A. Stains and oils cannot be applied to a varnished surface, both need to be applied to bare timber. The only suggestion would be to apply Resene Aquaclear with added Resene Colorwood Enhance colour. This adds a subtle colour overlay.

Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, pay particular attention to hand contact areas, then sand to degloss before applying the Resene Colorwood Enhance modified Resene Aquaclear. The Resene Colorwood Enhance colours that you may be able to use for your application would be Red-Brown or Walnut.

August 2020

Q. Do you have a product which is suitable for coating ceramic tiles to make them non-slip? They are outdoor (under cover), but get slippery when walked on with wet shoes, or when there is very high humidity.

A. Clean down the tiled surface to be painted to be clean and free from grease. Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before over coating. The sealer is not designed to be applied as a thick wet film thickness or give opacity, the thinner the coat the better. Then apply two coats of Resene Walk-on or for higher slip resistance Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path. The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks until full cure occurs. In the early stages the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion as these features develop as the film undergoes curing. Note that painting will not reproduce the original features of the tiled surface.

June 2020

Q. I want to know more about your products used to paint concrete driveways. One of our clients of our new house build has a splotchy driveway and the contractor suggested it could be painted. What is the longevity of the paint and will it cover cracks and splotches?

A. The only coating we have for vehicular driveways is Resene Blacktop. The wear will be determined by number of vehicular passes and vehicle type. But areas of higher wear are easily touched up.

Assuming it is a bare substrate, then clean first. Ensure the substrates are clean and grease free. If lichen/algae are present, treat with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label instructions. For lichen leave for 3-4 weeks then water blast. Then apply a seal coat of Resene Sureseal followed by Resene Blacktop.

Q. Can you advise me on the best finish for timber/particle board stairs in a commercial situation where there is low traffic, is indoors and non-wet. I was looking at the Resene Walk-on product, but could also use a polyurethane with grit.

A. Polyurethane clears with added aggregate to achieve dry or wet resistance do not have a great aesthetic look.

The cleanability of Resene Walk-on when used internally can be improved by application of a thin seal coat of Resene Concrete Wax. This is a film forming waterborne clear that gives the look of a wax.

June 2020

Q. I would like to paint some internal stairs. They are tanalised H3 with a Danish oil finish. What preparation is required? I would prefer to use Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen as the topcoat, but will use waterbased enamel if I have to.

A. Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, paying particular attention to hand contact areas. I assume the Danish oil has hard dried? If so then sand to profile then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry and two coats of Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen. I’m not sure if you are painting the stair treads but the system will not give wet slip resistance.

June 2020

Q. I would like to paint the corners of some outside concrete steps so people can see them better at night. Could you advise what is the best paint for this? I already have some concrete undercoat paint. I also have exterior lighting on steps.

A. You could apply Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path in white. You could use Resene FX Nightlight glow-in-the-dark, though this only glows for part of the night once dark as the glow wanes.

May 2020

Q. We want to paint our staircase and wonder what is the best paint to use? It’s particle board.

A. Resene Quick Dry primer would be the best option. You could topcoat with two coats of Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel in your selected colour. Allow a good 5-7 days for the coating to cure and harden before any significant foot traffic if possible.

May 2020

Q. We are looking to paint over existing asphalt. What product would be the best? We have had a look at your Resene Walk-on options, however we are after some brighter colours also. What products would you recommend?

A. If this is for vehicular traffic, we are limited. For foot traffic, clean down to remove all surface contaminants. If mould/lichen/algae are present, treat these areas with Resene Moss & Mould Killer (if lichen is present reduce the dilution to give a stronger solution or spot treat with the concentrated solution, leave for at least two weeks then water blast).

Then apply a coat of Resene Membrane Primer and finish with two coats of Resene Walk-on.

April 2020

Q. Can SRG grit be used with Resene Sonyx 101 or Resene Lumbersider? Can they be applied over each other?

A. The standard SRG Additive can be used in any single pack Resene waterborne coating. The SRG modification is usually in the second coat of a three-coat flooring application only.

All Resene exterior single pack waterborne paints can be overcoated with each other once the first coat is dry, however they can’t be intermixed as wet paint.

April 2020

Q. We have some outdoor pathways around our house that are terracotta tiles, and when wet are extremely slippery. We'd like to be able to paint these with a non-slip resurfacing paint if possible? We saw that you stock one but we wondered if this would work on non-glazed terracotta tiles?

A. Ensure the tiles are clean and apply a seal coat of Resene Sureseal followed by two coats of Resene Non-Skid Deck and Path.

April 2020

Q. We have a front porch that is under cover. It does get the midday sun. We have painted the front door with Resene Lustacryl. Can we use same paint on the porch so the floor and door match?

A. Resene Lustacryl can be applied to any prepared and primed substrate including flooring. When used as a flooring finish it will not have wet slip resistance as it is a semi-gloss finish.

April 2020

Q. I have an extensive patio area of 1 metre square of concrete (bordered ) matching the driveway. Due to a problem when laying the drive 25 years ago they were unable to colour it and instead it was painted with an industrial product. I have had to revisit it every five years but the end result is not what it was and it just looks a dirty grey (it should be black). Do you have a black paint that would be suitable to cover both the patio area and drive?

A. The only possible paint for both areas would be Resene Blacktop, this is a bitumen-based refresher paint for bitumen surfaces.

Concrete will need to be water blasted and then bare concrete primed with Resene Sureseal before applying the Blacktop. Resene Blacktop will turn grey over time as this is the natural outcome of bitumen weathering.

April 2020

Q. I want to paint my concrete driveway, however I'm not sure the best product to use. It looks as though the existing colour is pressed into the concrete. Would I be best to use a stain or paint?

A. Best to stain, Resene Concrete Stain can be used.

April 2020

Q. We want to paint the edge of a concrete step so it stands out in the daytime and glows in the dark. Will the Glow in the Dark paint adhere to concrete please?

A. The glow in the dark time of Resene FX Nightlight is up to 4 hours so will not give a prolonged overnight effect. It will glow once the light goes at night so would be good for the first few hours after dark.

The FX Nightlight cannot be applied direct to concrete, for bare exterior concrete apply a sealer coat of Resene Sureseal followed by two coats of Resene Lumbersider and then finish with a coat of Resene Clearcoat UVS.

April 2020

Q. We need to seal/coat a small asphalt surface to be used as an MPI pad. We have spoken to two adhesion sealing companies who are both looking at epoxy based products.

A. Epoxy cannot be applied over an asphalt based substrate. We recommend the following; wash down using Resene Heavy Duty Paint Prep and Oil Remover diluted and used to label instructions. Apply two coats of Resene Quick Dry and leave the last coat of Resene Quick Dry to dry for at least 48 hours before overcoating. Then apply two coats of Resene Uracryl 402 with Resene SRG Industrial Grit added at the rate of 500 gm/L to the first coat. A pour and spread application method is recommended for the Industrial SRG modified coat to give an even aggregate distribution.

