Please refer to the actual paint or product sample. Resene colour charts, testpots and samples are available for ordering online.

Q. We are looking for a colour for a south facing bedroom which has a large window. The rest of our house is mostly Resene Sea Fog. We are looking for something to warm up this room but in keeping with the greys we already have.

A. South facing bedrooms suit deeper variants – to create warmth – as they basically have less white.

You might like to investigate these greys – Resene Quill Grey, Resene Double Merino, Resene Half Truffle or Resene Double White Pointer.

Q. Is Resene Armadillo the best dark grey to go with Resene Half Lemon Grass?

A. Resene Armadillo looks great with Resene Half Lemon Grass. You might also like to investigate – Resene Squall, Resene Gravel, Resene Half Gravel or Resene Double Tapa.

Resene ColorShops have a store library of A4 paint samples of Resene colours – ask the staff to assist you in finding these colours, and then you can compare tones – from there for those any appeal, I recommend trying them at your home with Resene testpots.

Q. I saw an outdoor window trim that looked black but had a dark green tinge to it. How can I achieve this?

A. You might like to test these colours – the green will be more evident at certain times of the day and elevations – Resene Zeus, Resene Cod Grey or Resene Karaka.

Q. I am struggling with what colour my kitchen cabinetry should be as my walls are going to be in Resene Half Truffle with Resene Alabaster on ceiling/trims and door. I thought Resene White as I thought it would work best with Resene half Truffle but my builder said I am playing it safe... help?

A. Generally speaking we don’t like to paint our cabinetry too often, so staying neutral but modernising and complementing Resene Half Truffle is a good option. Some things to consider before making a final decision on colour, for the cabinetry – is the flooring or benchtop going to be replaced? Are there any colours to consider in the space adjacent to the kitchen?

To get you started investigate these colours – paint two coats of Resene testpots on to A2 card (available at Resene ColorShops) and attach to the cabinetry in the kitchen to compare which tones work for you – Resene Half White Pointer, Resene Double Truffle or Resene Credence.

Q. I’ve got a dark hallway and I was thinking of painting the doors and architraves Resene Eighth Pearl Lusta. I'm wondering if that would have too much yellow in it. The walls are painted Resene Thorndon Cream.

A. It is a lovely combination for a hallway. Resene Eighth Pearl Lusta will look like a soft white in the hall – it shouldn’t look yellow at all if there is low/non-natural light – if it is a bright hallway then it may look a little warm. How it appears will also be affected by your flooring.

Resene testpots are your best friend – paint Resene Eighth Pearl Lusta onto A2 card available from Resene ColorShops, and place against the skirting board to see how it appears at day and night with the Resene Thorndon Cream and your floor.

Q. We are repainting the exterior of our house which is a 1970s Lockwood Bach. We want a white but are unsure of which white as I was told that some can be quite glary. There is also a wall that (we have painted with a white undercoat) that surrounds the deck. The roof of the house is being repainted in an ebony/charcoal. I like the colours Resene Half Sea Fog/Resene Sea Fog. Will Resene Half Sea Fog or Resene Sea Fog work and still look white as I don't want the house grey.

A. Resene Sea Fog is a great exterior colour with a charcoal roof – it is best to steer clear of bright whites in this environment – colours lighten and brighten outside in natural bright light so that is why it’s always better to choose the slightly darker option. Resene Sea Fog does have a slight grey edge, if you paint Resene Sea Fog next to the white wall around the deck it will look slightly grey – but once everything is painted the same colour it will appear as a softer white.

Resene Half Sea Fog will definitely be whiter but at the end of the day, you need to decide whether a soft hint of grey, like Resene Sea Fog – which will be non-existent in bright light, but may throw a little grey in shadow or on the south side – is better as it won’t appear so blinding, especially in a beach environment.

For the roof I recommend a cooler toned, near black such as Resene Double Foundry – you can place larger sized black planters or pots or furniture on the deck to link the roof to the rest of the house and balance the scheme.

I also suggest you investigate Resene CoolColour for the roof – darker colours on the roof absorb heat and this can affect the temperature inside the house. Resene CoolColours are where the colour appears the same, but due to clever pigment technology, more of the heat is transferred away from the roof, prolonging the life of the coating and colour. Talk to your Resene ColorShop staff for more information.

Q. I’m using Resene Sea Fog as my wall colour and wish to have a white ceiling colour, not stark white, I was thinking of Resene Alabaster. Would this work?

A. Resene Alabaster looks great on a ceiling with Resene Sea Fog.

It is a near white with a slightly grey edge. Colours on ceilings tend to shadow, so I if they want it to look white without being too stark, then I recommend Resene Alabaster.

You could also investigate Resene Double Alabaster – (which is the same as Resene Quarter Sea Fog) – but it will have more of a grey edge.

Q. Our house is cedar and was built in 1985. The roof is a lighter grey (or unpainted), the guttering is a darker grey. But the aluminium window trims are brown. The inside of the house is painted in Resene Half Sea Fog and I like that, it works well. But that will need doing again in the next year or two.

I am considering Resene Half Sea Fog for the exterior now. Would that look OK or would Resene Sea Fog look better for some reason? Would I get the soffits done in the same colour as the rest of the exterior? (At the moment the exterior is Resene Beryl Green and the soffits look white).

A. Resene Sea Fog is perfect for interior and exterior use – it works well in urban and more natural environments. When painting the main body of an exterior, it is best to steer clear of bright whites, so that is why Resene Sea Fog for most people is a better external colour than Resene Half Sea Fog.

All colours including whites look darker under soffits – keeping them lighter will enhance the quality of light into the rooms, and generally works with this style of house.

Consider whether you are happy for your windows on the exterior to be enhanced more – as they will with a light grey white such as Resene Sea Fog – Resene Double Sea Fog or Resene Triple Sea Fog might work better – all colours including whites will lighten outside in natural bright light.

So you could try:

  • Walls in Resene Sea Fog or Resene Double Sea Fog, with soffit in Resene Double Alabaster
  • Walls in Resene Triple Sea Fog, with soffit in Resene Half Sea Fog.

These grey whites will work well with the roof and gutters.

