Modern master

The proud homeowner of a 1940s two bedroom stucco house in Gisborne, Janine's renovation started with the master bedroom. The tiny built-in wardrobe was redesigned into two wardrobes extending along the entire length of the room.

Rusty light fittings were taken down, faded wallpaper ripped off, tattered old carpet pulled up and threadbare curtains taken down. With putty, sandpaper and laborious hours of elbow grease, the bare room was ready for a new colour scheme.

Living in Gisborne, famous for being the first to see the sun, the town has more sunshine hours than any other NZ town. The house faces west and with many large windows it has an earthy, warm essence. To reflect this a neutral Resene Rice Cake was chosen for main walls with Resene Saddle for feature walls.

A weekend job of sanding floors was the most demanding task of the renovation for a woman doing it solo. After sanding, Janine created a darker effect by staining the floorboards in Resene Colorwood tinted to Resene Dark Rimu before applying coats of Resene Polythane clear polyurethane.

Next, new art deco lamps and timber Venetians were mounted. Accessories of cushions and a rug keeping to a green, brown and white flavour were added. The transformation completed, the master bedroom is now crisp, bright and modern. Time now for the next room...