February 2020

Q. I have a two year old galvanised external staircase for residential use. It has tread pattern but is still slippery in the wet.

I am using Resene Roof and Metal Wash followed by Resene GP Metal Primer and then Resene Enamacryl on top. I have yet to paint the treads and have been advised to use Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path. I was told the metal substrate is fine even though it’s not on the data sheet.

A. Resene Non Skid Deck & Path can be applied to any appropriately prepared and primed substrate including galvanised metal.

January 2020

Q. I am planning to repaint some exterior, old concrete stairs and landing. I have waterblasted 95% of the paint off and will use an acid based etching compound to clean. Can you recommend a good long lasting paint to finish it?

A. If the areas are only subject to foot traffic, spot prime bare profiled concrete with Resene Sureseal then apply two coats of Resene Walk-on or Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path, the Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path is a higher texture finish but with better wet slip resistance than Resene Walk-on.

January 2020

Q. Please advise a suitable concrete sealer for a new driveway with a 3% black oxide added.

A. The only clear product we have for this is Resene Walk-on Concrete Clear Wet Look.

December 2019

Q. I am preparing to repaint carpark markings and I wish to do a thorough clean before doing so. Which Resene product will clean adequately without marking the tar-seal surface?

A. We recommend Resene Heavy Duty Paint Prep and Oil Remover.

December 2019

Q. We need to paint external stairs (H3 pine). What do you recommend?

A. If new apply a full primer coat of Resene Wood Primer and finish with two coats of Resene Walk-on.

December 2019

Q. I'm interested in whether your anti-slip paint would be suitable on a timber boardwalk deck in an estuary environment.

A. Yes, apply a full coat of Resene Wood Primer and finish with two coats of Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

December 2019

Q. I need to purchase pale grey concrete paint for my steps and patio.  Is this something that Resene can help me with?

A. Yes, we recommend Resene Walk-on.

November 2019

Q. We are painting arrows to classes to help students get around the school without being lost. What type of paint would be best to use and how do we clean the concrete?

A. The concrete would need to be cleaned down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions.

Then you can paint the design using Resene Lumbersider or Resene testpot paint (2 coats).

Do you think that the paint finish needs to be slip resistant?  If yes, then you could use SRG Grit in the paint or change to Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

November 2019

Q. I have applied two coats of concrete stain to my pavers 10 days ago. In places they are shiny and feel sticky during the heat of the day. They were plain concrete and water blasted at 3,000psi prior to staining. It was an extremely hot day when I stained them. I have enough stain to apply a third coat on a cooler day if this will help?

A. Two coats of concrete stain should be sufficient. The ideal outcome is to have little or no stain sitting on top of the concrete, this may be why you are seeing stickiness, probably worse when the surface is heated by the sun.

I would not apply a third coat. Leave the stained surfaces to weather for a month or so to see if the stickiness dissipates.

November 2019

Q. We have a footpath at about 1 in 8 to 1 in 12 slope.  It is a glazed paving brick and can get quite slippery.   Do you have a non-slip brush or roller applied coating?

A. Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path would be the coating we would recommend for foot traffic areas.

The challenge is to achieve adhesion to the glazed tile surface. The product we have is Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer.

Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before over coating. The sealer is not designed to be applied as a thick wet film thickness or give opacity, the thinner the coat the better. Then apply two coats of Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

November 2019

Q. What type of non-slip paint should I use for external timber treads?

A. Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path would be a great option for your requirements. If previously painted with acrylic paint, you could apply this directly over it. If bare timber, you should prime first with Resene Quick Dry primer.

October 2019

Q. Can I use Resene Blacktop over concrete and if so, what do I use to fill the cracks in the asphalt before I use Resene Blacktop?

A. Bare concrete will need to be cleaned to remove dirt/oil and bio growth. Clean down using Resene Heavy Duty Paint Prep and Oil Remover following instructions. To the treat areas of bio growth use Resene Moss & Mould Killer following label instructions. Rinse clean with water and allow to dry out. Then prime bare concrete with Resene Sureseal before applying the Resene Blacktop.

We have no fillers for cracks, you will need to use cold applied bitumen based filler, which may be available from a hardware store.

October 2019

Q. What product would you recommend to use over old concrete pavers? These are approx. 200x200 in size and we need to rejuvenate them by either sealing or using a stain type product in similar colourways. They are variable light terracotta.

A. Apply a saturation coat of Resene Solventborne Aquapel and leave to cure for at least 48 hours then apply two coats of Resene Concrete Stain.

October 2019

Q. What do I use to paint grey concrete pavers? I would like to modernise them with a rough look (sort of stucco). They are the 500 x 500 pavers that were probably put down when the house was built in 2006. At present, they are laying on dirt with stones around them. They are a walkway to our patio, so needs to be able to withstand constant foot traffic and hot sun all day.

A. Suggested system is to apply a saturation coat of Resene Solventborne Aquapel to the clean pavers and allow curing for at least 48 hours, then apply a saturation coat of Resene Sureseal  and finish with two coats of Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

October 2019

Q. I need to specify paint for a footbridge walking surface.  Would you recommend a product. I am most concerned about coefficient of friction and durability - is it acceptable to paint only the top surface and what conditions does this need to be completed in?

The substrate is rough-sawn timber in an external environment on the West Coast, exposed to rain and approx. 500m from the coastline. The bridge is reasonably used with all kinds of footwear.

A. The only system we could offer would be to prime the decking with Resene Wood Primer and then apply two coats of Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

September 2019

Q. I manage a property which has some concrete steps which have been painted but the tenant complains they are slippery. I don't know the paint that was used and it has started flaking off. I have been googling anti slip ideas and came across your Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path Paint. Would it work if we painted over the existing paint?

A. Strip the existing paint system by diamond grinding or chemical stripping. Check using the water splash test for the presence of a curing membrane, water splashed onto the concrete should immediately darken the concrete and be absorbed. If there is no darkening of the concrete, diamond grind to achieve a uniform surface profile similar to 180grit sandpaper. Ensure all grinding dust is removed, this may require wet mopping.

Then apply a seal coat of Resene Sureseal and two coats of Resene Walk-on or Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path if a higher level of wet slip resistance is required. The higher the wet slip resistance, the harder it will be to clean.

July 2019

Q. Looking for a non-slip deck paint water based texture to go over aluminium.

A. We recommend Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path. Degrease the bare aluminium first, then prime the aluminium with a coat of Resene Galvo One.

If the aluminium is smooth/shiny wet abrade using 220 Wet and Dry sandpaper.

June 2019

Q. We have a very slippery brick path. Do you have an anti-slip paint that can be applied to bricks? Or any other suggestion as to a better solution? The bricks are not glazed and have no obvious algae or mould.

A. Wash down using Resene Heavy Duty Paint Prep and Oil Remover diluted and used to label instructions, allow the bricks to dry out then apply a saturation coat of Resene Sureseal and finish with two coats of Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

Note that if the paint profile fills with water and freezing occurs the slip resistance is lost.