Q. In a sunny outdoor area I am painting a wooden screen. In the same area are some black planters and hedging. What is a good neutral colour that is non/least reflective as there is a spa and outdoor furniture in this space? Our house colour is Resene Eighth Tapa and the roof is Resene Gauntlet. (Some inside rooms are Resene Silver Chalice).

Which neutral would you recommend please? A friend has Resene Half Concrete and that seems quite reflective.

A. True black has a reflectance value of 0%. True white has a reflectance value of 100%.

Resene charts have the LRV (light reflectance value) listed for each colour. Resene Half Concrete is 78% so you can see why it seems very reflective to your eye.

With the lovely earthy colour scheme you have existing for your exterior – I suggest you continue this theme – earthy mid toned colours will be less reflective. The colours recommended will pair well with the Resene Half Tapa, Resene Gauntlet and Resene Black.

Try Resene Quarter Fuscous Grey, Resene Half Fuscous Grey, Resene Eighth Bokara Grey, Resene Double Tapa or Resene Half Gauntlet.

Try these colours with Resene testpots. You will find exterior colours appear lighter outside due to bright natural light.

Q. I need help with white. I'm painting three out of our four walls white, with a green feature wall. What whites go well with: Resene Envy, Resene Sea Nymph and Resene Summer Green? I have tried Resene Half Black White and Resene Half Rice Cake, would they work? We'll have rimu floors. it's a large north east facing room with lots of sunlight – with large windows on three sides. Our kitchen will have warm white cabinets with walnut trim on some feature cupboards. The aluminium windows are a soft silver colour.

A. Resene Half Rice Cake is my suggestion – it has a subtle grey edge that prevents too much yellow common through from north facing light and green from the east. It also pairs well with native timbers, other warm whites and greens.

September 2022

Q. I have wooden floors, Resene Half Rice Cake walls and Resene Eighth Rice Cake ceilings – I want an internal door colour that isn't white – maybe a soft grey? Or a dirty light pink? But nothing too dark. Our kitchen is white with sage/blue tiles.

A. A soft dusty pink or soft grey will work – the consideration is to decide if a soft pink on your doors will date – although soft pink is a classic in a sense – doors are quite labour intensive to change colour in time – a soft grey on doors gives you space to change your accents and scheme within rooms – but if you love the pink – then go for it!

I recommend painting A2 card (available at Resene ColorShops), in two coats using a Resene testpot in a soft pink and a grey that appeals, and attaching to the door to see which looks best with your lighting and colours.

Try Resene Half Truffle, Resene Quarter Foggy Grey, Resene Quill Grey, Resene Ethereal or Resene Soothe.

September 2022

Q. We are having a splashback installed painted with a Resene colour. I'm told a neutral grey would look best, as it's only a small kitchen/house I don't want something to dark that will make it smaller.

A. My suggestion is to have the splashback the same colour as the kitchen walls – this will open up the space – just be aware that standard float glass has a green edge to it – low iron oxide glass is clear and is best to ensure the colour looks like you expect it to.

The glass will create another dimension without adding colour – which can be added through kitchen accessories, plants etc.

September 2022

Q. Is it preferable to paint walls, ceiling, doors, trims etc in the same colour or do you use a half or quarter strength on ceiling, doors and trims?

A. This is personal preference and the design and style of the room need to be taken into consideration. Currently trending for smaller spaces, whites and neutrals in contemporary homes – the ceilings and walls are being painted the same. Heritage homes, larger spaces and walls with mid to deeper shades – generally ceilings are a white or a lighter variant of the walls depending on the colour – doors and trims need to be addressed as whether they should be featured – if there are a lot of standard doors down a narrow hallway for example – white might draw the eye to them too much, they may suit being a slightly deeper shade of the walls or half strength.

The whole scheme needs to be considered.

September 2022

Q. Just wondering do people paint the walls and ceiling the same colour? We are thinking about painting the walls Resene Bianca or Resene Half Bianca and just wondering if the ceiling should be the same or Resene White? Could you also please advise if the architrave should be a different colour to the walls?

A. Yes it is currently trending to paint walls and ceilings the same – however, this depends on the style – heritage homes such as villas always suit white ceilings and trims – contemporary homes look modern and upmarket with the ceilings and walls in a light colour – but it does depend on the space – this approach may not be suitable for the entire home.

The architraves – are you meaning the scotia of the ceiling – the ceiling scotia is typically the same colour as the ceiling.

Q. I am after some colour suggestions with what colour to part the weatherboard/Linea part of house that is currently black. The plaster part of the house will stay white. It has white window frames and a grey garage door and roof. I’m open to all suggestions – I’m thinking of grey, white, pale blue anything really.

A. Lighter will look great with your windows – which at the moment are the focus.

Colours do lighten outside – so paint A2 card with two coats using Resene testpots and attach to the walls of the house – painting on to the black walls will not give you the true reality of the colour – and you need to see it in the area you are painting.

Try Resene Triple Duck Egg Blue, Resene Half Silver Chalice, Resene Surrender or Resene Triple Concrete.

September 2022

Q. I have had the exterior of my house painted in Resene Cougar and Resene Half Bokara Grey. I would like to paint my front door a shade of orange. Can you recommend a couple of choices please?

A. See if any of these appeal: Resene Clockwork Orange, Resene Sunbaked, Resene Sunrise or Resene Kamikaze.

September 2022

Q. I would like to use the colour Resene Black White throughout the interior of my house. What shade of Resene Black White would you recommend for the walls, trims, ceiling etc and finish for each please?

A. It really does depend on lighting, space, style – but typically Resene Black White in a low sheen is for walls, with Resene Triple Black White for walls in cooler rooms or rooms with low light as it has a subtle warmth about it, compared to its lighter variants.

Do you want the doors, trims etc to be highlighted – if not they can be in a semi-gloss Resene Black White, if you do think they are worth highlighting then I recommend Resene Half Black White and the ceiling in Resene Half Black White – this is generally a flat finish.

September 2022

Q. I am looking for a soft sage green to paint villaboard in my bathroom. So far the rest of my 1910 villa is Resene Thorndon Cream in various strengths. The ceilings are Resene Quarter Thorndon Cream, but I don't mind going lighter if this helps to fit in with a soft sage green.

