Q. I am considering using your products for my house. Could you advise whether all the ingredients and materials for your paints are either obtained in New Zealand, or whether Resene subscribes to a modern slavery policy of some sort? A. Resene does follow policies on modern slavery as our raw ingredients come from overseas. We are in the process of scripting these, so I do not have any to attach for you to view but we do ensure we use ethical suppliers. Resene paints are manufactured in Wellington, New Zealand and is a family owned and run business. September 2023 |

Q. I have an old can of waterbased paint that has been unopened since I bought it. The paint colour and consistency seem fine. Is there any risk with using this paint in an interior application and if so, what is the risk? A. This should be fine to use especially since it was unopened. The first warning sign is a bad smell, like a rotting smell that is very strong and the consistency would be very thick and lumpy. August 2023 |

Q. What paint do I use to re-do gold lettering on a granite headstone? Also, do I use a sealer? A. We have used the following for the purpose you have requested. Ensure the lettering is clean from all contaminants then re-apply the colour using Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen (testpot) tinted to the correct basecoat for your metallic colour. Using a sharp blade, remove areas outside of the lettering. Followed by Resene FX Metallic (testpot) in your chosen colour. If the original lettering is in good condition you can just apply the Resene FX Metallic over the top. July 2023 |

Q. I have some old machinery (a lathe for example) I plan to repaint. It is rusty and still partially painted but I'm hoping/planning to bring it back to bare metal before repainting. It will be subject to quite a bit of wear and tear as well as oils and other things. What can you recommend for this application and are there budget friendly options too? A. The more time you put in the better the result will be. We have two options – one is a single pack option and the other a two pack option. For both options the steel needs to be fully stripped from any old coatings, rust free and clean. Option 1 - apply one coat of Resene ArmourX GP Metal Primer (wait 24 hours between coats in colder temps). Apply two coats over any areas if rust was an issue. Apply two coats of Resene Super Gloss in desired colour. This paint system is tough but not as tough as a 2 pack paint system. Option 2 - apply one coat of Resene Armourcote 221 (wait 24-48 hours before applying the topcoat). Apply two coats of Resene Uracryl 403 in your desired colour (wait 24-48 hours between coats). The longer you can wait to use the items for both paint systems the better. July 2023 |

Q. I have a client with a sheet metal container that is finished with an acrylic enamel (supplied by Mobil box) – can we use Resene Uracryl GraffitiShield on it? A. Yes, Resene GraffitiShield can be used to overcoat a waterborne enamel as an anti-graffiti coating. No undercoat is required over the waterborne enamel provided it is clean and the colour you want. Resene Uracryl GraffitiShield is a clear finish. If you are also looking to change the colour, I would recommend sanding to degloss the current paint surface and then applying Resene Uracryl 800 series, This is a pigmented anti-graffiti coating that we can tint to a large range of Resene colours. Q. Is there a way to tell how long ago a paint was applied? A. Determining the age of a paint system is very difficult, there are no machines to assist with this unfortunately. Paint in different conditions will age at a different rate, depending on the north or south sides of the house, near eaves or protected by fencing etc, near vegetation, how close you are to the sea, how often the home is washed and the colour. The interior will age slightly differently - U.V, moisture as well as the film thickness of the paint when applied has a lot of responsibility for durability and longevity, as well as primers and undercoats used which are responsible for adhesion. Unfortunately, there is no real way to determine how long a coating has been present for. July 2023 |

Q. I have found some ‘strings’ of paint about 5-7cm long that occasionally roll out onto the wall in my paint. I keep the lid on the bucket as much as I can but was wondering what could this be and how to I change my method to stop it from happening. I have read online having a spray bottle of water and occasionally spraying in the bucket may help any what I guess is some of clumping or skinning of the paint. A. Part cans are particularly vulnerable to ‘skinning’. All binders want to start curing on contact with oxygen in the air. When a part filled can is stored, the binder will react with the air in the void in the can and ‘skin’. Ironically the harder the skin the better, as it is easily removed and, more importantly, provides a good air barrier to the paint underneath. (Skinning is naturally more severe when dried paint in the rim of the can precludes the lid from fitting tightly.) A spray bottle to keep the paint wet is great, provided not too much water is added. Ultimately the best way is to keep the lid on and the air and sun out and off the wet paint and the bucket it is stored in. Heat and oxygen will start to 'dry’ your paint even in the container. Q. I'm looking for a low sheen paint/stain to spray direct onto a smooth finished timber crate that will not require an undercoat and will then be food safe once dried to allow for produce etc to sit inside. A. Acrylic paint sticks to itself, especially in warm conditions. This is why windows and doors etc are not painted in acrylic. Overcoating the crates with a coat of waterborne enamel such as Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss will stop this from happening. When painting any new uncoated crates going forward, a primer will be necessary as waterborne enamels are not self-priming like Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen is. We recommend priming with one coat of Resene Quick Dry followed by two topcoats of Resene Lustacryl in your desired colour. May 2023 |

Q. What waterproof paint can I use on corflute signboard? A. Ensure the corflute is degreased using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label directions, then apply a primer coat of Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat and finish with two coats of any Resene waterborne topcoat, chosen to meet the exposure environment/end use. Q. Can I paint a plastic buoy? I don’t know what the plastic is. I want to use it in my garden as a decoration. A. Without knowing the exact plastic-type, we would recommend doing a trial with the primer before committing to the whole project. Many kinds of plastic are unpaintable and the primer simply won’t stick long term. We recommend cleaning and sanding the surface, just a light scuff to abrade the surface. Then apply one thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer. Then leave this for three days to start its initial cure. Make sure you prevent water or rain from touching it during this time if possible. After the three days try to lightly scratch the surface. If stuck you can proceed with any exterior water-based topcoat, like Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss or Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen (this is also the paint used in our testpots, so you are welcome to use those too). If the sealer can be scratched and lifted after three days then unfortunately the plastic must be an unpaintable material. May 2023 |

Q. Can I apply dark wax over Resene Lustacryl paint? Or should I use matte or flat? A. A low sheen or flat finish is best to use, I'd recommend Resene SpaceCote: Resene SpaceCote Flat or Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. This is a better surface for the soft wax to adhere to. May 2023 |

Q. I want to paint a galvanised flu for a pellet fire. The flu exits the back of the fire, through the wall, and then up. It's the outside part I want to paint. The flu is double skinned but the lower parts still get too hot to touch. What's a suitable paint system for this? I'm having trouble finding info on paints that can stick to galvanising and also cope with heat. A. We may have a product that can be used, but it depends how hot the flu gets. It’s a flat finish black coating, the entire area needs to reach a temperature of 200 to 250 degrees Celsius and be held at this temp for at least 1 hour to cure. If the flu or parts of don’t reach this temp, this is not an option. If the flu or parts of it don’t get hot enough for the above product, but it is too hot to hold your hand to it continuously while in use then unfortunately we don’t have a suitable product. Q. Do you have a product that will remove graffiti from a concrete block wall? A. We have Resene Graffiti Cleaner which removes graffiti easily from non-porous surfaces and can be used to help remove graffiti from porous surfaces but the graffiti can get into small holes and gaps that be tricky to remove if there is no coating already on the concrete. Q. I need an acrylic paint retarder. What product do you have? A. Resene has Resene Hot Weather Additive that can be added to acrylic or waterborne enamels to slow the drying. March 2023 |

Q. Is it OK to use a pale low sheen waterbased topcoat under a waterbased high gloss enamel topcoat of a slightly different colour, when putting on two coats of paint, so you can see where you have painted, and where you haven’t, and to use up surplus paint of a slightly different shade? A. Yes this is fine to do. On the high gloss last coat be sure to not overspread the paint and be more meticulous with your application as any thin areas or missed patches will be noticeable. Q. We accidentally bought some Resene Sonyx 101 when we needed to buy some Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen. We were wondering if it's possible to use Resene Sonyx 101 as a first coat with the Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen as the topcoat. We're painting exterior stucco. A. Absolutely this can be used for as a first coat. Keep in mind that Resene ColorShop staff can make a colour greyer or darker if that may help you to use up the leftovers. March 2023 |

Q. Is there anything on the market that can turn acrylic paints into metallic? A. Resene does not have anything that can be added to turn acrylic into metallic. However, we do have a waterborne metallic range – Resene FX Metallic paints are available in a range of colours. March 2023 |

Q. I have a lightly damp masonry wall which has been painted with latex paint. I like to apply a lime or limewash paint over the existing paint. Which primer and topcoat product should I use? A. How damp is the wall, are you intending to repair where the moisture is getting in? How well has the latex paint adhered? We have two options that are popular for limewashing:

Q. I need to paint a 35L cast iron wine press and I’d like to use a food safe paint. There is minor rust present in the juice pan, however I’m in the process of sanding this back. There shouldn’t be any oil in the cast iron. I’m not 100% certain that it’s all cast iron: some parts maybe just plain steel. Can you recommend what to coat it with? There is existing paint on the wine press, but I have no idea what type/how old. It could be very old paint. I will be sanding it away. The sheen isn’t particularly important - low sheen is probably best, but I’d take your advice on that. A. Resene doesn’t have food grade certification on our products. That’s not to say they wouldn’t meet the grade it’s just not a field we have specialised our products in and put them through the regulated process for approval. If this is for commercial use and needs the approval food grade products, the team at Altex Coatings can help. Otherwise, if you don’t need a certified food grade option, I think the original coating was likely a single pot enamel and we can give you a like for like system. The benefit being, these are all single pot and easy maintenance if ever needed. Apply one coat of Resene Rust-Arrest, followed by one coat of Resene Enamel Undercoat and two coats of Resene Super Gloss in our desired colour. March 2023 |

Q. I am keen to understand why I cannot get my tint separate from my paint. This enables me to better tint my paint to match my requirements. A. We mostly do this for quality control, as we can't be sure that the tint will end up in Resene paint, in the correct sized can or in the correct product. The tint can dry when left out causing colour problems We can't control the colour outcome, which can cause mistints to come back to our stores. We do sell MPS stainers which are small bottles of colourant to tint undercoats and adjust colours for matching. February 2023 |