June 2019

Q. Is Resene Concrete Clear suitable for resealing an exposed aggregate drive?

A. Resene Walk-on Concrete Clear Wet Look would be our recommendation.

June 2019

Q. I am using path and patio non slip on concrete which is old but in good condition. I have been given conflicting advice as to the requirement for undercoat, could you please advise me on this?

A. If there are signs of mould or algae, treat with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions, then if you can waterblast.  Allow to dry out and then apply a saturation coat of Resene Sureseal before applying topcoats of Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

June 2019

Q. Is Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path appropriate for a bitumen driveway? How do I prep the surface? Will it ice over?

A. Ensure the bitumen is clean and free from lichen and bio growth then apply a coat of Resene Membrane Primer followed by two coats of Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path. If the paint profile gets full of water and then freezes, the slip resistance will not be present.

June 2019

Q. I want to stain my access stairs with a product like Resene Kwila Timber Stain. However I would like to add a gritted texture to the stain to ensure that I comply with D1 of the building code, but I don't want to put adhesive tapes on the treads. Is there a product you would recommend to add?

A. We cannot produce an exterior stain with slip resistance, Resene stains are designed to erode upon weathering and as a consequence an aggregate used to give slip resistance cannot be held within the stain coating.

June 2019

Q. I have some timber steps leading up to a balcony, which were painted many years ago; there is no apparent rot but the paint has flaked significantly. I intend to remove algae, sand and apply Resene TimberLock. I was thinking of applying Resene Quick Dry and then a bitumen waterproof membrane. Then I'd apply Resene Membrane Primer followed by Resene Sonyx 101.

Firstly, do you think a bitumen membrane is overkill? Would Resene TimberLock and using a solventborne wood primer be adequate? Water does pond on the steps when it rains.

Secondly, I noticed that Resene TimberLock has dibutyl phthalate in it from the SDS. Is this plasticiser going to cause problems with applied to waterborne coatings and the bitumen membrane?

A. What is the timber? Bituminous membranes can be but are not usually applied to timber substrates. Treat mould/algae with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions.

Wipe excess Resene TimberLock at time of application and leave to cure for at least 48 hours before applying a full coat of Resene Wood Primer. Then finish with two coats of Resene Walk-on.

May 2019

Q. What is the best way to get an even flow with deck and path paint?

A. If rolling out, you'll want to ensure you work in a methodical and uniform manner (typically along the entire length of a board or two if painting a deck) ensuring you keep a wet edge on the paint you have just applied while you roll the next areas so they blend in. You should ensure also, that you aren't painting in direct sunlight as this will have the paint dry extremely quickly and show roller/brush marks.

Ensure you are using a No.1 Roller sleeve (8mm Dacron) if rolling.

May 2019

Q. I finished applying Walk-on paint around lunch time. But a shower started at 6pm.  Is that okay with the painting?

A. If there was no obvious damage to the paint then there is no need for concern.

February 2019

Q. Do you have a product for painting outside timber stairs that has a grip/sand in the product for anti-slip?

A. We recommend Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

February 2019

Q. I have a couple of questions about your Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path product. Would this be suitable for application onto a new concrete residential driveway (some of it has a broom finish and some smooth)?  Do you have an estimated lifespan for this product in this situation, non-vehicle traffic?

A. Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path can be applied to new concrete after application of a seal coat of Resene Sureseal. Smooth/glossy areas should be acid etched to give a profile similar to 180 grit sandpaper.

The paint can withstand foot traffic and a degree of vehicular traffic but we don't recommend it for the latter. It is not possible to put a time to maintenance on the product but from experience with a normal level of foot traffic, I would expect at least five years before maintenance would be required.

February 2019

Q. I'm a PTA member at a primary school; we have recently extended a concrete pad and installed a basketball hoop. What would you recommend to paint the concrete with? It's outside, so needs to be weatherproof and non-slip proof. I suspect we need to use some sort of preparation on the concrete/primer then the final colours and lines. Any advice and rough costs would be most appreciated. The court area is 7m x 11m.

A. Ensure the concrete is clean and free of laitance and any curing membrane, splash water onto the concrete and check that the water is immediately absorbed and the wet concrete darkens. If this does not occur, then the concrete will need to be diamond ground to achieve an even profile texture similar to 180 grit sandpaper.

Then apply a seal coat of Resene Sureseal and finish with two coats of Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

February 2019

Q. We have shifted into a new home. It has around a 100 sq metre cobblestone concrete driveway, which has previously been painted but needs repainting. I have waterblasted it to get the dirt and any loose paint off. The cobblestones are fairly deep. I need to paint it the same colour as the veranda. It is a blue grey which I purchased from Resene. The driveway leads to a double garage.

What type of paint do I use? This is the 19th house I have painted, all with Resene and I would use no other as I am very satisfied.

The only traffic on the driveway is two cars getting in and out of a double garage and only twice a day. Not much really but enough for a bit of wear and tear. We turn off the main driveway into the entrance driveway, which is the cobblestone part. The house is 100 years old and the driveway is in concrete but in the form of cobblestones.

A. We do not have a dedicated waterborne paint for vehicular driveways, but we have had good success using Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

Spot prime bare concrete with Resene Sureseal then apply the two coats of Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path, you will need to leave the paint to dry without trafficking for at least five days.

December 2018

Q. We have a small outside terrace covered with Firth concrete pavers that we want to paint. We will want it to be able to take light foot traffic. What paint system would you advise please?

A. Use a seal coat of Resene Sureseal then two coats of Resene Walk-on.

November 2018

Q. I wish to paint an outdoor foot traffic area with Resene Walk-on. It has been coated previously, probably with waterbased coating, as the surface colour can be rubbed off with meths. There are some areas of bare concrete and some patching of cracks needed, plus a general clean-up.

Can you tell me the best process to adopt, from cleaning to undercoating to topcoating?

A. Scrub down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions then waterblast. Spot prime bare concrete with Resene Sureseal then apply two coats of Resene Walk-on.

Without seeing out the cracks and filling with cementitious filler such as Resene Multistep, crack repairs will be difficult to achieve.

November 2018

Q. I have a new concrete patio. To prevent marking or staining is there a clear finish that can be applied?

A. We recommend Resene Walk-on Concrete Clear. The concrete must be fully cured before application. This normally requires 28 days.

November 2018

Q. I have an exterior concrete area, which has become patchy and looks porous. I would like to purchase a tinted concrete seal that will not cover up the white squares, but provide an even glossy looking coat. I am okay with the concrete colour looking patchy, as I quite like it like that, but I want the finish to not be so porous. So I am thinking a tinted concrete sealant.

A. Try Resene Walk-on Concrete Clear Wet Look.

November 2018

Q. I am looking at coating tiles, could you recommend a suitable substrate and clear topcoat for exterior tiles? Slip resistance isn’t needed.

A. We recommend Resene Walk-on Concrete Clear.

November 2018

Q. Can I paint outdoor concrete footpaths, one half is two months old and the other is old? If so, what do I use and how do I prep it?