A. See if any of these soft sage greens appeal: Resene Secrets, Resene Green Spring or Resene Peace. I recommend Resene Eighth Thorndon Cream for the ceiling.

September 2022

Q. I want an off-white between Resene Quarter Pearl Lusta (too warm) and Resene Alabaster (too stark white). Can you suggest a colour in between?

A. See if any of these appeal: Resene Quarter Rice Cake, Resene Eighth Rice Cake, Resene Half Bianca or Resene Quarter Bianca.

September 2022

Q. We are building and wanting advice on what colour to paint our soffits. The house is painted in Resene Element. Some of the eaves are quite big, but then we also have a couple of open areas. Should we just go with Resene Element or something that is a bit lighter but in the same tonings – what would you recommend? We tried Resene Baltic Sea, but feel it’s too grey.

A. Because of the sheer size of the soffit as you say, in some areas, I suggest going a little lighter – something that will tone with the element. Try Resene Quarter Bokara Grey or Resene Porter.

September 2022

Q. Is Resene Double Rice Cake a warm white? I would like it to work with Resene Quarter Pavlova on windowsills etc. Would I get away with using Resene Double Rice Cake? I just want a neutral clean warm looking bedroom. It’s a small room and doesn’t have much light.

A. I find the Resene Rice Cake family can look warm or cool depending on what you accentuate the room with – so with warmer coloured decor it can be great for a low light bedroom.

Resene Double Rice Cake and Resene Rice Cake could both work – double will morph more between cream and a hint of green while Resene Rice Cake will appear as a warm clean white – both will pair with Resene Quarter Pavlova for the trims.

If is worth taking the time to paint A2 card, two coats with Resene testpots and compare in the room – colour will change if it can, depending on what you surround it with, and the source of natural and artificial light.

September 2022

Q. I wondered if you could advise me of a new colour scheme for my cedar house.

At present the weatherboards are Resene Brown Bramble with the roof a mid-green with a Karaka green garage door with similar colour window joinery.

A. You might like to see if any of these colours appeal for your cedar: Resene Castle Rock, Resene Copyrite, Resene Cobblestone, Resene Taupe Grey, Resene Archive Grey or Resene Quarter Chicago.

September 2022

Q. We are looking at painting our walls white all throughout to brighten up the place. Can ceilings and walls be painted white? I was looking at Resene White. Is that the best white you have? What is the difference between Resene White and Resene Black White?

A. Resene White is a very bright white – no tint.

It is a great white with for trims and ceilings, but for walls – if your room needs brightening up it may actually feel a bit cold. Low light rooms suit warmer whites.

Resene Black White is a grey/white – it is soft but can have a cool appearance in some rooms, depending on aspect.

If you want to use a white for walls and ceilings – yes you can do this and it is trending currently – it gives a modern, spacious feeling – then I recommend slightly warmer whites – some of these might work depending on lighting, furnishings/colours.

You could try Resene Half Merino, Resene Double Alabaster, Resene Half Sea Fog, Resene Quarter Rice Cake or Resene Quarter White Pointer.

September 2022

Q. We are renovating our kitchen and currently choosing wall colours. The cabinetry will be in birch ply and the benchtop is an off white, speckled engineered stone. The kitchen is small and south facing, with some easterly light but generally pretty dark without lighting. So we want to create a warm, light feel in the kitchen to go with the ply cabinetry. We have used Resene Quarter Thorndon Cream and Resene Half Thorndon Cream in other parts of the house and it seems to suit our house well, so we are thinking of using that on some of the walls, but would also like a green or a blue colour as contrast or as feature walls. What would you recommend? We have Resene Duck Egg Blue elsewhere in the house and we are not wanting to repeat that colour in the kitchen.

A. The lighter, brighter tones of Resene Quarter Thorndon Cream or Resene Half Thorndon Cream will work well in a south facing kitchen. Pale greens and blues will keep the space feeling open – not too muted so they don’t appear sour in a room with low light, especially eastern light and not too clean and bright so they appear cool.

See if any of these appeal and paint testpots on A2 card to try them out: Resene Morning Haze, Resene Breeze, Resene Ziggurat or Resene Botticelli.

September 2022

Q. I am doing a renovation with new joinery is Titania. I would like internal walls and the ceiling to be the same colour to give more feeling of openness and space in the small open living area. I was thinking of Resene Titania for joinery and Resene Half Titania for walls and ceilings.

A. Resene Half Titania will definitely work – to make sure you like the undertone – paint two coats of a testpot onto A2 card and see if you like it in the space, if possible.

Painting ceiling and walls the same colour gives a modern, upmarket appearance.

For a slight change of tone I recommend you also test Resene Quarter Ash which is a little bit more muted.

September 2022

Q. For our new house build, I need some advice on which black to use for the accent walls.

For the lounge room, we have selected Resene Inside Back for the three walls and the TV wall is to be in black. Could you please advise from these three blacks – Resene Ironsand, Resene Baltic Sea and Resene Armadillo which one will suit better?

I am intending to use the same black on the barn door to this lounge. And the same black as an accent wall in the master bedroom where the other three walls I am keen on Resene Yucca. The rest of the house base colour will be either Resene Surrender or Resene Rakaia.

A. Because of the blue/green undertones you have throughout the house, I would recommend Resene Armadillo.

Resene ColorShop have a colour library of A4 paint swatches – staff will assist you in finding the colours you have for your new build and you can compare them with a swatch of Resene Armadillo.

September 2022

Q. We are in the process of building an office/teen rumpus room in our basement. It has little natural light and a really low ceiling. The walls will be plasterboard and the ceiling will be lined/grooved ply in between the joists which will be visible to add to the sense of height, these will need to be painted. The flooring will be a vinyl and I'm steering towards a timber lookalike. If you can recommend a colour to look for in this regard I'd be grateful. I am wanting to give a sense of height, warmth and space but also wanting to be a bit braver in my use of colour. For reference the exterior of the house is Resene Tino Pai on the bottom and the top is Resene Eighth Lemon Grass. The joinery is Silver Pearl.

The interior upstairs is Resene Half Sea Fog in the living areas with various shades of blue as accents in artwork, furniture and decor. The kitchen cabinetry is Resene Emerge. I went for a coastal feel which I'd like to continue.