Q. I have recently had a house fire which sent smoke billowing through our bedroom. With the lampshade removed it looks like the smoke has stained the ceiling. The insurance company said that the colour difference is due to the lampshade and the effect the light directly has on the paint. Is there any way of telling whether the staining is due to the fire or simply the effect of the lampshade and lightbulb itself. A. There is no test that can be done to determine the cause of this stain. It is not uncommon for this to appear around light fittings that have been in place for some time. February 2023 |

Q. What paint would you recommend for wooden chopping board. It's sanded but I want to paint it black or dark grey. It must be tough and food grade paint. A. Resene does not have a paint system that we are able to give long-term assurance on, there is nothing we can offer that will have resistance to knife chopping. Perhaps a tinted resin-like liquid glass might work. February 2023 |

Q. Can 10 litres of Resene White that is already tinted be tinted to something else? A. Yes, usually this can be done. It can be tinted, but the existing colour will limit the colours you can choose from. A charge for tinting will apply. February 2023 |

Q. I've used about a third less paint than I would have expected when calculating litres of paint required per square metres. Does that mean my coverage is too light? Should I put a third coat on? A. Yes, sounds like you have applied a bit light. Once a third coat is applied you should see a true colour as well as have better film build for a more stable paint finish. January 2023 |

Q. Can I use Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel paint to paint a eating plate to put food on? A. Yes, if the coated surface is left to cure for at least two weeks then wiped down with warm water and mild detergent. However, the paint will not withstand washing in a dish washer or hot water/detergent. January 2023 |

Q. The previous owner has painted the glass roof of our conservatory. The paint is peeling off easily. Is there a painting system I can apply to successfully reduce heat and brightness on glass? A. My guess is that there was no sealer applied to the glass first and that the paint has been directly applied to the glass. Remove the entire existing coating. Thoroughly clean the glass surface. Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Sureseal sealer and allow it to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before overcoating. The sealer is not designed to be applied as a thick wet film thickness, the thinner the coat the better. Then apply two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen (if on the interior side of the glass) or Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen (if on the exterior side). The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks until a full cure occurs. In the early stages, the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion, as these features develop as the film undergoes curing. Note that the painting will not reproduce the original features or hardness properties of the original glass and adding any paint system will always require a level of maintenance. Please note that the Waterborne Sureseal is a coloured sealer and will not dry clear, if you plan to paint the exterior of the glass. January 2023 |

Q. Can I use a testpot to alter the colour of a pot of waterborne enamel semi-gloss? A. To mix paint to alter colours, the products need to be the same. The product in a testpot is Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen – an acrylic low sheen. Mixing with a waterborne enamel will cause a non-uniform dried finish as well as the products not performing as well as they should. December 2022 |

Q. What is the best way to paint a brand new vinyl head rest? A. If the vinyl is soft/malleable in any way, paint products will not adhere for very long as the flex acrylic paint has is less than soft vinyl. If the vinyl is hard and rigid, degrease and clean using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner. Apply one coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer. Leave for 24 hours to harden. Apply one coat of Resene Quick Dry primer undercoat, leave for 48 hours to harden. Apply two coats of your chosen topcoat – Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen or Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss are good options. Q. I need to seal old railway sleepers that have been creosote treated. When hot they leak. My research tells me they can be sealed effectively by penetrating epoxy resin. Have you any products that would seal sleepers? A. Unfortunately, Resene do not have a product to go over creosote treated timber currently. There are any chemicals that need to be encapsulated which a standard paint product wouldn’t be able to achieve. December 2022 |

Q. What paint can I use for a metal rat cage that has gone a little rusty? I think it is made of steel and the rust is orange/brown. A. We recommend priming with one coat of Resene Rust-Arrest, followed by two topcoats of Resene Lustacryl in your desired colour. Once painted please leave for five days, then wash down with warm soapy water, before returning the rat to their cage. November 2022 |

Q. We have bollards that have been installed using epoxy grout in a tar sealed area. So, the top of the epoxy grout around the bollard needs painting to match the tarseal and has a matte finish. They want to paint this with something that will adhere to the epoxy and can handle outside conditions. A. If this is a standard epoxy grout then our best recommendation would be priming the epoxy grout with Resene ConcreteSeal 3 in 1, then topcoating with Resene Blacktop (our driveway coating) as the best match we have. Keep in mind that Resene Blacktop may look different to the asphalt and will weather differently over time also. October 2022 |

Q. I painted this morning outside and it is bubbling in places. A. Using dark colours on a warm/hot day on an already warmed substrate can cause blisters to appear. When it gets cooler (at night/first thing in the morning) have a look to see if the blisters have receded. Sometimes they shrink back to the substrate and there are no further issues. If they do not shrink back, you will need to remove the poorly adhered coating and start that area again when its cooler. October 2022 |

Q. Can you use testpots to paint shoes? A. It has been done before. The outcome is usually good but not great – the flexing of the shoe upper does lead to the paint splitting along flex lines. If the shoes are more rigid without flex lines the paint finish will look better for longer. It is also critical to remove existing polish residues as these will interfere with adhesion. June 2022 |

Q. Are your paints in testpots multi-surface paints? Do they need a sealer/varnish over it? Do they need baking if using for art work e.g.. on canvas/ceramic/glass? A. Resene testpot paints are made using a conventional waterborne resin and are suitable for exterior and interior application to an appropriately prepared and primed substrate. The applied paint does not need baking to dry and doesn’t require a clear varnish. June 2022 |

Q. We have some graffiti painted on a rough concrete surface. We would like to use some paint stripper to remove it. Do you think this is a good option and feasible? Do you have a product that you would recommend? We would prefer not to paint over it as that will just provide an easy surface for them to hit again. A. Try Resene Graffiti Cleaner. June 2022 |

Q. I want to paint a ship container. It is currently faded green. Should I undercoat with some sort of metal primer ? A. Treat areas of moss/mould infestation with Resene Moss & Mould Killer diluted and used to label/data sheet instructions. For heavy infestations more applications may be needed. Scrub down using Resene Paint Prep and Housewash diluted and used to label instructions. Rinse clean or hose down with copious amounts of fresh water ensuring all wash solution and surface chalk residues are removed. All paint that is flaking or unsound must be removed by using mechanical methods, (3M Rust and Paint Removal Disc), chemical stripper or high pressure water-blasting taking care not to damage either the substrate or the surrounding areas. Remove all areas of white corrosion material and as much red rust as is practicable and all paint that is flaking or unsound must be removed by using mechanical methods e.g. 3M Rust and Paint Removal Disc, to leave only soundly adherent corrosion products taking care not to damage either the substrate or the surrounding areas. Spot prime prepared areas of corrosion with Resene ArmourZinc 110 and then apply a full coat of Resene Pre-coated Steel Primer and finish with two coats of the Resene Summit Roof CoolColour version of the topcoat colour. The CoolColour version of a colour will reflect more heat compared to the same colour made using non-cool pigmentation. The CoolColour system will reduce but not eliminate heat related stress on the substrate. June 2022 |

Q. I’m looking for a waterborne sealer for concrete. I’m unable to access the outside of a concrete wall, so need a product that can be applied to the inside to stop water penetration from the outside. A. Resene HydraBlock is the only product we have for this application. June 2022 |

Q. Can you tell me whether the LRVs of Resene paints is based on a gloss finish? I am trying to take a Resene colour LRV and then determine what the LRV might approx reduce to if it were a matt paint and then if it were a matt paint applied to a textured surface (eg stucco plaster). A. LRV is a measurement of reflectance of visible light, colour only. The LRV does not change with the gloss level. June 2022 |

Q. What is the reason I am getting lots of tiny bubbles in the paint as I roller coat. The temperature is about 17 degrees and it is dry. The equipment is dry and it is a brand new tin of paint. A. Air entrainment can result if the paint is over rolled, if the open time of the paint is short then the air bubbles will burst but there will be no flow and levelling to allow for a uniform film to form. Q. Can you please advise if Resene Aquapel can be used to the top of side of existing concrete slabs and/or the inside face of existing low height concrete retaining walls to waterproof/stop moisture coming through to the top/onside face? A. Our Resene Aquapel treatments will only render the substrate water repellent, not waterproof. Re retaining walls, if back filled there should have been a waterproof barrier applied, usually a bitumen-based product, before the concrete was back filled. We do have Resene HydraBlock which is a water based two pack epoxy hydrostatic barrier that can be applied to the exposed face. The coating will need topcoating with a pigmented system to give protection against UV. However application must wait until summer when the moisture content of the substrate should be at its lowest level. If the hydrostatic pressure exceeds the barrier adhesion then break through can still occur. June 2022 |

Q. How long will an opened tin of paint last? Also what about an unopened tin how long will that last? A. There is no set use by dates. For an opened can of solventborne paint as long as the can is sealed and stored in a cool well-ventilated area the time is long, when reopened there may well be a skin which should be carefully removed before re mixing to a uniform consistency. For a waterborne paint the same applies, however waterborne paint can undergo bacterial contamination, which is detected by an off odour to the can contents. We do add in can preservative but once this is consumed bacterial growth can occur. Bacteria can be introduced to the point from the environment or from application tools. Unopened paint, stored under cool well ventilated conditions can be stored for many years, once opened it will require stirring until homogenous. It may still develop bacteria over time and skinning. Q. I am hoping you can help me with some Pantone colour matching? We need this to match our new branding and get half and quarter strengths. A. Resene does have some matches to Pantone colours, however, we do tend to catch to the ‘c’ (coated) versions rather than the ‘u’ (uncoated) versions. Q. I want to spray from testpot to touch up a solventborne finish. Can a Resene testpot be successfully thinned for air spraying with any of water, alcohol, iso propanol, acetone/MEK, acrylic spraying thinner or another? What mixing ratio of solvent is possible? A. Resene testpots contain Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen. This can be thinned up to 10% with either water or Resene Hot Weather Additive. We do not guarantee full adhesion to a solvent borne finish, without a thorough de-glossing of the current solvent coating. February 2022 |

Q. We have a concrete rehabilitation project where part of a pumpstation is wet/submerged when the screws are in operation. If we find cracks too small to repair with injection systems (<0.3mm) the client wants to paint them with a bridging paint. What would be best for this? A. We have no standard waterborne paint solution for areas that are submerged. The only suggestion would be to use a bitumen tanking product such as Resene Water Lockout or replaster. October 2021 |