A. Apply a seal coat of Resene Sureseal then two coats of Resene Walk-on.

November 2018

Q. Can Resene Walk-on flooring and paving paint be applied be applied directly over the Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path paint which we plan to waterblast beforehand?

A. Yes as long as the Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path is clean.

November 2018

Q. We are a theatre company that has an open air playhouse. We have been trying to solve the problem of slippery surfaces when it rains. We also use a lot of fake blood, which is also slippery. We also need a surface that is not gritty (anti-skid) as actors are often dragged etc.

A. To achieve any wet slip resistance there has to be an aggregate addition to the paint. Resene Walk-on has a small sized aggregate that does give a degree of wet slip resistance so this is what I would suggest you look to use. Assuming the existing coating is sound then sand and apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry and then the two coats of Resene Walk-on.

October 2018

Q. I have a slab of concrete underneath my clothesline that has discoloured. I have waterblasted it but there is no change, so I would like to paint over it. What would I need to prime the concrete with, and what sort of paint would you recommend?

A. Apply a seal coat of Resene Sureseal and then apply two coats of Resene Walk-on.

September 2018

Q. I am looking for options for coating an existing concrete carport. Would you have: a clear coat option or a colour option to match a neutral concrete colour? Must be hot tyre pick up resistant.

A. We recommend Resene Uracryl system is the only paint we have for this application. Apply a seal coat of Resene Armourcote 510 then two coats of Resene Uracryl with Resene Industrial SRG added to the first coat of Resene Uracryl at 500g/L.

Concrete should be diamond ground to achieve a uniform texture similar to 180 grit sandpaper.

September 2018

Q. I would like to stain the concrete paths around my house. The concrete is 40 years old but in pretty good condition. How should I prepare it and which products do Resene supply for the job?

A. Treat concrete with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label directions then waterblast. Apply two coats of Resene Concrete Stain.

September 2018

Q. I am restoring an outdoor slate terrace. Which of your products would you recommend to bring out the colours of the slate and withstand foot traffic to the front door?

A. Apply two thin coats of Resene Walk-on Concrete Clear Wet Look.

August 2018

Q. We have some very old weathered and damaged concrete steps that have been painted some time ago. It’s all a bit flaky and I would like to paint them in a flat paint to tidy them up. I have waterblasted already, so what would you recommend?

A. Spot prime bare concrete with Resene Sureseal then apply two coats of Resene Walk-on.

August 2018

Q. We are using a Steel Tray-dec floor system below a tiled terrace, with concrete block perimeter walls and not in a sea spray zone. What coating system would you recommend to the underside to protect against corrosion?

A. Wash down using Resene Heavy Duty Paint Prep and Oil Remover diluted and used to label instructions. Apply Resene Armourcote 220 to a dry film thickness of 75 microns and then finish with Resene Armourcote 510 to a DFT of 150 microns.

August 2018

Q. Please could you recommend a clear coat to apply over the Resene Concrete Stain?

A. We recommend Resene Walk-on Concrete Clear. We usually try to avoid building up a coating thickness above the concrete level wherever possible as this can see a more rapid wear occur.

August 2018

Q. I have a ceramic tile porch that gets extremely slippery when wet. What could I apply to it to give it more grip - preferably something almost clear?

A. Sorry, but there is no slip resistant clear available. The addition of aggregate to achieve wet slip resistance does not give an aesthetically acceptable clear finish. We do have fully pigmented systems, such as Resene Walk-on with Resene SRG Grit or Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

July 2018

Q. I'm trying to paint some concrete and was wondering if Resene has any products that can do this? I have no preference for clear or colour. We've just pulled up the carpet in a small office. The concrete under it is looking a bit worse for wear and I was thinking of doing a bluey-grey overcoat. Will it need a couple of coats?

A. The floor will need diamond grinding to produce a uniform surface resembling, 180 grit sandpaper. The dust will need to be vacuumed up and then mopped to remove all traces of dust. You can then apply three coats of Resene Aquapoxy with the first coat thinned 20-30% water.

Alternatively after grinding apply a coat of Resene ConcreteSeal 3in1 and two coats of Resene Walk-on.

May 2018

Q. We have been told that Resene may have a product that can be used over bitumen and then painted.

A. Clean down to remove surface contaminants using Resene Heavy Duty Paint Prep and Oil Remover following label directions. Apply a prime coat of Resene Membrane Primer, and then finish with two coats of Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path for a foot trafficable finish.

April 2018

Q. I have a courtyard with terracotta coloured, stamped concrete paving. The colour has worn off patchily, exposing rough grey concrete in some areas, while sheltered areas retain the terracotta colour. I want to repaint it grey. Answers to other queries, sometimes recommend Resene Sureseal followed by Resene Walk-on paint, and sometimes Resene Concrete Stain, so I'm confused as to the best approach in my situation. The stain doesn't sound as if it will provide the colour cover I need.

A. Resene Concrete Stain is a semi-transparent stain for concrete, not a solid colour. Resene Sureseal is the recommended primer for bare concrete, where a solid paint finish such as Resene Walk-on is to be used.

April 2018

Q. I want to improve the look, and change the colour of old terracotta tiles around a swimming pool. Would paving paint be suitable for this application? The tiles are old (20 years +) and don’t appear to be glazed. They are mortared together and, generally, in good condition.

A. Scrub down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions. When dry apply a seal coat of Resene Sureseal and finish with two coats of Resene Walk-on.

March 2018

Q. I have a traffic guard deck over my garage and I’d like to paint it as I’m not a fan of the colour. What sort of paint should I use? It doesn’t appear to be overcoated at all. I can still clearly see the fibres of the traffic guard but I’d like to go to a mid-strength grey as opposed to the very, very light grey it currently is.

A. There are a number of fiberglass reinforced acrylic coating systems, used to waterproof pedestrian decks (plywood or fibre cement construction) particularly where there is a habitable space below.

Typically the system will continue to perform its primary function as a weather-tight membrane. However, the surface will weather and chalk over time, depending on the degree of UV light it receives and the amount and nature of the surface foot traffic and repainting is generally required to restore aesthetics. As a consequence of weathering, fibreglass strands can become exposed due to erosion of the surface and the overall appearance becomes unacceptable.

Resene X-400 is an ultra-high build membrane coating and has been recommended to improve the overall film build of the system and seal off any exposed fibreglass strands.

This specification does not alter the weathertightness of the original decking system, and is not suitable to restore weathertightness if the original membrane system is failing. Repainting is generally straightforward unless there is cracking and/or delamination of the membrane system which can occur as a result of substrate movement or water ingress. If this is the case, or if there are water ingress issues, please contact Resene Technical services for advice.

Step 1: Treat moss and mould with Resene Moss & Mould Killer; use as directed on the  label.

Note I: For heavy infestations, an additional application(s) may be needed.