A. Your colours are lovely and they are slightly muted so I recommend staying on this palette, while incorporating a different coastal tone downstairs. Muted blues and greens are warmer than clear bright colours and they can be accented with rich deeper tones for accessories and soft furnishings or a feature wall.

A pale coloured timber vinyl plank is going to work best downstairs – visit flooring shops with A2 card painted with the paint colour recommendations that appeal to you – you can then look at the suggestions in the space.

Colours on the walls might appear darker in this space.

I recommend you try these colours: Resene Eau De Nil – a watery green with a warm sage undertone – use it with Resene Half Black White on the ceiling – and accents similar to Resene Baring Head and Resene Infused.

Or Resene Breeze – a popular muted aqua – with Resene Timeless or Resene Half Sea Fog on the ceiling and accents of Resene Upside and Resene Unite.

Or Resene Quarter Powder Blue with Resene Quarter Emerge on the ceiling and accents of Resene Foundation and Resene Ocean Waves.

Q. We are wanting to stain our deck. The house colour is Resene Triple Pravda. The deck is very sunny. What stain colour would complement the house colour?

A. If the deck attracts a lot of heat I don’t recommend going to dark – a lighter to mid shade will pair well with the joinery and walls. Resene have ‘CoolColour’ stains. The pigment in cool colours helps to defer the harmful rays away from the timber – keeping it cooler underfoot – talk to the staff at Resene to see if a CoolColour is appropriate for your project.

Investigate Resene Iroko or Resene Tiri.

September 2022

Q. I am looking to paint the interior of my house in a grey palette, with the exception being the hallway in Resene Azure. I have been trying sample patches of Resene Quarter Surrender, Resene Half Surrender and Resene Surrender on the walls throughout the rooms. In the north and west facing rooms, the sample patches are looking to have strong violet undertones. I don't think that this will work with my forest green sofa and other furniture. I am looking for a crisp grey that goes with brightly coloured accessories.

Would you please be able to suggest a different grey that would be more of a true grey or maybe have blue or green undertones to complement the Resene Azure in the hallway? I know that greys can be quite tricky!

A. Try these greys – Resene Athens Grey, Resene Quarter Silver Chalice, Resene Concrete, Resene Quarter Iron or Resene Half Iron.

There are deeper and lighter strengths of these greys.

• Resene Athens Grey is a popular soft pearl grey which in some aspects can have a hint of blue/violet but less than Resene Surrender.

Resene Silver Chalice is neutral and pairs with a lot of colourways.

• Resene Concrete is a silvery grey which pairs well with cooler accents such as blue.

• Resene Quarter Iron or Resene Half Iron is a clean blue/grey.

When testing the colours please do not paint straight over existing colours as they can affect the way the true colour appears. Paint two coats on to A2 card (available from Resene ColorShops) leaving a white border around all edges to counteract any adjacent colour.

September 2022

Q. We are getting our house replastered as part of EQC works and are looking to replace the windows with PVC joinery at the same time (probably white). We are wanting to modernise the colour scheme but our brown roof is causing some headaches. Is there any way to modernise a brown roof? What exterior wall colours will go nicely with it? We will likely go for a flat plaster texture for a modern look.

A. The only way to modernise the overall appearance and to make the roof less of an emphasis is to use a colour that is current and muted, so there is less contrast between roof and walls.

Brown roofs with white joinery work well with warm stone colours, tans and beige.

I suggest if you are choosing new white joinery to stay away from cold blue whites – such as Arctic White.

Texture can make colours appear a little darker in some aspects – something to be aware of when looking at the colours which should be viewed outside.

See if any of these appeal and test two or three to compare the tones with your roof – Resene Half Cougar, Resene Double Tea, Resene Half Perfect Taupe or Resene Quarter Pravda.

September 2022

Q. I am looking for help choosing a front door colour. We are renovating our house and are currently putting in a new/old front door. The house is white 1930s render with grey trim. The fascia boards are in Resene Nocturnal to match the roof which is in Grey Friars COLORSTEEL®. The house is on a lifestyle block so cottage/native bush style. We like earthy colours and rustic country cottage style. The door will lead into a boot room with a varnished rime floor and wooden bench seat. We are currently thinking either green or dusky blue?

A. To pair with the existing colours you have – dusky blues and the right shade of greens will work – nothing too dark or bright – this will ensure you stay with a cottage feel and balance the rest of the scheme.

I recommend you test at least three colours using Resene testpots so that you can compare tones with the rest of the house – plus colours can change in natural bright light.

Try Resene Half Dusted Blue, Resene Green Days, Resene Eau De Nil, Resene Nepal, Resene Field Day, Resene Breeze or Resene Contour.

Q. I am building a house which has a FlaxPod roof and joinery. I want to look at a pale whitish shade for the Rockcote and a darker stain for the cedar.

A. Whites do tend to get washed out in the bright sun so I recommend investigating the deeper variants of whites – also having dark joinery means there is less contrast between roof, wall and joinery if you go a little deeper.

Resene Merino, Resene Sea Fog or Resene White Pointer will have enough colour to not create too much glare or you might like these deeper variants – Resene Double Merino or Resene Triple Sea Fog.

For the cedar I recommend – Resene Crowshead, Resene Shadow Match, Resene Charred Black or Resene Pitch Black – these are different strengths of colour so I recommend visiting a Resene ColorShop who have a stock A4 library of stain and paint swatches – you can take them outside and compare tones and see which stains pair best with which whites.

Consider using a Resene CoolColour for the stain – this is where clever pigment technology allows the heat to be deflected from the substrate – lessening the effect of heat damage to the timber, while the colour still looks ‘normal’. Check with your local Resene ColorShop staff if a CoolColour is right for your project.

September 2022

Q. I would like to use a Resene Black White colour palette in a room. What strengths do you recommend?

A. For open plan areas or rooms with lots of natural light – Resene Black White – absorbs bright light, for hallways and bedroom walls try Resene Triple Black White (warmer). For wet areas, try Resene Double Black White. For ceilings and trims, try Resene Half Black White.

September 2022

Q. We are looking at Resene Concrete for interior walls. What would work best for trims and doors with it? Resene Black White?