Q. We have some structural steel to coat to IZS1. Does Resene Armourzinc 125 meet the requirements of IZS 1? A. Sorry but no, we would recommend Resene Zincilate 11. Resene Armourzinc 125 does not have the zinc content to meet the AS 2312 IZS1 specification requirements, but when overcoated forms the base of a durable paint system for steel. September 2021 |

Q. What do I use to back paint glass? A. We sell Resene Imperite I.F. 503 for painting splashbacks. The paint is spray applied and the base colour is then over coated with either a coat of grey or black using the same product. Standard glass is not used for splashbacks. You need low iron heat tempered glass, as the green tone in standard glass changes the colour when viewed from the front. August 2021 |

Q. I have some Resene Lustacryl waterborne enamel based paint with anti-mould added in. Can I mix this with white latex paint? A. Resene Lustacryl is based on a self-cross linking resin system and can only be mixed with paints formulated on the same resins system. August 2021 |

Q. Can you confirm the operational temperature range for Resene Uracryl 402? A. Dry surface temperatures less than 100°C. August 2021 |

Q. How long should we leave laying carpet after painting skirtings? A. We are not aware of any restrictions on painting after installing carpet. Definitely painting skirtings then carpet installation will inevitably see damage to the skirting paint. August 2021 |

Q. I've had a painter come in who works for a local building company who has admitted to adding food essence to his enamels to lessen the smells. I would be interested to hear if anyone else has heard of anyone else doing this. A. Addition of a fragrance to mask paint odour is common in Asian markets but usually only for waterborne paints. As long as the ‘fragrance’ is compatible with the solventborne enamel there may be no technical reason why it can’t be added. The masking of odours can be a trap as this may see a reduction of ventilation and can lead to a higher exposure level to released solvents as the brain may think, nice smell no danger. Q. I've been searching high and low for this, with no luck! I'm after a heat-resistant black paint that can be applied to timber (plywood in particular), to shield some heat coming from a gas stove (nothing too serious, but it's more to give the wood a bit more longevity). Even if it's a sort of heavy duty coating to protect against oil/cooking splatter - similar to a splashback. You can maintain hand contact on the timber when the gas stove is at full heat. A. Q. I was wondering if you have the ability to analyse a chip and advise what paint finish has been applied to a product? E.g. Q. Is it possible to get a paint colour mixed at one of your stores based on a HEX colour code? A. If you can print out the Hex colour and bring the printout to your Resene ColorShop they can usually create a colour match or arrange for our Colour Lab to, or they could show you similar Resene colours. You can use the free Resene Find-A-Colour tool on our website and it will show you close Resene colours. Type your hex value into the HEX box and select the Search button. This will show you similar Resene colours to your colour. You can view A4 swatches of the colours at your Resene ColorShop to see which would suit you best. Q. How to paint carbon fibre? A. Carbon fibre can be painted like any other substrate, the key is to give it a good clean first to remove any release agents. Wash it with a water soluble cleaner/detergent, dry thoroughly then use a solvent degreaser. Dry thoroughly then give it a good sand, grit depending on whether topcoating straight over of priming first. Bearing in mind carbon fibre is full of minute pinholes which will show through the paint. In the past we have clear coated with Durepox then sanded and re-cleared to eliminate the pinholes, with the carbon fibre effect showing through. Q. How do I determine what paint is on my living room walls? I would like to paint them again. Unfortunately there aren't any old tins lying around. A. The existing wall paint could be a conventional waterborne paint, a waterborne enamel or a solventborne enamel. Wet a cloth with methylated spirits and quickly transfer to the painted surface and rub, if the paint softens or dissolves then it is more than likely a conventional waterborne paint. If not, then it is a waterborne enamel or solventborne enamel. I would be surprised if the existing wall paint is not a conventional waterborne paint. If it is, clean down using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner and then apply two coats of a waterborne wall paint such as Resene Zylone Sheen or Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. If the meths tests indicates that the existing paint is not a conventional waterborne paint then sand the surface after cleaning to profile for recoating, dust off and apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry then finish with two coats of either of Resene Zylone Sheen or Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. Q. We have some steel anchor bars that are galv and epoxy coated with some damage to them. To repair, we have been recommended Resene Armour Zinc 120. Our designers are wanting to know if this has the same durability characteristics as our galv + 200 micron epoxy coating. A. The Resene ArmourZinc 120 applied at 75 microns dry film thickness is the zinc rich respire pint for damaged galvanising. The product can be overcoated with high build epoxies. Q. What would you paint the inside of a domestic water tank with? Probably a bit tricky given the fact there is drinking water involved. A. We have no lining for the interior of a concrete tank to address leaking. Carboline do have epoxy linings for tanks used for the collection of potable water but these are specialised systems and not suitable for use by DIYers. Most domestic water tanks have small openings which makes access to the inside difficult and if the lining is solventborne there is a safety issue. September 2020 |

Q. Would you make a recommendation for a primer for small 3D printed items? It must have a positive cure, be brushable and very easy to sand. The final coat will be an automotive spray can type. The 3D printer plastic is PLA. A. Paints can fall into various categories based on their solvent. The most common ones are oils, enamels, lacquers and acrylics, most of which will work well with both ABS and PLA. As you’re new to this, you’d be wise to stick to acrylic paints since they dry fast and can be cleaned with water. You can use any Resene waterborne paints including Resene testpot paints. Q. I have just finished painting two rooms inside and realised that the paint guy made up my paint in your Resene Sonyx 101 outdoor paint. Do I need to be concerned? A. Use of a semi-gloss paint for interior rooms is not common, Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen or Resene Zylone Sheen is our common wall paint option for non-wet areas. When used inside, Resene Sonyx 101 will not be as tough as other Resene semi-gloss options such as Resene Lustacryl, but apart from film toughness there should be no issues, as long as it is not used for painting bathrooms or ensuites. Q. If I undercoat both new wood and MDF with acrylic, can I use a spray can to paint the topcoats? A. If you allow the Resene Quick Dry to cure for at least two days there is a better chance of being able to apply a spray can colour. The issue with spray cans is the solvents used as propellants. Q. I have a scenario where I am welding a new section of steel CHS post to an existing steel CHS post. The location is exposed but not rain washed (it is under a canopy/awning). The new section of CHS steel post will be hot dip galvanised but the weld to the existing post needs to be completed on site. Can you please give me recommendations for a procedure applied after the weld has been completed to achieve protection from corrosion? A. For site repairs to damaged or welded areas; Water blast at 3000psi remove all salts, loose or flaking coatings, dirt, dust and any other contaminants. Allow the surface to dry. Any welded sections will need special attention. After welding, all surfaces to be painted must be thoroughly cleaned and free from flux, weld spatter and surface defects including cracks and deep pits. Weld spatter must be removed carefully by mechanical grinding. There should be no areas of rough welding (Removal of such defects may affect weld certification.) Weld flux must be removed by thorough washing with a detergent solution followed by copious washing with fresh water. To any weld and bare steel areas, power tool clean the area to a white metal finish as per SSPC-SP11-87T Standard. Care must be taken not to damage the sound coated surrounding areas. All paint edges must be feathered to a smooth finish and the sound paint coating slightly roughened to assist in adhesion of the newly applied coating system. The contractor shall ensure that there is no deterioration in the condition of the surfaces to be painted between the actual preparation and the application of the priming paint. Any extraneous matter deposited before painting shall be completely removed and the surface restored to its prepared finish state. Spot prime all bare prepared steel areas only with Resene ArmourZinc 120 to achieve a dry film thickness of 75 microns. Ensure an overlap of 10mm onto sound existing painted surface. Then apply the specified epoxy/urethane over coat system. June 2020 |

Q. I am having problems with my painting. I am using Resene undercoat, and I have two cans of white semi-gloss waterborne enamel. All three bubble when put on and leave brush or roller streaks when dry. I have changed my stroke technique several times. I tried a fluffy roller first, a foam roller, then a brush. A. We recommend rolling using a Resene No 1 sleeve this is an 8mm nap Dacron sleeve. There is always a degree of orange peel when rolling. Q. I love your paints but I do have trouble opening the tins, other than when I am opening them for the first time. I use a screwdriver (not a large one but the biggest I have) to lever the lid up but find the lid buckles, even though I am circling round the lid. Am I sealing them in the wrong way when I stop painting - perhaps a gentle tap with the hammer all around the rim is not okay? Or is there something else I should use to reopen the tin? A. Using a screw driver to open a can often does not allow for opening without damaging the lid. You can purchase paint can openers from Resene, these reduce the chance of lid damage. Q. I have been using pots of paint but have found that they have started to get thick. A. Once the air gets into the pot the paint will start to thicken. The more paint you use, and the less paint in the pot, the more prone the paint is to thickening because there is more and more air vs the amount of paint. You could try laying a piece of cling wrap or similar onto the surface of the paint to prevent the contact with the air in the pot. Then put the lid on as normal. Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, pay particular attention to hand contact areas. Then there are two options, sand to degloss then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry primer undercoat or apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before overcoating. Q. Why does the oil-based paint form a skin when it sits in the container for more than a few hours and how do I stop this happening please? A. Skinning in alkyd based paints is a common feature of storage of a partly used can but can also occur in a newly opened can. Alkyd based paints dry by reaction with air (oxygen) so at the top of a can or during hot conditions some of the solvent can evaporate and thus leads to the state of cure as air is also present. For storage this can be reduced by storing the can inverted ensuing the lid is firmly attached. During use regular string and addition of a small amount of thinner usually turps can delay the process and help re incorporate the partly cured skin. The success of the latter is related to how far the curing of the paint skin has occurred. Try to keep the paint cool and out of direct sunlight. February 2020 |

Q. I have painted timber with two coats of exterior acrylic paint. Some days later dry boards stick to each other. Why do painted things stick to each other? How can I fix this? A. If two surfaces painted with a conventional waterborne paint come together under pressure they will stick. This is known as block resistance, Cross linked waterborne paints such as Resene waterborne enamels have block resistance and once cured for a time boards can be stacked without sticking. Q. I have some quite old alkyd undercoat which has thickened slightly. Can I dilute this slightly and with what – turpentine? A. The thickening is due to in can part curing of the paint, common with alkyds and there is often a skin develop on the top of the paint. Stir to achieve a uniform mix and then judiciously thin with turps to achieve a brushable consistency. Take care not to over-thin as this will reduce the paint thickness and may also see runs and sags appear. January 2020 |