Step 2: Thoroughly scrub down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions to remove all dirt, dust, grease, any moss and mould residue, chalk, cobwebs and other contaminants. Alternatively waterblast up to 3000psi

Step 3: Thoroughly scrape and sand to remove all loose and flaking paint and to provide a good key for subsequent coats. Then roll on two coats of Resene X-400 and overcoat with two coats of Resene Walk-on.

March 2018

Q. We would like to specify ground paint in the public realm, which is able to withstand foot traffic and occasional vehicle traffic. It needs to be non-skid and have a vibrant colour finish, if possible. It will be applied to concrete and bitumen.

We would ideally like it to be an orange colour similar to Resene Adrenalin.

Could you please describe the process which it can be applied? Does the surface require priming?

A. We recommend Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

The product is usually roller applied; due to the aggregate size used to produce the non-slip texture, a specific airless spray unit will be required for spray application.

The tint base required for the Resene Adrenalin is not standard tint base for the product line, but may be able to be made from one of our yellow tint bases.

January 2018

Q. Are any of your products suitable for rolling on to a concrete driveway, to provide a texture finish?

A. You can use Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

January 2018

Q. I have put some tiles over a concrete path, which turned out to be very slippery. Is there a product that can be painted over? The tiles are glazed.

A. Ensure the tiles are clean and then apply a coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and leave to cure for 24 hours (best if there is no rainfall or condensation over this time) then apply two coats of Resene Walk-on.

January 2018

Q. I'm looking for an anti-slip friction/textured paint, for a timber deck footbridge, to prevent a slippery surface during wet weather?

A. We recommend Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

January 2018

Q. What can I use to re-colour Firth concrete outdoor tiles?

A. We recommend Resene Concrete Stain.

December 2017

Q. I want to use your Resene Blacktop paint on our asphalt drive, which has minor moss in places. I assume I need to use your Resene Moss & Mould Killer. How long after I treat with the Resene Moss & Mould Killer can I paint the drive?

A. If it is only sporadic infestation, I would take a paint brush and dab the undiluted Resene Moss & Mould Killer onto the areas (wear protective clothing, gloves and eye protection). Leave for at least a week, then waterblast. This should allow time for the lichen to become loosened for removal.

December 2017

Q. Can I use Resene Non Skid Deck & Path on floor tiles? The tiles are in good condition on an external patio. The tiles are ceramic and they are glazed but with a non-slip finish. They are about 40 years old.

A. Apply an adhesion coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to the cleaned tiles and leave to dry for 48 hours, and then apply two coats of Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

November 2017

Q. We want to find a suitable non-slip paint coating, for a wheelchair test ramp. The surface of the ramp will be made of plywood.

A. Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path has the best wet slip resistance of our waterborne paints, and can be applied to any appropriately primed substrate. Use Resene Wood Primer and then Resene Quick Dry as the undercoat.

November 2017

Q. Does Resene have a tinted concrete sealer that protect exterior concrete to make it easier to clean and maintain. It's for a patio so just foot traffic. Would prefer something water based if possible.

A. We recommend Resene Walk-on Concrete Clear.

November 2017

Q. What products can I use to change the colour of my grey patio pavers to an off white or beige colour?

A. Assuming the pavers are made from standard porous concrete with a slight profile, clean the surface using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash. Rinse clean with freshwater and allow drying until free of excess surface water. Prime with one coat of Resene Walk-on thinned 10% with water. Allow two hours before applying two finishing coats of Resene Walk-on.

October 2017

Q. I have a painted concrete deck and path. The previous owners painted it with a lighter colour, which has flaked and worn off in places. I have waterblasted to remove this flaking paint and expose the original darker colour. Could you please advise the appropriate products to repaint with? I would like to repaint with a charcoal colour, which was the colour it was originally painted.

A. We have two products that would be suitable, depending on the surface finish you are requiring. Resene Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path and Resene Walk-on. These are both based on tough, flooring grade, acrylic resins.

If the substrate already has a significant texture and you are not looking to add to that, the use of Resene Walk-on will be perfect, as the texture will telegraph through.

If the substrate doesn't have a lot of texture and you want to add to this, then Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path should be used which contains an aggregate, to give non-skid properties.

September 2017

Q. I am currently involved in the resurfacing of a train station platform. One of the items to be addressed is the white line at the edge of the platform.

A. We would offer Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path for this application. The product meets the requirements set out in NZTA P33 2017. The paint is a waterborne product and so can easily be recoated when required. The recoat cycle is wholly dependent upon wear.

July 2017

Q. I’m looking for a paint to provide extra grip for some steel ramps. The deck treads are perforated. It’s a small surface area, but gets slippery when wet.

A. Apply a coat of Resene Galvo One, then two coats of Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

July 2017

Q. I am seeking a product to specify for painting cracked, concrete steps. Do you have one or more products that you can recommend for this purpose?

A. Repairs to hairline cracks can be a difficult thing to achieve and ensure that cracking does not reappear again. If the cracks are due to earthquakes, then cracking may reoccur in a future quake. Epoxy injection is the best way to address cracking but this will require the services of a specialist company. If you are looking for an alternative to epoxy injection, then the cracks must be ground out to provide a ‘v’’ for filling with a product such as Resene Construction Systems MultiStop or sandable two pack epoxy filler.

June 2017

Q. We have just renewed some external stairs. They are made of plywood and the stairs will need painting or staining or something. We would like some advice on which way to go. Is there a hard wearing product that would work and is also non-slip? They are used a lot so we obviously don't want to be repainting them every month or so. My husband thought a stain might be a better way to go rather than paint, or maybe there is an industrial sort of product that might be a better idea.

A. There are no semi-transparent (stain) finishes that are slip-resistant trafficable surfaces. Suggest that you prime with 1-2 coats of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and then apply two coats of Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

May 2017

Q. Is Resene stain or exterior paint okay to use on concrete paving slabs? If so, which one would be best to use?

A. Resene Woodsman and Resene Woodsman Decking Stain can only be applied to a timber substrate and are not designed for cementitious substrates. We only recommend Resene Concrete Stain for staining concrete pavers.

May 2017

Q. I have the best part of a 4 litre can of Summit Roof left over and I need to paint new wooden outdoor steps the same shade. Would the Resene Summit Roof product perform OK as a walk on product?

A. Resene Summit Roof is formulated using a relatively soft conventional waterborne resin which means that resistance to foot traffic will not be as good as Resene Walk-on, which is purpose designed for walking on. Also the Resene Summit Roof product does not contain aggregate to give wet slip resistance.

April 2017

Q. I am looking to recoat a previously painted driveway and it must be water based. Is Resene Blacktop suitable or should I use the non-slip pavement paint, it’s only for foot traffic.

A. If it is an asphalt driveway, then Resene Blacktop is suitable.

March 2017

Q. I need enough textured paint to cover about 240sqm. I was thinking about using the Resene Deck and Path paint but it has limited colours. Since I have a largish order would you be able to mix a colour for me? The colour would be some type of off white.