For exterior we are wanting to go with the darker modern look – but are afraid to go full charcoal/black. We were thinking Resene Half Grey Friars. Our windows/garage are Grey Friars. Will Resene Half Grey Friars be too light for the look we are after?

A. Resene Sea Fog looks nice with Resene Concrete and isn’t too white.

Resene Half Grey Friars is a mid grey – and it works well with Grey Friars on windows etc as they blend in rather than accenting with a different tone of grey. Resene Half Grey Friars although not black or charcoal is still going to create a modern appearance.

Is there a reason why you are worried about using a darker colour? It does depend on the overall look of your house to what will work.

September 2022

Q. I'm painting a building and I'm wondering what pinks hues and violets are trending.

A. The right hue depends on whether you are doing interior or exterior and what is the purpose of the spaces being painted.

Generally speaking – pale terracotta – so pinks with apricot tones, or dusky pinks almost beige in some lights – through to bold hot pinks are currently trending – try colours like Resene Contented, Resene Awaken, Resene Dawn Glow or Resene Coconut Ice.

Violet hues range from pale mauve through to mid toned pink based lilacs and saturated red violets – try Resene Petal, Resene Sugar Plum Fairy, Resene Tenor or Resene Staccato.

Q. We have a beautiful old villa built approx 1882 here in Dunedin. The wooden exterior walls are painted Resene Drought and all windows frames etc are all Resene Pearl Lusta with the windowsills in Resene Nero. The roof is a very dark grey long run COLORSTEEL®. The house is being repainted with the same colours but I was wondering what colour you would recommend for the veranda floor to complement the Resene Drought walls etc. At present the veranda floor is painted in Resene Wireless. Sitting on the veranda there is a black wrought iron table and chairs along with two large black urns (containing standard bay trees and bedding plants) either side of the front door. The front door is painted black with brass fittings. The veranda floor is wooden (tongue-and-groove), it is the original flooring with some recent repairs.

A. The tones you have all work lovely together for this era of villa. For an updated version of Resene Wireless – investigate Resene Half Baltic Sea or you might like to look at these tones – Resene Quarter Fuscous Grey, Resene Ironside Grey or Resene Dune.

September 2022

Q. I have a 18 year old house which has an Ironsand roof and windows. I want to paint the exterior. What colour should I use for the walls, garage door and front door?

A. Ironsand goes well with natural earthy colours when used for roof and joinery – the colours recommended will look different depending on substrates – I suggest you test a few to determine which tone you like – undercoat an area with a water based product such as Resene Quick Dry – so the existing colour doesn’t influence the appearance of the new colours.

For walls try Resene Truffle, Resene Double Truffle, Resene Stonehenge, Resene Eighth Masala, Resene Half Friar Greystone.

For the garage door, try Resene Ironsand (this generally is matched to the roof and doesn’t lend itself to being a feature).

For the front door, try Resene Dark Web (which is the same as Resene Triple Ironsand) or you might like to choose an accent colour such as Resene Tarzan, Resene Time Traveller or Resene Aroha.

I recommend a semi-gloss or gloss to highlight the colour for the front door.

Q. We're doing a new build. I’m painting the front door Resene Sebedee. And I may do a feature kitchen wall in Resene Allports. The house gets a lot of light in the living areas. I’m looking for a good colour for the walls and ceilings. Something that won't be too glary.

A. Investigate Resene Sea Fog – a versatile cool toned white that can be warmed up with accessories and soft furnishings; Resene Merino – slightly warmer with a slight green oxide base, or Resene Rice Cake – warmer but has a slight green/grey undertone which helps to counteract bright light.

There are lighter versions of these three whites if you want to paint the ceiling as colours on ceilings shadow, so they appear darker – however it is possible for the living area to paint the walls and ceilings the same.

September 2022

Q. What colour stain do you recommend would be suited to pair with a Sandstone roof and dark joinery?

A. I recommend staining with a darker shade so your joinery isn’t the feature (but not an urban black). Stains do not give a solid appearance like paint, so you will still achieve a natural look with a darker stain. I recommend using Resene Shadow Match or Resene Charred Black. I recommend you consider using a Resene CoolColour version of your colour – this helps to reflect more heat away from the surface. Check with your Resene ColorShop team whether a CoolColour is right for your project.

Q. Currently we have Manorstone brick with Grey Friars windows and roof. The extension is Axon cladding and we are wondering what colour paint will work with the Grey Friars and cream Manorstone brick.

A. Being Axon panels you have the advantage of painting them a dark colour – as an option – with having different materials – you might like to match in with the Grey Friars. I recommend testing Resene Quarter Grey Friars, Resene Half Grey Friars, Resene Foggy Grey or Resene Silver Chalice.

September 2022

Q. I'm having a lot of trouble finding the right white for a dining room. I want a warm cream, not too white and not too yellowy. I'm thinking either Resene Quarter Spanish White or Resene Eighth Spanish White (though if I go with eighth for the walls I'm not sure what colour I should use for the skirting boards and ceilings). I have also tried Resene Quarter Dutch White and Resene Rice Cake (both too yellow) and Resene Quarter Rice Cake (too pale). I'd like the colour to work well with Resene Ship Cove as that is what I'd like to paint the lounge. What white would you suggest?

A. The Spanish White family may be too yellow for you. Have you tried Resene Half Rice Cake – this will pair with Resene Eighth Rice Cake for the skirtings and ceilings. Or Resene Quarter Thorndon Cream is a warm white and you could mix it up a bit and have white ceilings with Resene Quarter Rice Cake on the trims.

Or try Resene Half Bianca, a light cream – I recommend pairing this with Resene White to bring out the warmth.

Paint A2 card, two coats with Resene testpots (available at Resene ColorShops) leaving a white border on all edges of the card, so no other colours influence the eye and attach to the walls in the dining room. All of these neutrals will pair with Resene Ship Cove – a fabulous blue!

Q. We’re getting an extension built above our garage, and looking to paint the entire house externally. At the moment it is the colour Resene Rockbottom, but we want a change. Our roof and garage door colour is Ironsand and will stay that colour. So we would like to know what colour goes with Ironsand? We’re thinking more in the grey tones but not too dark.

A. You might like to investigate these greys – they will all work with Ironsand – make sure you test and view the colours outside before making your final choice.