The standard recommendation is to thin only to achieve good atomisation, the amount of thinning will vary with the spray equipment being used. Q. For internal paint, how long can it be stored and used for touch ups before new paint should be purchased? A. There is no real storage limitation for a solventborne paint although part cans of alkyd enamels can develop a surface skin. Waterborne paints however are a different issue, Waterborne paints can develop bacterial contamination (recognisable by paint odour) during storage, the potential for bacterial contamination is dependent upon storage conditions with cool well ventilated storage being the ideal. We add some biocide to paint to control growth of microorganisms, however once this has been consumed then bio growth can develop. When opened cans are then sealed and stored there is an increased chance of bio degradation occurring as the paint is open to atmosphere and possible contamination from application tools. Q. How can I tell the type of paint in a container, which has no label? A. It’s not easy but you can differentiate between a waterborne and a solventborne coating by taking a portion of the paint and adding a small quantity of water and mixing it. Q. Can you tell me how the colour is affected if the incorrect base tone is used? For example if a colour is meant to have a light tone base but it is mixed using a mid-tone base. How does it affect the colour? A. There are two main issues – the colour will not match the colour standard and the durability may be compromised if colour levels in the tinted colour exceed allowable levels. December 2019 |
Q. We have a colour that we think looks different to the colour chart. How can we be sure they are the same? A. Our testpots and colour charts are matched to the same colour standards and our Colour Lab team use very precise measures to make sure they match. Our colour charts are made using the same paint that you would use on your walls. However if you are using a much higher gloss paint, the higher gloss level can make it seem cleaner and brighter, and a lower gloss level can make it seem darker. Also sometimes more of a colour or the other things in a home and the lighting can reflect onto the colour and change how you see it. If the colour is very different to the testpot/colour chart, it may be that it has been mistinted, which means the wrong quantities of tinter may have been put into the can. The paint could be brought back to the shop you purchased it from for them to check to see if it is a good match to the chart or whether there was an issue with the tinting. December 2019 |
Q. How important is the quality of the painter or wallpaperer to the finish? A. When it comes to painters and wallpaperers, you tend to get what you pay for. Professionals usually achieve a better quality job, with less hassle and disruption for you, using better quality materials. All of this adds up to a better finish, less stress to free you up to focus on other things. If you think it’s expensive hiring a good painter, try hiring a bad one. Q. Do you make testpots in gloss finishes? A. Most of our testpots are in a low sheen finish as that is the most popular finish for most projects inside and out. Q. What is the difference between ceiling paint and wall paint? I have some touch ups to do but seem to have only the ceiling paint in the cupboard. A. Ceiling paints are formulated at a near flat gloss level and do not contain a high resin content, this means that these paints have very poor burnish resistance and some may be removed by wiping. Wall paints are generally formulated at a higher gloss level and on a different resin system. The selection of resin and the higher gloss level does give the paint film better resistance to cleaning. Q. Can I use Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel over sound, oil based enamel? A. Yes you can; however all old enamels need to be thoroughly sanded to a uniform dull finish, prior to applying the new coating (so the new coating adheres to the old). It's often difficult to achieve this completely so is a good idea to use a primer first prior to the Resene Lustacryl. Resene Quick Dry primer would be best. Q. Can I add coloured paint e.g. a Resene testpot of Resene Lumbersider to Resene Aquaclear to colour it? I know there are Resene Colorwood stains that you can apply under Resene Aquaclear and colour enhancers that you can add to Resene Aquaclear but these will not work in my situation. I want a slightly more 'solid' look without a complete paint finish look. A. There is a good chance this will be okay but we have never tried this combination. Q. How long is paint good for if stored correctly? i.e. Can we keep it for a number of years for when kids put holes in the wall etc? And, if we have two half buckets, will it damage the liquid if we were to pour it into one? A. The storage of waterborne paint requires cool well-ventilated conditions to reduce the chance of bacterial contamination. Once paint is opened and used the risk of bacterial contamination of the paint increases dramatically. The paint smell is the easiest way to check for bacterial contamination. If a careful sniff of the can gives an odour response similar to smelly sports socks then there will be bacterial contamination. As long as the paints and colours are the same you can mix them. In fact storage in a full can is better than part cans as there is less air present. June 2019 |

Q. I have some unopened Resene Lumbersider paint, 18 years old, stored for painting a rental property. It's time to finally paint it so will the paint be okay? A. Not a common situation I must say. The paint technology that we were using when the paint was originally made has now been upgraded to achieve improved exterior durability. Suggest that you take the pail to a Resene ColorShop and ask them to put the pail on the store shaker. Open the can and if it is homogeneous and contains no bits, or if the paint smells off (unwashed sports socks odour) then the paint would not be suitable for use. May 2019 |
Q. I have some Resene Moss & Mould product. I've had it in my shed for the past few weeks which gets very hot. The container has swollen a little, is the product still ok to use? A. The active agent in the product is sodium hypochlorite; the container swelling is a sign of the active undergoing heat induced breakdown, which will lead to a reduction in efficacy. You will need to carefully release the pressure in the container, suggest that when it cools a little that you wrap the container in a towel or blanket (make sure either are disposal as they will more than likely be affected by the residual bleach component. Make sure that you wear eye protection and protective clothing and gloves and using a hammer and nail punch a hole in the screw cap to relieve the pressure. There will remain residual bleach activity but we cannot say how much. March 2019 |

Q. I require a black tinter to add to creosote. A. Creosote should penetrate into the timber substrate, if you add bulk colorant this will not be absorbed to any extent and has the potential to remain on the surface and weather away relatively quickly, so the original blackness intensity may disappear relatively quickly, especially on the northern elevation. Q. Do Alkyd Wallboard Sealer/SpaceCote K&B/Lustacryl K&B or Lusta-Glo have either Methylisothiazolinone or any other chemical ending with isothiazolinone in them. I am highly allergic to these. A. Solvent based products do not contain MIT but all the water based products do. There are many household products and shampoos that contain the same biocides. Q. My shower step and associated door frame needs repainting. My thoughts were to use paint stripper to strip off old paint on the step (this is chipped and not in a good state), then sand that and the door frame. Is this the best approach, and what paints should we use? Quick drying between coats would be good if possible as the house is tenanted and we don't want the shower out of order for too long. A. After stripping the existing paint system, thoroughly sand the bare timber dust off and apply a liberal coat of Resene Quick Dry then finish with two coats of Resene Lustacryl Kitchen & Bathroom (the system will not give wet slip resistance). Q. I have water penetration in my house. I have dug out the earth in the area and the old seal paint has dried and flaked off. As long as the paint system is not below ground level and water will not pond on the coated surface, you could use Resene X-200 (three coats) system applied over Resene Sureseal sealer. Q. My friend and I are doing a project for school and we are going to collect plastic bottles and turn them into more useful things to help the environment. We were wondering if you have any paint we can use to decorate our plastic bottles, to make them look more appealing, it would be good if the paint was waterproof so it can last in outdoor areas. A. Your project sounds very interesting. The adhesion of a waterborne paint depends upon the plastic you are looking to coat. I suggest that as a starting point, that you get a Resene testpot and apply it to the plastic bottles you have, to check adhesion. Apply the paint and then check adhesion after 4-5 days. Q. We have a client who has allergies to preservatives: Methylchloroisothiazolinone and Methylisothiazolinone and apparently this can be in water based paints. Could you let me know if it's in your paints or if there are certain interior paints that it isn't in? A. Methylisothiazolinone and methylchloroisothiazolinone. Methylisothiazolinone (MIT or MI) and Methylchloroisothiazolinone (CMIT or CMI) are two preservatives from the family of substances called isothiazolinones, used in some cosmetic products and many other household products and is a common preservative in waterborne paints, from most waterborne paint suppliers. The MIT level in our paints is very low but is present and does have the potential to trigger an allergic reaction to a presensitised individual. However, we are working on MIT free from the point of view that we won’t add MIT. However, all our resins currently used employ MIT as the preservative so a totally MIT free system is still a work in progress. The MIT allergy issue is associated with skin contact of wet paint, once the paint film has dried the residual MIT is locked into the paint film and in essence, neutralised. So if an allergy sufferer wants to use the paint, the best protection is to wear gloves and protective clothing to avoid skin contact. November 2018

Q. I have been using your paints for 40 years and love the quality. I find I am not getting the coverage with waterborne enamels that I used to get with oil based enamels. Am I by any chance doing something wrong as I have tried and tried and cannot get the coverage? A. If a waterborne paint is applied at the correct wet film thickness, two coats is enough to achieve coverage for most colours. The issue we see is that it is very easy to apply waterborne paint at greater spreading rates and this then can result in a dry film thickness, which gives lower hiding. The choice of brush and more importantly roller sleeve also impacts upon coverage and therefore opacity. The only better feature of a paint film that traditional solventborne enamel offers compared to waterborne enamel is hardness. Only a gloss solventborne enamel can be used for exterior painting and in the main these undergo early chalking. November 2018

Q. I am having trouble getting a smooth finish with Resene Lustacryl. It dries so fast when I’m painting the trim outside and I am trying not to over brush. By the time I get more paint on my brush, there is already a sticky film and it looks patchy. I have tried the Resene Hot Weather Additive but are there any tips you can give me please? I may be applying thinly, as I don’t want runs. A. We recommend addition of Resene Brushing Additive. Apply a liberal wet film and lay off. Do not overwork the wet paint as the wet paint sets up quickly and once this has occurred, you will create a disturbed film. November 2018

Q. I would like to paint a stainless steel board, could you please tell me what is the primer undercoat and the process? A. Stainless steel does not readily corrode, rust or stain with water as ordinary steel does. However, it is not fully stain-proof in low-oxygen, high-salinity, poor air-circulation or industrial contamination environments. There are various grades and surface finishes of stainless steel to suit the environment the alloy must endure. Stainless steel is used where both the properties of steel and corrosion resistance are required. There are over 150 grades of stainless steel, of which 15 are most commonly used. There are a number of systems for grading stainless steel. The most commonly used grades are 304 and 316. 304 Stainless is a Cr-Ni general purpose stainless steel. Grade 316 is the standard molybdenum-bearing grade, second in importance to 304 the molybdenum gives 316 better overall corrosion resistant properties than Grade 304, particularly higher resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments. Where long term corrosion resistance is the prime requirement stainless steel is best left unpainted. If damage to the protective oxide layer occurs stainless steel can show tea staining. Tea staining can be described as: discolouration of the surface of stainless steel that does not affect the structural integrity or the longevity of the material. Visually it is a discolouration of the metal surface, which tends to follow the ‘grain’ of any surface finish. Although unpleasant to look at, it is not a serious form of corrosion. Aesthetically it is unacceptable so the following information is designed to help you understand its causes and institute a maintenance plan to keep your stainless steel looking better for longer. Tea staining of stainless steels occurs most commonly in coastal areas and becomes progressively worse the closer you get to water (note that most of New Zealand is considered a coastal area). Other factors such as pollution, higher temperatures, surface finish, (the smoother the better and more highly polished) and humidity can also increase the tea staining effect. Q. I was told that some of the ‘commercial’ paints have a higher percentage of ‘solids’. The painter said the one he uses is approx 60% solids and some of the others are only around 30%. I don’t know if he’s pulling my leg or not. I got the impression he just preferred to use what he was used to, rather than go the extra mile and use what I wanted him to use. A. Paints are formulated at a range of volume solids, there is a difference between weight and volume solids and many companies give the weight solids as the numbers are often higher. Solids is not a measure of ‘quality’ as quality is determined by the formulation components and not solids, as high solids paints can be formulated using low quality raw materials.