A. Custom colours can be made in this product, though not all colours can be achieved. The best idea is to ask your local Resene ColorShop staff about the sort of colour you would like and then our Colour Lab can see whether that could be matched in this product.

March 2017

Q. If I need a non slip product am I better to use Resene Walk-on or Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path?

A. The best wet slip resistance is achieved with the Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

February 2017

Q. What paint would you recommend for painting concrete steps?

A. Resene Walk-on applied over a suitability prepared and primed substrate.

February 2017

Q. Can I put waterbased Resene Walk-on over old (8 years) oil based paint on my back porch? It has a concrete surface.

A. You will need to thoroughly sand the existing paint, dust off and then apply the Resene Walk-on. We can’t guarantee that the old paint will remain attached however.

November 2016

Q. Can Resene Blacktop be used on a concrete path?

A. Yes, concrete should be porous and if unpainted apply a seal coat of Resene Sureseal first.

November 2016

Q. Can Resene Blacktop be used on a concrete path?

A. Yes, concrete should be porous and if unpainted apply a seal coat of Resene Sureseal first.

November 2016

Q. We have a weathered coloured concrete driveway that needs a makeover. Apart from a good waterblast what other prep do you suggest? - I do note when waterblasted the existing dye colour still washes out. What is the best Resene solid colour finishing product?

A. The continued leaching of colour is unusual as coloured concrete usually has a solid non water soluble pigment added to give the colour. Treat any areas of moss/algae/mould with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to llabel directions. Then waterblast and when dry apply a saturation coat of Resene Sureseal then finish with two coats of Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

November 2016

Q. In your most recent Habitat book it talks about reviving concrete pavers with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash and then sealing with Resene Concrete Conserver – what is this?

A. Resene Concrete Conserver is a non-tinted version of Resene Concrete Stain.

October 2016

Q. I have steps to my house which are painted. I need to rejuvenate them as the paint is worn out in some places and soiled. What type of paint and what kind of preparation/cleaning is required?

A. You will need to strip the coatings back to bare concrete, and then apply a coat of Resene Sureseal and two coats of Resene Walk-on.

September 2016

Q. We are investigating nonslip surfaces on public timber outdoor boardwalks and are looking at the Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path paint. Can you advise if any samples have been done on rough sawn timber?

A. Slip resistance testing is always done by application to a smooth surface; there is no way to establish a grading of rough sawn so any test result would only be applicable to the particular profile that was tested.

August 2016

Q. I have 120 square metres of patio tiles. They are old and brown and I think ceramic. Is there a coating I could apply?

A. Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease. Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before overcoating. Then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl. Roll all coats using the recommended roller sleeve. The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks until full cure occurs. In the early stages the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion as these features develop as the film undergoes curing. Note that this is a decorative system painting will not reproduce the original features of the tiled surface and damage may occur if furniture is dragged across the painted surface even after full cure has occurred.

June 2016

Q. I have pre-painted concrete pedestrian areas, exterior, approx. 50 sq. metres and the paint is lifting due to rising moisture. How do I fix the problem before repainting?

A. This is a common issue. The only way that we have found to give some control is to remove the paint completely and apply a saturation coat of Resene Aquapel then re-apply the paint system. Resene Aquapel is a water repellent treatment. This will give hold back of a certain water pressure but unfortunately its ability to hold water back may be exceeded in some conditions.

June 2016

Q. Do you have a paint suitable to apply to old concrete paths that would both wear well and not be a slip problem if wet?

A. We recommend Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

June 2016

Q. I am going to paint my outdoor concrete patio with Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path in Resene Landscape Grey. The catalogue shows I can have the CoolColour option. Would the CoolColour non-skid or the regular non-skid be the best option for my 25 square metre outdoor patio - in Christchurch, north facing, surrounded on three sides by my house?

A. You could use either for this but the Resene CoolColour™ version will reflect more heat than the non-cool version. Please note that CoolColours are not cool to touch.

June 2016

Q. I need to paint a concrete floor. It is undercover but some water will run over it. 200 children will walk it once a day.

A. You will need to prepare the floor to a toothed surface profile, prime with Resene ConcreteSeal 3 in 1 followed by Resene Walk-on acrylic coating. This is a tough light duty system ideal for foot traffic.

May 2016

Q. Could you please recommend a water based paint suitable to be applied to treated pine stairs that have been coated in bitumen paint? The finish coat needs to be trafficable and also be applied to concrete.

A. Clean down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash following label directions then apply a coat of Resene Membrane Primer to the bitumen. Seal concrete with Resene Sureseal and then apply two coats of Resene Walk-on.

April 2016

Q. To bring our steps up to Health and Safety standards I need to paint a 50mm strip along the front of each tread. Some are steel checker plate and some are on tiles with grip type nosings. Both are external stairs. What is the best product for both situations?

A. The 50mm stripe can be Resene Uracryl 402 and if needed broadcast Resene SRG Grit into the wet paint film for traction.

April 2016

Q. Is there a paint or stain product that can be used on concrete pavers? My client has purchased some concrete blocks usually used for cladding a house to use as paving because they were on a spectacular clearance price. Unfortunately they're not the best colour to match the house. Specifically they are a Firth Manorstone and Devonstone product in colours called 'tranquility' and 'serenity' and they are 'tumbled' to make them look like stone. They seem porous enough to accept a paint or stain. I'd like to make them a dark grey or charcoal colour if possible. If it is possible to alter their colour, the next question will be about the method and timing. Spray? Before they're laid or after?

A. I would avoid applying a solid paint finish as the paint on the top of the block profile would be quickly worn away. Staining with Resene Concrete Stain would be the only possible option. There may well be a colour difference when a stain colour is applied to different block colours. This is due to the fact that the stain is semi-transparent and the final colour is modified by the base colour.

February 2016

Q. We have old concrete steps. What should we paint them in?

A. Our recommendation would be to use Resene Walk-on for a fine texture or Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path for maximum wet slip resistance.

February 2016

Q. Is the Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path paint available in other colours?

A. Yes we can tint a range of colours that are not on the colour chart in the product. Suggest you call or visit your nearest Resene ColorShop to check if the colours you are seeking can be tinted in the product.

February 2016

Q. Do you have a clear sealer for clay cobblestone pavers?

A. Resene Concrete Conserver. This will give a wet look to the pavers.

February 2016

Q. Can I paint my driveway in a suitable textured paint in the colour Resene Pravda?

A. The only possible product would be Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path. The coating will cope with light vehicular traffic.

January 2016

Q. I want to paint weathered ply with Waterborne Sidewalk paint. I have cleaned the deck, waterblasted it and used Resene Moss & Mould Killer. Do I apply Resene pigmented sealer or some other sealer or go directly to the Sidewalk paint?

A. Apply Resene TimberLock (ensure excess is wiped off at time of application), leave for 48 hours then apply a coat of Resene Wood Primer and then topcoat. Note that Resene Sidewalk is now a deleted product, for foot trafficable areas this has been replaced with Resene Walk-on.