Try Resene Tino Pai, Resene Four Winds, Resene Solstice, Resene Grey Area, Resene Grey Seal or Resene Quarter Baltic Sea.

Q. Our house was built with Rockcote cladding and Resene Witch Haze about 7-8 years ago. When it comes to repainting the exterior, apart from repeating the same colour, what options do we have if we want to try something different? I'm guessing you would not recommend a lighter colour such as light blue.

A. Colours do brighten outside and undertones are emphasised, they also lighten by at least 30%.

A grey blue is where I recommend heading with the roof and joinery.

See if any of these colours appeal – Resene Shuttle Grey, Resene Bluff, Resene Bounty, Resene Half Dusted Blue or Resene Clouded Blue.

September 2022

Q. I have reached out before and am about to order some Resene Bokara Grey for my house. I am interested to know though, what colour you think would look good for our door.

A. Resene Bokara Grey will look fabulous! It pairs well with colourful saturated accents – your door will suit a rich contrast – perhaps you might like to investigate a few of these colours to get you started – Resene Sunbaked, Resene Kombucha, Resene Arriba, Resene Time Traveller or Resene Pandemonium.

Q. I live on Waiheke Island and it’s a north-facing property with lots of sun. I am painting the exterior in Resene Hermitage with white trim. What colour do I paint my tin roof?

A. Resene Hermitage is a great colour – I recommend Resene Mid Grey for the roof. It sits well with Resene Hermitage and white, plus with the north facing aspect and the environment your house sits in – it is not too dark or glaringly bright.

September 2022

Q. My walls are painted in a warm white colour. I am putting in a new kitchen – can you recommend a nice soft colour that would complement a stone bench with speckles of grey and beige (very subtle). I have been considering making the cupboards warm white or possibly a soft version of Truffle – would this go with warm white or have you a better suggestion? There are cathedral ceilings of macrocarpa in the open kitchen dining lounge area so this is the main feature.

A. Resene Half Truffle or Resene Truffle will pair well with a warm white. These are both soft colours – you will need to test them in the actual space to see how lighting affects the colour and to see whether you need to go lighter or deeper. Paint two coats onto A2 card (available at Resene ColorShops) and attach to cabinetry to see which you like.

September 2022

Q. What white can I use that will go with Resene Eighth Tea?

A. Resene Quarter Black White looks lovely with Resene Eighth Tea.

September 2022

Q. We are painting the exterior of our home, and installing new joinery. The home currently is bright white plaster and limestone brick, with green joinery. We are considering Matt FlaxPod for the new joinery, garage and front door, but we are unsure about the exterior wall colour and brick.

Would Resene Triple Sea Fog be an option for the exterior wall colour and bricks, alongside matt FlaxPod joinery?

Our interior is Resene Half White Pointer with Resene Alabaster trim and ceilings.

A. Matt FlaxPod is going to make a huge improvement to the overall appearance of your house, and the starkness of the white plaster definitely need to be softened.

Resene Triple Sea Fog is worth testing – I recommend testing these neutrals too, just to compare tones to see which actually sits better with the brick – they will all pair with FlaxPod – try Resene Triple Black White, Resene Double White Pointer, Resene Double Merino or Resene Quill Grey.

Please test outside as colours do appear lighter and brighter in natural bright light.

September 2022

Q. Can you suggest a complementary colour for an adjoining lounge. We have Resene Thorndon Cream in the kitchen/dining area. I would like a colour with some depth. It’s a sunny room, not that big – 5.2 x 5 metres.

A. See if any of these colours appeal and work well with any other existing elements in your room – they have a grey/green undertone so complement the Resene Thorndon Cream family, and are great tones for sunny rooms – Resene Ash, Resene Linen, Resene Triple Thorndon Cream, Resene Quarter Delta or Resene Half Delta.

September 2022

Q. We are looking at using Resene Seachange for the exterior of our stucco Art Deco house, with Resene Half Tea for the trim. Do you think the colour would be too much for large facades?

A. The colour isn’t too much, but the tone may not be quite right. In different aspects and times of the day the blue will be brighter and enhanced, therefore sometimes it is worth going a little more muted on an exterior.

I suggest trying similar colours such as Resene Watermark – which has more warmth than Resene Seachange, Resene Wayfarer – a little bit more subdued, or Resene Baring Head – much more grey, with a hint of blue green. You might also like to investigate these two steely grey blues – Resene Rhino or Resene Excalibur – a lighter variant.

Q. I want to paint the trellis/fence around my house in a charcoal dark grey. I don’t want black. So somewhere in between. The original is a blue grey, I don’t want hints of blue.

A. You might like to test these charcoals – try Resene Porter, Resene Bokara Grey, Resene Night Magic or Resene Times Square.

Q. Our kitchen cupboards are painted Resene Black White. I was going to paint all the walls Resene Black White too but am now worried it will be too stark. A friend recommended Resene Quarter Thorndon Cream for the walls. The problem is I don't want the kitchen cupboards to look grey next to the wall colour – the idea is for fresh white and wood for the kitchen. Is Resene Quarter Thorndon Cream a good co-ordinating colour for Resene Black White?

A. The thing is – unless your kitchen design, aspect and lighting is exactly the same as your friends – then colours including whites and neutrals will not necessarily look the same.

Yes Resene Black White may tend to look grey next to a warm white like Resene Quarter Thorndon Cream.

If you want a fresh kitchen and you are teaming with wood, and your kitchen is fairly warm then then you might like to keep the walls light and bright with Resene Alabaster – this pairs well with Resene Black White – the wood should keep everything from looking too stark.

Alternately you could look at deeper walls, toning with the Resene Black White such as Resene Double Black White or Resene Triple Black White – which is surprisingly, slightly warm – but will give a hint of grey on the walls – making the cabinetry appear white. Resene White Pointer is also an option to try for the walls.

Paint A2 card (available at Resene ColorShops) with Resene testpots and see how these neutrals look in your kitchen.

Q. I would love some advice on exterior colours for our house. We quite like the soft yellowy tones it is currently but are not sure of highlights. We like the idea of an orange door but are not sure if it would work. The roof is Grey Friars. We are also keen for advice on what colour to paint the planter boxes by the door. They are concrete.