Q. I accidentally used a brush that had some turpentine on it (from cleaning it) with Resene SpaceCote. Will that affect the Resene SpaceCote badly? The brush had been brushed out on newspaper and left to dry for a few hours, but was definitely still wet with turps. I was loading it up with the Resene SpaceCote very heavily right from the start, and it seemed to paint very well and looks ok. Will there be any bad problems over time? A. Q. Are water based enamels as long lasting and hard wearing as oil based enamel paint? A. Depends upon what aspect of durability you are referring to and if the paint is exterior or interior. The time to chalking of an exterior waterborne paint is significantly longer than an enamel paint of the same gloss level. This is not an issue with interior paints. There is a scale of wear resistance; conventional waterborne paint has the lower wear resistance compared to waterborne enamel with solventborne enamel being the most resistant to wear/abrasion. Clean down an area to be grease/chalk free then wet a cloth of contrasting colour with meths and quickly transfer it to the painted surface and rub. Q. I am looking to print on glass then applying a backing paint. I’m told you have a special paint that is called Resene Imperite. A. Resene Imperite IF 503 is supplied to the splashback painting businesses. In the past we have looked at the area you are seeking a system for and found that unless the printing inks are totally resistant to solvents, that ink bleed occurs as the Resene product is a solventborne paint. Q. Please can you tell me how sheen level affects LRV and also is it true that the higher the sheen the darker the perception of the colour? This seems to be the accepted answer, but to me a colour generally seems brighter if the sheen level is higher. A. Resene testpots are made with a low sheen waterborne paint, there is an impact of gloss level on perceived colour. The same colour made using a flat waterborne paint formulation looks greyer and milkier than the same colour made using a gloss waterborne paint. Higher gloss level paints of the same type in the same colour are cleaner and brighter than the same colour made in a lowest gloss level finish. Gloss has no appreciable effect on how much light a colour reflects or absorbs otherwise known as LRV. August 2018 |

Q. I have dark stained Mahogany Rubberwood and want to blond it or lighten it. Any ideas for what products to use please? A. Without sanding off the stain colour the only other option would be to try Resene Colorwood Whitewash. Degrease first (not sure if you have used silicone based polishes, if so the residues of these are very difficult to remove), sand the surface to profile then apply the Resene Colorwood Whitewash. It is essential to get an even wet film thickness and to avoid overlapping when applying as the product is a lightly pigmented clear. Q. What is the difference between the Resene X-200 D62 acrylic weathertight membrane and the Resene X-300E D64 high build elastomeric membrane? A. In the CCANZ CP 01 2014 document there are two options to achieve a weathertight finish over exterior masonry. The first is a conventional high build acrylic paint system, the second is an elastomeric paint system both applied to achieve a minimum dry film thickness of 180 microns. Resene X-200 is the first type and Resene X-300E is the second type. Some believe that an elastomeric paint is the better option, Resene does not subscribe to this. An elastomeric paint system is really only for appropriate to use the situation where there is existing live cracking in a cementitious substrate. The elastomeric paint needs to be applied at 2x the maximum crack width to maintain film integrity when there is crack width changes. August 2018

Q. I would like to know the shelf life of Resene Lumbersider paint please. By the 'shelf life'. I want to know how long I can keep the paint from when I bought it and it will still be OK to use (stored in good conditions). A. Not a simple question to answer, if unopened and stored under cool interior conditions but off a concrete floor then at least 5 years. At the end of this time the paint will need to be stirred with a flat stirrer to reincorporate any settled components. Waterborne paint is prone to bacterial contamination, at manufacture we add an in can preservative to counter this but the preservative can be challenged and used up over time. If the can has been opened for use then the act of opening and use, dipping brushes into etc this can introduce bacteria into the paint can which depending upon the level type of bacterial introduction and this has the potential to see a rapid decline in then in can preservative level to a paint where protection no longer exists. The nose test will give an indication of bacterial contamination, if the wet paint has an odour similar to unwashed sports socks then this is the odour signal of bacterial contamination. It is best practice to only purchase the quantity of paint required for a project and use most if not all. June 2018

Q. We accidentally scratched the wall when moving furniture and the scratch is quite deep. Could you please advise how we can fix it? And also, what is the best possible way to match the paint colour? A. Use plasterboard stopping compound for filling/repairs and sand flush with the existing wallboard when fully dry. Seal off the repairs with Resene Broadwall Waterborne Wallboard Sealer then apply two coats of the topcoat colour. Re the topcoat match, there are two elements to this; one is to match the existing colour but also the existing gloss level. In this situation unless you can find the original can of paint, the only way may be to recoat an entire wall or room to achieve a consistent colour. May 2018

Q. I’m a painter and I’m wondering why I seem to have to strain some, as there are bits and pieces through the pail. The paint is new! A. Plastic pails can develop a skin and we agree that this is an annoying feature for an end user. Skin development occurs as a result of storage at elevated temperatures and has been more of an issue this summer. It can happen if paint is left in a hot vehicle or similar. Resene formulates our paints at higher solids content than other paint providers (paint thickness is not an indication of solids content, only the amount of thickener added) and this exacerbates the skinning potential. The issue rarely occurs over the cooler months. The skin can be removed when the pail is first opened but if the skin is broken up, filtering is recommended. March 2018

Q. I have some Resene Deep Purple stain. I want to apply it to a skateboard that I have now sanded down. Unfortunately, it already had a green stain applied to it. How would I go about re-staining it to be purple instead of green? Can I just apply a few layers of Resene Deep Purple right over top of the green staining? Or is there something else I should do? A. Stains are semi-transparent and this will always change the colour if another stain of a very different colour shade is applied over an existing stain colour. Q. I have an enamel bucket, which is starting to rust. I do have some paint which I purchased to repaint a children's metal climbing frame, which was starting to rust and am thinking that should be suitable for the bucket after I have given it a thorough clean and sand. Then maybe oil based enamel paint on top of that. A. We suggest the following: sand rusted areas to remove all lose rust, dust off then spot prime the prepared area with Resene Rust-Arrest. When the primer is dry, apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to the sound enamel areas and leave to dry for 48 hours, and then apply two coats of Resene Lustacryl. Q. We have some black steel skirting and angles on the same project. Vertical surfaces are ok but horizontal surfaces could do with some protection. The area is very small and the client accepts it may need cleaning down and recoating every few years. What would you recommend as a clear finish? We acknowledge the steel will rust and it will be difficult to get a good bond. A. Ensure the steel is cleaned to remove grease/oil etc. then apply three coats of Resene Imperite IF 502 Clear. Q. Can you please let me know the LRV rating of Resene Tapa with the additive ‘CoolColour’? I can find the rating for Resene Tapa on its own on your website, but not with the additive. A. LRV is a measure of light reflectance only and given this there is no LRV difference between the non-cool and CoolColour™ version of a colour. What does differ is the TSR (Total Solar Reflectance) of the CoolColour version, the TSR of the CoolColour version is higher than the non-cool version. TSR is a measure of heat reflection and does not have a visible reflection of light component. The CoolColour benefit is relative to the same colour made using non cool technology and does not render the surface cool to touch. January 2018

Q. I am looking for a paint to go on frosted wire reinforced glass to reduce sun glare/strike. The application is to a commercial building - factory windows that face North West. I would prefer the exterior to be painted but it can be interior as an option. I would prefer not to completely block out the sun for general natural light in the area. A. Sorry we do not have a frosted clear coating for this application. For an opaque option apply an adhesion coat of Resene ConcreteSeal 3 in 1 and then two coats of any Resene exterior waterborne paint tined to your selected colour. Q. We have a concrete block wall, which has been painted and has leaked although the leaks have now been fixed. Can we apply the Resene Limelock to the painted wall, or do we have to remove the paint before applying the Resene Limelock? A. If the lime burn has caused the existing paint to flake/blister, then you will need to remove the coating from these areas, to then seal and topcoat. Spot prime bare concrete with Resene Sureseal, and then if an exterior wall, spot prime the Resene Sureseal areas with Resene X-200, then apply two full coats of Resene X-200. Q. I have been using Resene testpots in Metallic Aluminium in a timber toy situation. The previous pots were lustrous and bright and light. The new formula on first use seems duller and does not have that bright silver glitter, lustrous look that I wanted. Can you enlighten me about the new formula? A. While we have made a change to the aluminium flake used to produce the metallic tint base to achieve better in-can stability, our lab studies have shown that the new metallic base has a bit more sparkle; however it does need a good stir to get it homogeneous. You are right about the stirring. Whereas with the old formula I got away with a vigorous shake, after a good stir it now appears to be as bright as the original. January 2018