January 2016

Q. We are looking at getting Resene Blacktop applied to our approx 45 metre drive and car park area. Can you please advise suitability for a full drive way (and not patched areas)? Is it suitable for an approx 35 to 40 degree sloped drive? How much fade is there likely to be and how often would you advise recoating?

A. Yes we have had the product used as a full driveway refurbishment. The slope is getting steep which would place more stress on the coating so it may wear quicker. Coating will need 3-5 days to develop final adhesion and film properties.

The intense initial black colour will fade according to the level of direct U.V. It could develop a grey tone after 6 months of intense weathering.

January 2016

Q. I am wanting to stain my driveway as have had half of the drive repaved when our retaining wall was replaced so have two different types of concrete and two very different colours. I want to tie them in a bit better by staining them one uniform colour. Now I'm not sure what to use as I don't want to change the texture of the drive at all as the drive is very steep so don't want it to have less grip. What would you recommend I use?

A. Resene Concrete Stain is the only product we can offer for this. However we cannot guarantee that you will achieve a uniform colour to both areas as the stain is only available in a limited range of colours and being semi-transparent the existing colour will influence the final colour. Suggest you visit a Resene ColorShop to view the colour range.

December 2015

Q. I have a stenciled concrete pathway (not a driveway). The terracotta colour was achieved by sprinkling a powder. Can I use any exterior paint on it?

A. As long as the concrete is clean and sound, you can use Resene Walk-on. Suggest you prepare the area to be painted by waterblasting.

November 2015

Q. What can I use to stain over concrete pavers used for foot traffic only.

A. For staining use Resene Concrete Stain.

November 2015

Q. We are building our house and have a floor grate outside on a terrace. It will be galvanised or stainless steel. Do you have a black paint that I can use to coat it that can withstand exterior and walking on?

A. If the grate is stainless I would suggest leaving it uncoated as this metal is not designed to be painted. Galvanising can be painted by priming first with Resene Galvo One and then overcoating with Resene Walk-on. Resistance to foot traffic will be determined by frequency and type of foot traffic.

November 2015

Q. I have a decorative exposed concrete driveway which has had oil on it. Turps didn't remove it. Is there something else which is more suitable for this? More importantly I wish to roll a (clear) concrete sealer which will darken it a little, and help mitigate the oil stains. This was applied when new but wore off quickly.

A. The complete removal of oil staining can be challenging especially if the oil has penetrated deep into the substrate. Suggest you try Resene Brush Cleaner on the oil areas. Apply the Resene Brush Cleaner then scrub the area with a stiff nylon brush, leave for five minutes then wash off.

October 2015

Q. Can I use paving paint on metal?

A. If you are referring to Resene Walk-on the answer is yes provided the metal is primed with an appropriate Resene metal primer.

October 2015

Q. I am looking for a paint for my driveway which is on a slope and comprises concrete blocks. Can you help with a recommended product? The blocks are driven on. It is at least 20 years old. I clean it with a waterblaster occasionally and much of the surface of the blocks has the aggregate exposed due to weathering.

A. Only possible suggestion is to apply a saturation coat of Resene Sureseal then apply Resene Blacktop.

June 2015

Q. I have a slate stamped, concrete driveway approximately 20 years old that is a faded orange colour. I would like to recolour it grey. What do you suggest?

A. Resene Concrete Stain would be the only product that we could offer; this is a semi-transparent stain so the final colour (two coats required) will depend upon how much of the original colouration remains.

June 2015

Q. I would like to paint my porch floor and concrete path running to the porch. The concrete path is in good condition. The wood porch floor has been painted in a waterbased Resene paint. Can I paint straight over both using Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path paint in a Grey Friars colour or do i have to prime the concrete or porch with something first?

A. Prime the bare concrete with Resene Sureseal and the existing acrylic paint with Resene Quick Dry Primer Undercoat. The topcoat with Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

May 2015

Q. I currently have a large concrete area which has been sealed. I want to paint over this area with a paving paint or concrete paint rather than a sealer as removing the sealer would be very hard and expensive. Is there a paint that can be applied directly over a standard concrete sealer? The area gets minimum foot traffic.

A. Apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and then apply two coats of Resene Walk-on or Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

May 2015

Q. I had an 130 square metre outdoor patio area tiled with what was supposed to be 'outdoor' tiles. They were very slippery when wet so we had a non slip surface wash applied which was a disaster. The surface now has what I can only describe as wash marks etched into it. The tiles are a cream colour. Is there a surface paint that I can apply or would I be creating another monster? The tiles have light domestic traffic.

A. Application of a clear layer may fix the patchiness but may well recreate a slippery finish. We cannot provide a slip resistant clear finish that does not show the slip additive. If a painted finish is acceptable, suggest a test patch using Resene ConcreteSeal 3in1 to confirm adhesion be done, leave for 24 hours and then check adhesion. If this is successful then you can apply two coats of either Resene Walk-on or Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path. Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path is a more textured (non slip) finish.

May 2015

Q. Are you able to make up any colour in your concrete paving paint range? How resilient is it able to be if the paving paint is going to be in a shaded area but in a public space subject to moderate amounts of traffic? Is there an additional clear coating that can be used to ensure that the colours are protected from the abrasion?

A. Depends upon the colour chosen, we don't have the same range of tint bases in the products to tint all Resene colours but can do most. The degree of colour fade is determined by the colour. We do not normally recommend clear coating over paving paints as this reduces the slip resistance of the coating.

March 2015

Q. What product does Resene do to paint over Resene Concrete Stain on a concrete terrace?

A. As long as the Resene Concrete Stain is dry and all solvents have left the applied film then you can use two coats of Resene Walk-on.

March 2015

Q. We want to repaint our drains at school as part of our Enviro awareness. The previous paint is wearing off - which is the best and longest wearing paint please?

A. I suggest Resene Lumbersider as it is waterborne and easily touched up. The option to convert to a 'longer lasting' paint will require application of two pack solventborne paints which is costly, especially if small areas require a colour, and it's not suitable for youngsters to apply.

Another option is to use Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path if the painted area will be in a high foot traffic area.

March 2015

Q. We have Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path inside and are wanting a clear seal on it to rejuvenate it a little.

A. We don't normally recommend a clear finish as this reduces the wet slip resistance. However if you do want a clear finish you could use Resene Concrete Clear (two coats).

March 2015

Q. What is the best paint to use on concrete steps on the outside of my house?

A. We recommend Resene Walk-on.

December 2014

Q. My front (concrete) steps are in disrepair. Please advise the best solutions for prepping and painting these heavy duty steps.

A. The best way would be to remove the existing paint system then prime with Resene Sureseal and finish with two coats of Resene Walk-on.

December 2014

Q. I need a paint to cover an outdoor ceramic tile terrace that is slippery when wet. Will your anti-slip paints adhere to ceramic tiles?