A. Trendy sunbaked terracotta and bolder oranges will work for the front door – you might like to repeat this colour on to the planter boxes or use another blue which complements the roof, for the planters. Try Resene Sunbaked, Resene Clementine Orange, Resene Weathered Orange, Resene Jailbreak, Resene Undercurrent, Resene Shadowy Blue or a charcoal like Resene Foundry.

September 2022

Q. We are about to paint the exterior of our house – a mix of plastered cladding and cedar weatherboard. We would like to move away from the yellow/brown it is currently to something more crisp. Currently we are thinking that the weatherboards will be painted Resene Element, and the roof and garage doors Resene Grey Friars. We are looking for two colours to break up the rather monolithic front of the house – at the moment the garage level is a darker tone than the top two stories, and this would also be the bargeboard colour.

A colour consultant suggested either Resene Quarter Delta and Resene Double Sea Fog, or Resene Triple White Pointer and Resene White Pointer. After trialling them on the front of the house I think the Resene Delta/ Resene Sea Fog is too cold and stark, and I'm not sure there is enough contrast between the Resene White Pointer options.

I like the warmth of the Resene Triple White Pointer so I was wondering if you could recommend a darker tone that would go with this for the garage level, with Resene Triple White Pointer on the upper storeys.

A. You might like to try with Resene Triple White PointerResene Triple Truffle, Resene Quarter Fuscous Grey, Resene Gauntlet, Resene Gunsmoke or Resene Friar Greystone.

Q. I am painting a bedroom it doesn’t get much sunlight and is not a very big bedroom. The windowsills and skirting board are Resene Quarter Pavlova. The room was originally Resene Pavlova but I want a change. I want a neutral colour like Resene Quarter Pearl Lusta but am not sure if that would work.

A. I recommend Resene Half Pearl Lusta – it pairs well with Resene Quarter Pavlova.

Try a testpot and paint two coats on to A2 card – available at Resene ColorShops, leaving a white border on all edges of the card, so the existing yellow undertone of the Resene Pavlova on the walls doesn’t alter your perception of the colour you are trying.

September 2022

Q. I am gradually painting Resene Rice Cake to all interior walls in my house. What would be the recommended colour for ceilings and trims please? Note; the floors are polished rimu.

A. Resene Rice Cake looks great with polished rimu. I’m picking that your trims will be significant if you have rimu floors – therefore going lighter will give you the best effect.

Resene Eighth Rice Cake is in the same family, but the whitest variant – I recommend this for the ceilings and trims – with the trims being closest to the timber floors – going with the lightest variant will also tone down the warmth of the wood. Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss is generally best for trims.

September 2022

Q. We are looking at Resene Half Silver Chalice as the colour to paint the weatherboard exterior of our house. Can you recommend a complementary colour for painting the concrete/block base of the house and the front door (primarily glass)?

A. Resene Stack is complementary to Resene Half Silver Chalice – it is basically Resene Triple Silver Chalice – but will create a nice contrast outside – as colours do lighten in natural bright light.

For the glass front door – see if any of these appeal – Resene Dark Slate, Resene Freelance, Resene Armadillo, Resene Holly, Resene Time Traveller or Resene Elephant.

Q. What Resene white would pair well as an exterior paint with a COLORSTEEL® roof in Cloud? I have painted an A2 sheet in Resene Helium but feel this is throwing too much green for my liking. The exterior colour scheme is intended to be monochromatic, with Appliance White or Pure White window joinery to be decided. Ideally the exterior paint colour will be a smooth 'transition' between the roof and window colour. The cladding used is bagged brick and James Hardie Linea Oblique.

A. Cloud/Resene Helium does have a slight hint of green, and appliance white is a cool toned, slightly grey white.

To create a smooth ‘transition’ from roof to joinery – have a look at Resene Half Sea Fog – it is quite close in tone to Appliance White or it will pair with white and also works well with Cloud. Resene Sea Fog (slightly deeper) is another option – colours do lighten and brighten outside in natural light, so you may want to go with the deeper option.

September 2022

Q. I am looking for suggestions for a yellow for a hallway adjacent to the living area that is painted in Resene Ashanti.

A. Resene Ashanti is a lovely muted aqua – see if any of these yellows appeal: Resene Sunbeam – a golden glow of yellow; Resene Golden Sand – a buttery yellow, or Resene Illuminate – a yellow with a hint of green.

Yellows are great for hallways as they can intensify when on four walls – hallways are transitional, the colour is happy and inviting. The tone will change depending on the time of day – what starts off as a buttery yellow at the entrance can then turn mustard as you move in to the hallway. Paint A2 card – available at Resene ColorShops – with Resene testpots, two coats, leave a white edge all the way around the A2 card, so no existing colour influences how you perceive the yellows you are testing. Move around the hallway day and night – I suggest you try at least two yellows, so you can compare undertones.

Q. We have a board and batten house which is currently stained a dark black/brown/reddish colour. We are looking to paint it to protect it. We like dark colours but black seems too dark/harsh as it is a very tall and long building, but love the earthy, modern, dark colours.

A. I do recommend darker colours for the cladding – it will suit the style, address the length and complement the joinery. Resene ColorShops have a stock library of A4 swatches – so you can look at the recommendations before purchasing test pots. View the swatches outside as colours lighten by 30%, and undertones are heightened in natural bright light.

Also speak to Resene ColorShop staff about using a CoolColour paint, which will help reflect more heat away from the substrate, prolonging the life of the timber and colour.

Try Resene Kia Kaha, Resene Triple Dune, Resene Armadillo, Resene Bokara Grey or Resene Half Bokara Grey.

Q. We have painted our lounge in Resene Quarter Thorndon Cream with ceiling and trims in Resene Alabaster. Our hallway is Resene Half Rice Cake. Our main bedroom is Resene Half Periglacial Blue. We now have the laundry toilet and main bathroom to paint. These rooms come off the hallway. I also want to paint the ensuite and walk in wardrobe along with the wooden closet system which is varnished light cedar wood. I'm not sure whether to continue with Resene Eighth Thorndon Cream or go with Resene Rice Cake, again maybe in a different strength. Should I paint these smaller rooms with ceilings and trim all in the one colour or continue with Resene Alabaster? I would like it to achieve a good glow throughout.