In very high humidity conditions the film formation could be negatively affected, or there may be a layer of surfactant on the surface. Q. I use many of your testpots with the great variety of colours available but when applied to sealed sanded wood I can’t seem to get a smooth finish. The testpot paint is based on a waterborne paint resin and compared to many other similar paints it is formed at a high solids level. We recommend addition of Resene Hot Weather Additive for application of our waterborne paints under warmer conditions. Q. We’re designing a building to house tanks holding sodium hypochlorite (NaClO). The building is also situated within 500m of the coast. Although the NaClO is contained within tanks there is some possibility (albeit unlikely) of spills during filling from tankers, and during maintenance procedures. We understand that NaClO is very corrosive to metals in general and particularly zinc. Due to the building’s proximity to the coast we have specified that all steelwork (portal frames) be hot-dipped galvanized to at least 600 g/m². We do, however, have some concerns about the possible effect of NaClO fumes on the zinc galvanising and wonder whether your company can advise us on the best protection that can be applied to the steelwork, over the galvanising or instead of the galvanizing. A. Bleach solutions are stabilised with addition of sodium hydroxide which raises the pH to a high level, it is the alkalinity combined with the oxidising feature of the active component that can cause reaction with galvanizing. A high build epoxy such as Resene ArmourCote 510 will act as a barrier to prevent any reaction due to high solution pH, however epoxies are discoloured by contact with even low levels of hypochlorite. To avoid this we specify a two pack polyurethane topcoat such as Resene Uracryl 403. We can arrange a Resene representative to prepare a full specification for you if required. October 2017

Q. I have some old paint that I haven’t used which is around six months old. Can it be returned? A. We can accept untinted paint returns in the original container, up to three months old. Unopened paint in a can does age over time and will eventually either go off or start to thicken and eventually go hard. We try and aim to keep the stock in our stores well rotated so customers receive fresh stock. We tend to update our label information regularly and sometimes tweaks are made to formulations also. Q. Steel RSJ coated with lead based paint. Which system should be used to contain and finish without stripping? A. The lead will be contained within the primer, so as long as that primer has good adhesion to steel substrate, then there should be no issues with release of lead into the environment. The key is that if any lead based paint flakes are removed from the surface that all efforts are made to contain this, as per the attached OSH guidelines. If this is an exterior, any bare areas or corrosion should be spot primed with Resene Armourzinc 120, followed by two coats of Resene Uracryl 403 (a test patch should be done to confirm compatibility with existing product). If this is an interior, spot prime any bare areas of metal or corrosion with Resene GP Metal Primer, followed by two coats of Resene Lustacryl (a test patch should be done to confirm compatibility). Q. I’m looking for advice on painting services lagging. We have Amarflex around pipes which are exposed to view for a portion of the ceiling. A. I have read a lot about window joinery in the FAQ but this is bare aluminium, and I will be covering it in a combination of testpots. Q. Is Resene Lumbersider somewhat flexible? Or can an additive be added to increase its flexibility? A. Q. I was dangerously exposed to 2 pot urethane foam about 40 years ago and was sensitised to the styrene. About 20 years ago I used a urethane varnish and had a moderate wheezing reaction using a proper filtered mask. I wish to brush paint some Aquaclear waterborne urethane varnish and wonder whether Resene is aware of it affecting old-fashioned urethane sensitised people. My reaction was extreme asthma like symptoms. I will use a mask and will be well ventilated but would like a practical answer, not a commercial take no risk approach. A. Free isocyanate can cause sensitization which is seen as an asthma type reaction. However the sensitization only occurs if the isocyanate is inhaled as an aerosol. During spray application. There are a range of different isocyanate hardeners used each with a different sensitisation potential. Resene Aquaclear is a low VOC (volatile organic compound) clear and contains no isocyanate in the manufacture of the resin or product so I see no reason why any isocyanate related reaction is possible with the product. The term urethane does not refer to isocyanate containing. August 2017

Q. I have heard you can wipe an oil based primer applied in less than perfect weather with turps to remove the oily layer so the topcoat sticks better. Is this correct? A. It is an old painters' trick to remove any oily material from the primer. Under marginal conditions oil based primers can cure with an oily surface layer and this is can cause cissing of waterborne topcoats. Wiping with turps is the way to remove the oily material to overcome cissing when topcoating with a product such as Resene Quick Dry waterborne primer undercoat. We recommend Resene Thinner No.2 as it is lower odour and a safer alternative to turps. July 2017

Q. Can you tell me what it is that makes paint electrically insulative or conductive? I am wondering if conductive paints have metal in them. A. Some metallic paints can be electrically conductive but due to corrosion which occurs for many metals, conductive paints are limited to a small number of metals such as silver and nickel. These come at a high cost but provide exceptional performance (high conductivity). Our paint is designed to be cost-effective and conductivity is achieved with ultrafine dispersed carbon. This results in reduced conductivity compared to metals. Insulation coatings rely on materials which are inherently non-conductive including the film-forming component and various inert fillers. The term dielectric is commonly used with performance based on dielectric breakdown strength (high voltages) and the film thickness is often the characteristic that is most important in these coatings. The colour chips on Resene paint colour charts are actually made using our paint which gives a more accurate result. Most people find it hard to visualise how a small chip will look on a wall. Q. My painter says for a light colour he will have to do extra coats? How many coats are needed? A. Normally two topcoats are sufficient for most colours. Q. During the last 9 months I've used quite a lot of solvent paints such as Resene Sureseal and Resene Enamel renovating three houses. What I've found is that the solvent paint produces a heavy skin on top of the paint inside the can and also on the sides of the can. This means that I have to get rid of them every time when I use them and resulting in lumps and wastage of lots of paint. I do close the lid pretty tight. I was told that this is the nature of solvent paint. A. The skinning is akin to drying of the paint when applied. The paints require air to cross link/harden and a partially full can will have more than sufficient air to see the surface of the paint skin. Paint can be anything from a coat of linseed oil to a sophisticated baked on silicone enamel for painting space shuttles. Solvents - make the paint easier to handle and apply. Some solvents make paint hazardous so require good ventilation. A solvent is the substance into which another substance dissolves. Pigments - Prime pigments give colour. Extender pigments control gloss level, sandability, texture etc. Anti-corrosion pigments give corrosion protection. Binder - Can also be known as a resin, a latex or as an oil etc. It holds the paint together. It forms a continuous film and provides adhesion. A binder gives the paint its important properties especially with regards durability.

Q. I have some paint I want to use that I think is about 3 years old. What is the shelf life of paint. Is it still ok to use? A. Our product should be in good order for at least 3 years which is how long we keep our retain samples as part of our ISO accreditation. Most water based products are still quite usable for 5 years+ but it will vary from product to product. If the product can be mixed easily to a homogeneous consistency then usually it is ok to use. Q. Are acrylic enamels as good as oil based enamels? A. Depends upon your definition of good. The exterior durability of waterborne enamels extends to reduced gloss levels, whereas for an oil based enamel a full gloss is the only gloss level that can be used for exterior exposure and even then the paint would undergo rapid surface chalking relatively quickly. Waterborne enamels can be used for opening joinery as can solventborne enamels. Brush marking is a comment associated with brush application of waterborne enamels but this can be markedly reduced. Waterborne enamels will not yellow or suffer embrittlement over time as solventborne enamels do. The only feature which a solventborne enamel surpasses waterborne enamel of the same gloss level is hardness, over time this feature is not an advantage as the solventborne enamel continues to cross link and harden. Q. Just a quick question about painting. When I paint a single coat of paint on an object will the paint be exactly even? What I mean is will the wet paint disperse evenly so you could put a spirit level on it after it has dried and it would be exactly level? A. The degree of levelling depends upon the paint type and how it is applied. One coat of a standard paint is equivalent in thickness to about half the thickness of cello tape. Most solventborne topcoat paints do have sufficient open time to achieve good flow and levelling of the applied wet paint film. Waterborne paints set up at a much faster rate than a solventborne equivalent and this can often see a reduced open time for the applied wet paint film to achieve flow and levelling. There is also a range of open times that exist within waterborne topcoat paints. The initial drying of a waterborne paint is the loss of water from the wet paint. Application of waterborne paints under application conditions of elevated temperatures and reduced humidities will reduce the open time as the wet paint film will set up and dry quickly due to a quick loss of water from the wet paint. Resene sell Resene Hot Weather Additive to extend the open time of our waterborne paints when the paint is applied at elevated temperatures and lower humidities. In general the flow and levelling of waterborne points do not achieve the same degree as a solventborne analogue. The application method must also be considered. For the best level of finish waterborne paints should be spray applied as this application method will give the deposition of an even wet film of paint onto the surface. Roller application will always give a slight orange peel effect but the selection of roller sleeve does impact upon the level of orange peel. Brush marking upon drying is a common outcome of brush application of waterborne paints, even with good lay off technique and addition of Resene Hot Weather Additive. The very fast set up of waterborne enamels can make achieving a completely brush free finish very difficult. June 2016

Q. I have bought metallic paint from you in the colour Resene Obelisk and have got someone to spray it for me but the metallic is not showing through. How do I fix this? A. When spraying using an airless spray unit there is a lot more material coming through and in some cases if you apply a heavier coat the metallic flake can sink back into the film. By standing back between 600 - 800mm from the wall, using a FFT414 tip and applying a tack coat to build it up to a light even wet film will help. It is a lot easier to control when using a pressure pot unit as the volume is easier to keep up with (not a gravity gun as you would need to fill it too often and may lose the wet edge as a result). As another painting company is painting the rest of the house I requested the painter reconfirm the actual paint colour used. I was told that Resene Quarter Parchment was used, made by another company. From looking at the Resene website I feel that this paint formula does not match Resene Quarter Parchment at full strength. I would appreciate you letting me know if the painter used the correct Resene paint colour and strength, and if not whether it matches a Resene colour. A. What you have experienced is an altogether common event. However choosing colours from a web site is always difficult as the colour reproduction of a screen is often poor. Suggest you obtain a Resene testpot of the Resene colour to check colour variation. The only way to get the correct Resene colour is to use a Resene paint and Resene colour tinters. If the painter has used another product then they cannot get the exact same Resene colour because they have the incorrect paint and they won't have the same tinters or the correct Resene colour formulation. If you have asked for a Resene colour/product on your project then you should be able to request that the painter uses what you asked for and does not substitute another product. If you asked specifically for Resene when the job was quoted then any extra product or labour cost would normally be paid for by the painter if they have not used the product you had requested. Q. Is it possible to paint over existing Seratone® (or similar product)? I am on a limited budget and won't be able to replace the wall linings for several years so would like to paint them in the meantime. It's sort of a yellow and white pattern, and horrible next to the new grey wallpaper. A. Using Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner ensure the surfaces to be painted are clean and free from grease, paying particular attention to hand contact areas. Apply a thin coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer and allow to cure without water contact for at least 48 hours before overcoating. Then apply two coats of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen. Roll all coats using the recommended roller sleeve. The new paint system will take five days to develop good initial adhesion and continue to cure for an additional three weeks until full cure occurs. In the early stages the paint surface will not have good resistance to cleaners or abrasion as these features develop as the film undergoes curing. January 2016