A. Ensure that the tiles are free of moss/mould and dirt etc. Then apply Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and leave to cure for 48 hours before undercoating with Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat then finish with two coats of Resene Walk-on or Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path. The system will take about five days to cure and ideally there should be no moisture on the newly painted surface for the first 48 hours.

November 2014

Q. We have a driveway with pressed coloured concrete. The surface has gone. Do you have any covering for the drive to protect it, and make it look glossy as it once was?

A. The only possible product we have for this application is Resene Concrete Clear.

November 2014

Q. I decided to paint a trim on my outside non slip matt tiles. I made the mistake of not priming first. Now some paint has peeled off and more is sure to come. Can I now prime them and repaint over them? Not sure if primer can go on a painted tile?

A. Our standard system for glazed tiles is to prime with Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer (note this is an adhesion primer and not designed to give film build or opacity), leave to cure for 48 hours. Then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry Waterborne Primer Undercoat and finish with two coats of a Resene waterborne enamel. Adhesion development will take a minimum of five days. The system can only be applied direct to the tile surface not over a painted surface so you would need to remove the existing paint first.

October 2014

Q. What should I use on a concrete patio of schist rock in mix (porous) to give a wet look?

A. If the patio requires sealing to prevent water ingress then we have no product that can deliver this requirement but if you want a clear to give a wet look apply multiple coats of Resene Concrete Clear Gloss.

October 2014

Q. Does Resene have a product to recoat a faded, coloured stamped driveway?

A. Yes, Resene Concrete Stain, available in a range of colours, which you can view on the Resene Decks, Driveways and Recreational Areas colour chart.

October 2014

Q. I would like to paint over outdoor ceramic glazed tiles that are fully exposed to rain. What can be done?

A. Our standard spec for glazed tiles is to clean down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash and then apply an adhesion coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer. Leave the Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to cure for a minimum of 48 hours then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of Resene Walk-on. The system will take up to 5 days to achieve sufficient cure to withstand foot traffic. The paint finish will not have the wear properties of the original tile finish.

September 2014

Q. I'm sure I browsed something on your website about a paint that covers asphalt. My question is, is this a clear coating or a paint finish? The issue is that I run a training facility and my students have splattered paint over the asphalt, thus, it looks rather unsightly.

A. We recommend Resene Blacktop to cover paint spills onto asphalt.

August 2014

Q. What paint should I use to repaint Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path in good condition on concrete? Also what to use to clean existing paint prior to painting?

A. Assuming the existing Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path is sound you can scrub down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash. Rinse clean and then recoat either with Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path again or Resene Walk-on. The latter will fill some of the Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path profile and reduce slip resistance but may make cleaning easier.

August 2014

Q. We have outdoor ceramic tiles (unglazed) that no longer match the colour of the house since we repainted. I was wondering if painting the tiles was an option and, if so, what you would recommend?

A. Apply a seal coat of Resene Sureseal then follow this with two coats of Resene Walk-on.

August 2014

Q. Could you please advise me of the best paint to use on bitumen speed bumps? I need to paint yellow and black stripes. The speed bumps are bitumen and would be a few years old. They are inside a gated complex, so no outside traffic. We have about 60 units so get a bit of traffic but not a lot.

A. Given the low level of trafficability you could use Resene Lumbersider for painting the lines, not as hardwearing for tyres as a dedicated road marking paint but can be easily touched up.

July 2014

Q. I'd like to repaint some concrete pavers I’ve been given. They are 50mm thick and very solid but the colour (throughout the paver) has faded. What’s the best product to use to recoat them? Also would it be better to repaint them singly before laying them, or lay them first and then paint them?

A. Resene Concrete Stain. To avoid water coming through the pavers you should install a waterproof layer before laying.

June 2014

Q. Can I paint brown over grey using concrete paint for concrete?

A. If you are referring to overcoating with Resene Concrete Stain, the answer is yes but due to the semi-transparent nature of the product the base colour will influence the final colour.

June 2014

Q. What paint should I use on the entrance to our front door? It is concrete steps up to a tongue and groove wooden floor, old and faded.

A. Scrub down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash, rinse clean and allow to dry. Sand back any flaking paint to a sound edge and sand remaining paint to provide a key for the new paint. Prime any bare concrete with Resene Sureseal and then apply two coats of Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path.

May 2014

Q. Can Resene Blacktop be applied to a near new concrete drive - there is a hairline crack approx 1mm wide needs covering?

A. Resene Blacktop has been formulated for application to a bituminous substrate. It has been used with varying degrees of success over a concrete substrate. In your case the concrete cracking and size of the cracks may be made worse by application of the coating as the black colour will attract more heat.

May 2014

Q. Can Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path be applied to a fibreglass type substrate?

A. Degrease the fibreglass and lightly sand taking care not to unduly scratch the surface then apply Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and then follow with two coats of Resene Non-Skid Deck and Path. The aggregate is a marble type of a selected size range and if the substrate is sufficiently hard to resist impact damage when the coating is pressed then the aggregate will have no effect.

February 2014

Q. I have an old printed concrete sloping driveway towards the house. Can I restain or paint over in something that's not slippery? I can acid wash the sealer/paint off and it looks like bare concrete underneath. I would like charcoal or something dark.

A. Suggest Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path. Remove the existing coating then you can acid etch. Ensure that when the acid is applied to the concrete that it bubbles and then wash down well with copious amounts of fresh water and allow to dry before priming with Resene Sureseal. Then apply two coats of Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path in your selected colour.

Q. I wish to paint an outside concrete area that has had a solvent sealer on it. Present colour is charcoal and I would like the finish colour medium brown. It is subject to foot traffic and the surface looks excellent when wet but when dry looks as if there is dirt/dust on it. What steps would I need from start to finish to achieve this?

A. We recommend moving to a solid paint finish such as Resene Non-Skid Deck and Path. If the existing sealer is based on an acrylic resin and sound then you should be able to apply two coats of the Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path over the cleaned surface.

Q. Is Resene Sonyx 101 the best paint for an existing high traffic area concrete surface?

A. Resene Sonyx 101 is formulated for application to non-traffic areas such as cladding and walls. For high traffic surfaces our best recommendation would be a two component finish such as Resene Uracyl 403 applied over a two pack epoxy basecoat.

Q. We've stripped the paint from the timber (tanalised pine) exterior stairs as it was flaking off. Can you please recommend a durable non-slip paint system to recoat it with?

A. We recommend Resene Non Skid Deck & Path. This is a tough durable non-skid coating which is also easy to recoat in the future when required.

Q. Can I use Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path on glazed light coloured outdoor tiles?

A. The challenge is to achieve adhesion of a paint system to glazed tiles. The tiles and grouting will need to be clean and free of mould/algae (treat with Resene Moss & Mould Killer if required). Apply Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and leave for at least 48 hours before applying the two coats of Resene Non-Skid Deck & Path. This is the best system we have for this application but we cannot guarantee that adhesion will be achieved. You will need to check if the tiles and grout have ever been treated with a silicone based sealer: if so then painting is not an option. may finishes here.