A. The walk in wardrobe, ensuite and Wooden shelving system – I recommend Resene Eighth Rice Cake – keep it light so the clothing and accessories are highlighted. Drama can be added to these areas through fabrics, quirky objects, lighting and coloured jewellery etc. Paint the walls ceilings and trims Resene Eighth Rice Cake – there is no need to use Resene Alabaster for these areas.

For the laundry, main bathroom and toilet I recommend keeping with Resene Half Rice Cake – and use this on the ceilings and trims too, this will create the overall glow you are trying to achieve. The laundry is a room which can be treated differently – a bit of fun – so perhaps there is a wall you could hang Resene wallpaper on or bring in a new colour such as Resene Double Duck Egg Blue which will complement the Resene Half Periglacial Blue in the bedroom.

Q. We have painted our house Resene Friar Greystone with Resene Black White trim around windows. I was wondering what COLORSTEEL® roof colour would match this please? We painted it Grey Friars but it wasn't quite right. We now have to replace the roof so have a second chance to get it right.

A. Grey Friars is probably too cool toned with your colour scheme.

If your roof is going to be COLORSTEEL® then I recommend FlaxPod – it has a slight warmth to it and the height of your house can take the depth. It seems to be proving popular – FlaxPod has been developed to suit NZ landscapes – urban and rural. The equivalent of FlaxPod in Resene paint is Element.

Q. I am looking to use your paint to represent human blood drops in my art piece. Could you please recommend human blood red colours that I should consider using?

A. Here a few options – from dark blood to brighter – see if any of these Resene reds work for you: Resene Volcano, Resene Courage, Resene Lonestar, Resene Dynamite, Resene Hot Chile, Resene Salsa or Resene Shiraz.

August 2022

Q. I am looking for a light blue colour to go with the colour Resene Licorice. It is for an outdoor patio ceiling. The posts and trim will be Resene Licorice. I was thinking maybe quarter strength Resene Chi or Resene Solitude (may be too light)?

A. I quite like Resene Zircon with these type of elegant grey blues like Resene Licorice.

Otherwise you could also try Resene Remember Me or Resene Half Breathless.

August 2022

Q. We have a Titania COLORSTEEL® roof and Titania aluminium joinery. We are after a colour for the exterior which is Linea fibre cement weatherboard. We live in a semi-rural coastal area looking for a colour that will blend into the environment which is leafy with extensive gardens. We like both light and dark colours.

A. If you want a colour which will blend into the environment and complement your roof and joinery then I recommend a recessive colour – dark tone. This also takes advantage of the fact that you have Linea, which is one of the few substrates that can be painted dark, without issues. I have included some lighter colours as well – it is best to test them outside as colour lightens by at least 20% in natural bright light.

Try these colour options: Resene Bokara Grey, Resene Quarter Bokara Grey, Resene Dark Web, Resene Half Delta, Resene Double Mondo, Resene Triple Ash or Resene Eighth Stonewall.

August 2022

Q. We have a 1980s house with a tin tile roof, bronze/brown anodised joinery and cream brick with grey mortar. We just recently painted the walls/barge board in Resene Half Surrender. However we need to know what colour to paint the roof.

A. Since the bargeboards (in Resene Half Surrender) are closer to the roof – then I recommend a roof colour which works with this colour, as the bronze aluminium joinery doesn’t really relate to the new scheme.

Try Resene Tuna or Resene Half Tuna. These colours will appear quite a bit lighter outside and with the pitch of the roof – but a mid-toned grey is in keeping with the fairly soft colours of the exterior.

August 2022

Q. I am looking for a coastal theme grey. Resene Bermuda Grey and Resene Escapade are a little too blue for me.

A. You might like to try these grey blues: Resene Powder Blue, Resene Half Dusted Blue, Resene Triple Duck Egg Blue, Resene Casper or Resene Longitude.

These recommendations are more grey than blue – it does depend on how you are using the colour to what tone it will reflect – for example, in low light rooms or the south side of the house it may reflect more grey than blue – so it may pay to test a couple of different tones, in the environment you are applying the colour to.

If you want to opt for greyer, you might like these options which are the same intensity as Bermuda Grey and Escapade: Resene Bluff or Resene Excalibur or lighter – Resene Lynchpin or Resene Bounty.

August 2022

Q. I am painting my weatherboard exterior Resene Half Smalt Blue and am looking for a white for the eaves and joinery?

A. Have a look at Resene Half Milk White for a softer appearance or for a crisper feel – Resene Wan White, both from the Karen Walker Paints collection.

August 2022

Q. I really like the Resene Palm Green colour but worried it may be too dark for the whole bedroom I am planning on painting it in (which only has one window). Is there a slightly lighter dark green that is the same green tone (like a classic, collegiate Palm Beach style dark green)?

A. Try Resene Everglade (slightly lighter) or Resene Mother Nature – similar tone but lighter again.

Resene Mother Nature

August 2022

Q. What nearly black or dark charcoal works well with Resene Rice Cake?

A. Warm charcoals, deep greys or near blacks all go with Resene Rice Cake – some popular colours to try are: Resene Bokara Grey, Resene Nocturnal, Resene Blackjack, Resene Fuscous Grey or Resene Jaguar.

August 2022

Q. We have painted our ceilings and skirtings Resene Half Bianca and quite like this colour. We then painted our walls Resene Villa White and there is quite a contrast. We are wondering If there is a better white to use with the Resene Half Bianca? We are after something with a little bit of colour to it.

A. If you are after less contrast then I recommend staying within the Resene Bianca family – try full strength Resene Bianca, a warm off white, or Resene Double Bianca, or a slightly brighter cream, such as Resene Orchid White.

August 2022

Q. I have purchased a house and it's just been painted Resene Ash on the concrete panels and Resene Half Ash on the weatherboards. The colour isn't as contrasted as I would like. In fact I think I'd prefer a white house but I was wondering if I'd get more contrast with Resene Eighth Ash and if that would go with the Resene Ash.

A. Outside colours lighten by at least 20% in bright daylight, so yes, you do need more contrast and Resene Eighth Ash will provide this. Resene Eighth Ash will look brighter (but not stark) outside and will work.