Q. I have just completed a job using waterborne enamel and have found it seems to dry fast and leaves brushmarks. A. In my experience it is almost impossible to achieve a brushmark free finish when applying waterborne paints to any reasonable sized area. By their nature waterborne paints set up and dry quickly so there is limited time for flow and levelling to occur with brush application. Waterborne enamels set and dry much quicker than waterborne paints based on conventional acrylic resins and this does mean that achieving a brushmark free finish with the product is even more challenging. The best way we have found for brushing is to add the Resene Hot Weather Additive at the maximum addition rate, when brushing apply a generous wet layer and lay off but don't go back over the paint trying to remove any brushmarks as this will make matters worse as the paint film will already be part way through its set up phase and flow and levelling cannot then occur. Flow and levelling is also affected by temperature and humidity. If you are painting indoors do not run a heat pump as this reduces humidity which increases the rate of water loss from the wet coating. July 2015

It is usual to coat the brass with a clear lacquer to prevent oxidation of the brass surface, so any lacquer layer will need to be removed before trying to age the brass. Q. I would like to know how long the high VOC paints (like oil based enamels) emit gasses when used inside. I have read that moisture cure polyurethane can emit gasses for months. Is that also true with the paints? My painter has said that you don't get such a good finish using waterbased over old oil enamels. A. The loss of VOC is determined by temperatures and ventilation, and there is no way to predict given the variables. Resene solventborne enamels are now made using a solvent with a very low aromatic content, and thus are better for users and those exposed to the fresh paint from a VOC safety than traditional aromatic containing solvents such as those used in moisture cured polyurethane clears. Changes in room air volumes and exhausting to the outside is the key factor in removal of VOC from a painted room. Not all VOCs present a potential harm particularly in a one off exposure. Just because the human nose detects a new odour this does not immediately constitute harm. In general with good ventilation the majority of VOCs have left the paint film within 48 hours. May 2015

I have just glossed after dry weather of two days and then sanded then applied two undercoats which were left for adequate time between coats etc. And 48 hours later rain hit and the exterior gloss has bubbled - why? Q. Are solventborne paints, like Resene Sureseal safe to use? We have used some solventborne paint and it seems to have a lingering odour. A. Resene has a long standing commitment to the replacement of paints with reduced VOC (volatile organic content) paints, however the replacement product must give the customer the same performance as the product being replaced. We provide label, data sheet, and Safety Data Sheet information for all Resene products and direct users to where this information can be found. All paints irrespective of type (water or solventborne) must be applied and allowed to cure with good ventilation with VOC's being exhausted to the exterior atmosphere. The human nose is very sensitive to a new odour and can detect very low levels which may be well below any identified health impact. It is also accepted that a one off exposure does not contribute to any health issues. Resene has introduced lower odour versions of many solventborne paints, including Resene Sureseal. The lower odour paints are formulated using a solvent with a very low level of solvent known as aromatic hydrocarbons. This change significantly increases the safety profile of the paints. We also have a lower odour thinner (Resene Thinner No.2) to maintain the lower odour of thinned paint. If mineral turps was used for thinning and clean up then this would negate the benefits of the lower odour formulation. I suggest that you try to open all areas to increase air flow to remove any VOC retained in furnishings etc. April 2015

Q. We are required to provide UV protection for multi-layer polyethylene natural gas piping. Can you please recommend a suitable Resene paint? I understand that solventborne paints are not permitted in this application. A. Paint adhesion of polyethylene is difficult to achieve; the only way we have developed is to heat the plastic to near melt using a gas flame then topcoating, clearly not appropriate for large areas of onsite piping which contain a flammable material. Suggest you may need to look at a UV resistant pipe wrapping to give the required level of UV protection. April 2015

Q. My roof painter wants to use our chosen topcoat colour only on the last coat and use similar leftover paint but of a different colour on the first topcoat. I presume this is cost saving but I am uneasy about this and would have thought two coats of the same colour would be far better and wear much longer. A. We always recommend using the correct colour for the topcoats, which may be 2 or 3 topcoats depending on colour, surface etc. It would also pay to check that the brand of paint being used is the brand you have chosen. Some painters will colour match in cheaper products and you won't end up with the quality of paint and colour you were expecting. If you are paying for a professional painter, then the cost of the paint is only a very small part of the project cost (generally only 15% or so of the painting project cost). It's best to use a quality paint tinted correctly. April 2015

Q. Do you make a white paint that does not contain titanium white? It is needed for a historic war memorial. A titanium white paint will be too bright. A. I would be surprised if there is any white paint that now does not use TiO2 as the main white pigment. Q. I had trouble getting a good finish with water based enamels the one time I tried, but it was a while ago, and maybe they have improved. The paint dragged and didn't seem to flow at all. Is there a technique for getting the best result? A. Brush marking remains an application issue with waterborne enamels vs solventborne enamels. This is due to the quick set up of the wet paint film which gives reduced time for flow and levelling to occur. This is referred to as open time and can be extended by adding Resene Hot Weather Additive at the recommended rate and applying a good thick wet film to further retard set up time. Care is needed with thick wet films as runs and slumping can occur. We are constantly trying to upgrade the application characteristics of our waterborne enamels to get them more aligned with traditional solventborne enamels. March 2015

However there will be settling and I suggest that you take the cans to your nearest Resene ColorShop and ask them to shake the cans for you before you open them. Coverage can be influenced by the paint rheology (thickness), Resene has always adopted the formulation philosophy of trying to deliver to our customers as brushmark free finish as possible without compromising other application features. The type of thickeners we use to achieve this can lead to over extension of the wet paint, which will reduce coverage per coat. Brushmarking is most obvious with full gloss paints. The gloss level of paints can vary within a standard range – e.g. what Resene calls a gloss finish is generally higher gloss than many other manufacturers. The lower the sheen the more the brushmarks are hidden. When you're painting it is always good to make sure you keep an eye on the spreading rate. All our paint is tested on black and white cards to ensure two coat coverage in white. Even after 1 coat the original colour is mostly covered by most of our products and it is easily obliterated after two coats. If it is spread too thinly then you won't get the normal coverage. Or if thinner or water is added to the paint that will also reduce the coverage. We generally recommend for large painting projects that you estimate the amount of paint you should be using for each area to make sure the coverage is right. E.g. if you coat 24 square metres in 1 coat you should use around 2 litres of paint. If you find that you are using less then you will need to apply it thicker. Depending on technique some people spread the paint further than others. January 2015

Q. I am erecting some structural steel. The steel is galvanised and coated with Resene Armourcote 220. Which Resene Uracryl product should I use as the finish coat? A. You can use either Resene Uracryl 402 (semi-gloss) or Resene Uracryl 403 (gloss). Given that the Resene Armourcote 220 may have gone past the recoat window of the product, wash down the Resene Armourcote 220 with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash and apply a coat of Resene Vinyl Etch before applying the two coats of Resene Uracryl finish. Q. Looking for a paint system for steel and galvanised steel. Does this product galvanise the steel or is the steel galvanised before the product is applied? A. Paint is normally applied to a galvanised surface. Zinc rich paints can be used as an alternative to hot dip galvanising. December 2014

Q. Can I paint over an oil based paint using a waterbased paint? How do I determine if it is oil based in the first instance? A. The meths test is the easiest way to determine if it is a waterborne paint. Wipe areas down to remove any dirt and chalking. Wet a cloth with meths and quickly transfer to the painted surface and rub. If the paint is removed or becomes tacky then it is safe to assume that is a waterborne paint. You can apply Resene waterborne paints over old sound enamel paint when repainting weatherboards. Wash down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash, and with 180 grit sandpaper, dust off and then apply two coats of Resene topcoat. Suggest that you contact your nearest Resene ColorShop if there are areas of flaking paint. December 2014

Q. Can waterborne paints be painted over old alkyds? A. Application of waterborne paints to aged alkyds is now commonplace with the proviso that the old alkyd is clean, sound and thoroughly sanded prior to application of the waterborne paint finish. Resene acrylics are formulated using adhesion promoters to give the desired level of adhesion. Resene Wood Primer (oil based primer) can be topcoated with any Resene exterior acrylic paint finish after a minimum dry time of 16 hours. November 2014

Q. Can I use an acrylic tint meant for acrylic sealer to colour 2 pack polyurethane sealer? Will the polyurethane accept the acrylic tint? A. The colourants used to tint waterborne paints contain additives which react with the two pack hardener and therefore are not suitable for tinting a 2 pack waterborne polyurethane. November 2014

Q. I have some old Resene acrylic paint that is lumpy/chunky. What can I mix with it to remove the lumps? It's been sitting around in the garage for two years. A. If you stir well with a wide flat stirrer and you end up with a smooth mix then it should be ok to use. Q. I was planning to make a smoker using terracotta pots and then painting them. Will this work? A. You can only paint things if you can maintain constant hand contact at the hottest time. If you can't do that then we don't recommend painting it. Normally for terracotta we recommend sealing inside and out. If not sealed inside then the moisture off the cooking will come through the terracotta and bubble off the outside paint. October 2014

Q. Can you please tell me the 'shelf life' of acrylic paint if unopened? A. Depends upon storage conditions. The cooler the storage conditions the better. Waterborne paints are susceptible to bacterial breakdown. We add in can preservatives to control this but the effectiveness of these is related to storage conditions. Paint will also undergo settling over time but can usually be reincorporated with stirring to restore the original properties. October 2014

Q. I have an un-opened container of Resene Woodsman Oil that is a few years old. Is this still OK to use and can you thin it down? A. Ensure that you thoroughly stir the can contents as the pigments will have settled. When this is done the product should be good to go. October 2014

Q. I have a timber built conservatory finished in an exterior gloss white paint. My problem is that flies defecate on the paint leaving stubborn dark stains that only a cream cleaner will remove and only then if cleaned after a minimum of delay. Do any of your paints offer resistance to this menace? A. Only suggestion would be to upgrade to a 2 pack polyurethane gloss that would make cleaning easier. You would need to clean down the existing paint coating, assuming it is sound, then apply a coat of Resene Quick Dry Waterborne Primer Undercoat followed by 3 coats of Resene Uracryl 403 Gloss. Q. I am wanting to paint the fabric of a chair and have been recommended latex paint. A. Latex is a term now replaced by waterborne. You can use Resene Lumbersider for this but we cannot guarantee that the paint on the fabric will not crack when stressed. October 2014

Q. I am working on the Christchurch rebuild and we are doing a lot of work on concrete elements which have been repaired by epoxy crack injection - tilt up panels, RC beams and RC columns. I am wondering are there any compatibility issues between the crack injection repair and the paint intended to finish the element? What undercoat would you recommend? A. All two pack epoxy paints, and fillers have a set recoat time after which the epoxy material usually needs to be thoroughly sanded for painting. Etch type vinyl primers are well established as adhesion primers for non-ferrous metals but also work as an adhesion primer on sound epoxy paints and fillers. Resene has Resene ConcreteSeal 3 in 1 which is a roller or brush applied etch type adhesion primer and we recommend this product as the adhesion primer for epoxy paints and fillers to be coated in most types of topcoat paints with the exception of acrylic epoxies, alkyds and waterborne two pack polyurethane paints. Q. When a professional paint job has been completed using semi-gloss enamel and a brush should you always expect to have brushmarks or is it more likely the quality of the work? A. There may be some brushmarking in the existing coating that has affected the look of the topcoat. It is virtually impossible to totally eliminate brushmarking with this mode of application. We have moved to lower odour formulations for our solventborne enamels, the change to lower odour solvents has made the product safer to use. July 2014

Q. What does the pot life mean for a 2 pack product? A. Once the two components are mixed the mixed product must be used within the stated pot life. Q. I'm just wondering where to find the index for your colour pencils, so that when ordering you know what the colours are? Are you able to advise please? A. To make up a Resene colour using the colour pencils you normally need multiple pencils (so you mix the colours). There is a pencil recipe list on our website – at this link. Or you can look up the colour in the online colour library and click through to the swatch and the pencil recipe is there. There are approximately 100 pencils in the set and you can mix and match them to achieve 'pencil versions' of Resene colours. Q. The colours on my computer seem to have a mauve look to them? A. The colours on the computer are all electronically measured from the original colours; however every computer screen will display them slightly differently. Some screens are truer colour than others. The limits of the way computers show colours also means some colours look more like the originals than others. Generally the very light colours and some greens are the most affected. You may need to clean or adjust your screen to get a better representation of the colour or pop into a Resene ColorShop to view larger physical swatches of the colours. July 2014

Q. We ordered some paint in the same colour that is already on our house but it looks different when we open the container. A. When you compare old to new are you comparing the paint on the house or the paint vs the colour chip? Just that the paint on the house may have faded/colour changed over time – which you wouldn't notice as it would be gradual but it would be obvious if you compared old to new. The first step would be to compare the new paint (dry) to the colour chip/sample of the colour. If you compare wet paint to dry paint there can be quite a variation, so it's always best to compare dry paint to dry paint. If you find the new paint does match the colour chip but not the old paint, if you bring in the old paint, Resene ColorShop staff can arrange a colour match for you. July 2014

Q. I need more paint of a particular colour but of course can't find the tin. Original job done about 15 years ago. If I sent pictures of the colour could anybody identify it or one near it? What would the cost be? A. It is hard to identify colours electronically as the lighting often changes how they look in photos. Q. What is the difference between water proof and water resistant paint? A. The terms are often used loosely. However, from the CCANZ CP 01 2014 the following definitions are given: Waterproof the complete and total resistance of a building membrane to the ingress of any water in either the liquid or vapour state. Waterproof Membrane A membrane impervious to water which is placed to prevent the passage of water and water vapour through a concrete or concrete masonry element. Weather tightness: Term used to describe the resistance of a building to the weather. Weather tightness is a state where water is prevented from entering and accumulating behind the cladding in amounts that can cause undue dampness or damage to the building elements. Q. Have Resene considered reducing the amount of thinners and replacing it with more solids in their solventborne products to reduce the odour? A. The answer is yes. Our approach has been two fold. The development of low VOC paints has been at the forefront of Resene R&D for the last 30 years. Our policy has been to replace solventborne paints with a reduced VOC version but only if the performance characteristics of the lower odour version meets or exceeds that of the paint being replaced. Our list of Environmental Choice Approved products is extensive. The odour of the majority of decorative solventborne paints is due to the aromatic content of the solvents used to formulate the paints. We have introduced versions of a number of shelf line enamel primers, undercoats and top coats which are formulated using solvents with less than 1% aromatic content. These are sold as lower odour versions and while the total VOC has not changed, they are lower odour compared to enamel formulations using traditional solvents such as white spirits and mineral turps. Q. I am wanting a high quality waterborne tint that contains no glycols. A. The term glycols covers a large range of chemical entities. As a general class glycols are used in many colourant formulations to ensure that the colourant does not dry out and thus can be dispensed at point of sale. All Resene machine colourants are non VOC (contain no formulation component that has a boiling point less than 250 degrees celsium) and are ethylene and propylene glycol free.contains no glycols I want to paint our roof with Resene Rustic Red roof paint and I also want to paint the window trims in the same colour. When I test it on the window frames I get a colour that is much brighter than the colour chart. Can you help me understand what is happening? A. The difference may be due to gloss level and possibly the size of the chip versus a larger area. Resene colour charts and testpots are low sheen finish. Resene Hi-Glo is a gloss finish. Higher sheen finishes will look cleaner and brighter. Lower sheen and flat finishes look duller and muddier.contains no glycols Can you provide guidance for painting over an oil based paint (internal windows) with a waterborne paint? A. Assuming the existing paint system is sound, wash down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash and wipe down with a cloth and cleam water. The paint in Resene Testpots is mainly Resene Lumbersider, so yes the same paint as you would get in the Resene Lumbersider paint cans. Q. How do I turn a mid-dark brown oil-based paint to black? A. It is unlikely that you can change the colour to a true black. Black is achieved by addition of a black tinter to a base containing no other pigments and in your case this requirement cannot be achieved. November 2013

Q. What is the difference with the solventborne enamel paint today compared to 10 years ago when I last used the product? A. Advances in paint technology are usually made in small increments and some of these advances are not immediately obvious to an end user. There have been few if any changes to the resin technology used to produce solventborne enamels, Resene have recently introduced a number of lower odour enamel products. The lower odour formulations contain the same level of solvent but the solvents used for the lower odour formulations have a very low aromatic content. Aromatic hydrocarbon solvents carry a higher level of potential health risk to end users so the move to a lower odour version based on very low aromatic content solvents is a positive move. Resene has continued to focus on formulating environmentally sustainable paints with volatile organic compound (VOC) levels that meet the requirements of Environmental Choice Approval. August 2013

Q. I am looking for a method of hand painting a large aircraft and obtaining as near to a high gloss finish like a spray paint job would look. I can't use spray equipment due to the desire to have no overspray. The aircraft is in a museum and can't easily be moved or shrouded. I understand there are roller methods followed by a very light soft brush barely touching the paint. The brush is used to remove or burst the air bubbles. Do you know of such a method? A. There are certain sleeve types that can give a rolled finish with very little orange peel but they’re only used for waterborne paints. You are correct: you can roll on a paint then lightly tip off with a brush to remove entrained air. What we seek to do is to select a roller sleeve for the paint type being used to avoid entrained air and tipping off then can attenuate some of the roller stipple to give a finish with minimal orange peel appearance. Q. I need to match colours on a house that was painted 7 years ago. How can I find the colour matches? A. Scrape off a small portion of the colour (in an inconspicuous area) and bring it into the Resene ColorShop. They can then measure the colour using a Resene ColorHelper which will tell them what the closest Resene colours are. The matched colour will be for colour and not gloss level, you will then need to decide on the closest gloss level. Our Resene ColorShop staff can assist with this. Before you take the flake it is best to wash down the area you are using for colour matching as if there is chalking of the paint this may give a false colour. May 2013

Q. Where do I find info on the best time to paint? Late summer? Autumn? Spring? A. Paint application is dictated by environmental conditions and not necessarily the season. However the majority of exterior painting jobs are undertaken over summer months. Waterborne paints are now the predominant type of paint used for both exterior and interior painting. The environmental conditions that are required for successful application of waterborne paints are temperature and relative humidity. As long as the paint is applied within the stated boundaries for either of these there is no seasonal restriction on painting. Standard waterborne paints cannot be applied at temperatures less than 10°C or when temperatures are liable to drop below this during the drying (film formation stage) of the applied paint. This temperature limitation is to ensure that the film forms and dries with the required film properties, waterborne paints will dry at temperatures below the 10 degree cut off but film formation and final film properties are compromised. Resene now has a selection of waterborne paints that can be applied at temperatures down to 2°C and still dry to give the required dry film properties and these are marketed as ‘Wintergrade’ versions. Relative humidity is the other environmental factor that limits when waterborne paints can be applied. For film formation to occur as designed water must be lost from the wet waterborne paint, and as the relative humidity increases the rate of water loss to the atmosphere is reduced. We do not recommend application of any waterborne paint at a relative humidity of greater than 85% as application and drying above this affects film formation and subsequent film properties. There is a relationship between temperature and humidity that also needs to be considered, especially when painting metal roofing and that is dew point. Dew point is the atmospheric temperature below which water droplets begin to condense and dew can form. A safe rule of thumb is not to paint at or above 85% relative humidity especially during a period where the temperatures are expected to fall. Metal roofs are the classic situation where painting late in the day with waterborne paints can lead to the paint being washed from the surface due to dew formation on the roof. This occurs because the paint film cannot form in the required manner in time to reach a state of cure that develops water resistance. The dew point considerations can be presumed to be satisfied if a thin clearly defined film of water applied to the surface with a damp cloth evaporates within 15 minutes. There is no seasonal restriction to paint application as long as the environmental conditions meet the requirements for the paint being used. May 2013
